Sorry Guys, But Apple did wait too long. Had they sed microsoft earlier, there might have won. However, MS had grown by leaps and bounds by the time Apple went after them. Many people argue that the judge involved in the case did not think he had the right to be the end of a company based on what really was simply a contract/licencing dispute. Had he known what MS would become furtherdown the line (b/c after all no one knew what MS would become) he might have ruled in favor of Apple because it was Apple's work that gave them a jump start. People don't forget that the court system puts into account much more than what is presented in courts. each decision they make sets a president. at the time they didn't want to make the world feel that a company could be partailly ruined (as MS may have been had the case gone the other way) over a dispute.

  4. I don't understand on Gaming Companies Being Sued Over Columbine · · Score: 1

I am in highschool and after all of these things have happened our school has become extreamly precarious about any sort of voilence. They get very upset over us having Q3 on the PC's in the labs around the school. I don't understand how adults attribute student's actions to violence in the media. For a junior it is very easy for me to see how and why things like Columbine happen. At my highschool of 1200 students I can easily see those students that have been marginalized by the system. The ones that have always had a tough time, and these tough times have been compounded by a community that only further suppresses them. The sad thing is that this community is not just the students, it is the adults in the school too. Adults are human and they show, if not as openly as students, their dislike for certain students. Imagine four years of highschool in an envirnment like that. So anyway, to blame all things like that on the gaming industry is foolish at best.

  5. Honestly Folks on IBM Won't Support FreeBSD On ThinkPads · · Score: 2

I am going to put this plain and simply. What percent of the market if the buyers of think pads are really going to get their paniteis in a knot because thier laptop will not support Linux or FreeBSD? Chances are the majority are just everyday windows users. So lets say that, if it was a support problem would it really be in their financial interest to spend the money to support it? Chances are no, but I could be wrong. If I am let me know (no sarcasm intended). We often forget that somputer industry is out there to make money, not to advocate open source even if they are a company that generally "understands" the open source movement.

Think about this, if it is ilegal to copy music, that is copy-written, then transfering that infromation via Napster is just another medium for copying that information. To, argue that whatever company uses this tracking service will eventually have laibilty problems is absurd. There is a trend within US courts, they have become very strict in regulatiing on-line distribution, meaning they don't give a damn about some person's ip address, being tracked to prevent copy-write infringement.

The G3 is actaully a "tweaked" and shrunk 604e, not 603e. The G4's speed is in the fabrication procees, copper not aluminum, and the chip is much smaller. Not to mention all of the AltiVec stuff. Also, the G4 can be set up to parralell process, but inlike most chips, it does not need one particular chip to distribute the work load. The AltiVec allows for this in some way that I don't understand.

  13. Some Things to Consider on David Brin Responds to Star Wars Issues · · Score: 1

    Dear Slashdot,

First off, these are just movies, meant to make money and entertain. Secondly, when Lucas first began working on Star Wars I am sure that he knew that the idea of a "fatherless hero" (as Luke is in episode 4 before the other movies were made) would identify with all people because it is a highly mythological and is an archetype. As the movies progressed he had to build on what he had, and with all due respect he did a fantastic job.

Another point to consider is that when you are dealing with Star Wars and arguing over them, you must dispense with reality and accept the reality of the movies. With this in mind we can see that perhaps many of David Brins arguments are false.

Most importantly, as much as we all love the movies, the only person with the answers is Lucas. It is his world that he conjured up and only he has the right to say what has actually happened. Take for example Tolkien, his world of Middle Earth was completely conjured in his mind. Today readers have questions about the books, that were not answered in Tolkien's novels. In an attempt to solve this problem one of Tolkiens sons tours, having meetings to discuss the books and answer questions as best to is knowledge. Perhaps the people of Slashdot (whom we all are in ever obliged) should send a letter to Lucas (if this is possible) asking him about many of the inferences that have been made about the movies, ie: David Brins theory that Vader was trying to bring balance all along ( see point #5).
