Ok... I *JUST* got out my ammeter, and my computer takes in.5A. At least in America, we have 120 Volts, so thats 60 watts (if i am thinking correctly here, P=VI, right?) Now, in most parts of the country, energy is about 8-10 cents a kilowatt hour. According to my calculuations (correct me if im wrong here), but thats like 6 cents a night? I'd also like to point out that if a computer puts out any NOTICABLE heat of noise, you probably need a new computer, perferably not an intel *hint*
Hate to knitpick here, but I didn't remember Gimp being a part of Slackware 96.. Was it even out then? I dont recall GTK being around then either, but then again I wasn't a very attentive user:)
Well, if this is going to be a customized PPC chip, how hard is this really going to be to emulate, especially from a Mac. Processor speeds are getting up there, and I'm pretty sure by the time its out, it will be conceivable to run an emulator at full speed at this rate. Of couse you still have to look at the speed of the bus, but this would still be possible, right? All I'm saying is, remember when the N64 first came out? Everyone went on forever about how it would not possible to emulate it? Well, you never know with this:)

Its not a bug, more of a feature. it runs "esound" which i belive uses libaudiofile (written by the one and only mike pruett), it allows more than one sound to be played at one time, and a bunch of other features. the catch? the app needs to be compiled with support for it, but a lot of apps out there have been modified to use it (a lot of wav players and most popular mp3 players, etc etc).
First of all, Linux's user base is somewhere around 2 to 3 times the size of Macintosh's user base (it has around 28% of the market last i heard, but this is just servers i think), reguardless though, he wasnt talking about the fear the Apple was doing this. I'm quite sure he was afraid they werent releasing the source to the codecs.
As much as a good idea as this sounds, this throughly depresses me as a game programmer. I am a very old style one, I like everything to be done by hand, no high level libraries and such, just strait c and assembly. But high level libraries are begging to takeover the gaming world.. It has gotten to the point of point and click game programming, its just too easy. The problem with this? a LOT of shitty games with absolutley nothing revolutionary about them. I'll admit that I find Quake2 a lot more bland than Quake I when it first came out. The only decently revolutionary game I've seen of lately is Half Life, and it still doesnt seem like a jump. I guess I'm still just reminisant of the days of DOS VGA game programming, where effiency actually mattered.
Normally yes. But keep in mind, Redhat isnt dieing out like Netscape was/is, it is THRIVING... This isn't some attempt to save itself.. it is THE number one distro and has more outside support than anyone else.. it has to be going on fine with its financial problems.
Yeah, however BellSouth is just as bad as BellAtlantic... Hell, these are some of the problems I've run in with them: They wont install if: a) Running Linux OR FreeBSD (and other Unices) b) Computers are on a 3 box network for file sharing c) Ask about getting a static (I got accused of setting up a warez/mp3 site and then got hungup on)
There were various other problems I had with the many representatives I talked to... Bottom line, I'm going to wait for cable, as my cable company doesn't seem mind any of these.. My bottom rule about dealing with ADSL people, don't mention anything, just say you want to buy an Internet.
Although this will sound like Flame Bait, BeOS is just as bad if not worse than anything Microsoft could come up with. Ever tried it? I just got R4 in the mail a month ago, and was overly disappointed. It has many problems, more bugs than Windows (and a hell of a lot more unstable). Although it was an actually release for sale (99 dollars is its retail value), it acted like beta software. Yes, it is an alternative. Yes, it does do neat stuff. Yes, its multimedia abilities do smack the bejesus (no pun intended), but it has a lot of flaws. Want to develope for Be? 400 dollars is the going rate i belive. A friend of mine was coding a bunch of its sound system applications, guess what? All of a sudden he had to PAY to make applications being bundled with the OS, and he wouldn't get any support from the company either (ie: docs and info on the core). I don't really see the point in bundling at least BeOS, other than maybe proving a point for Microsoft, as 98/NT are more stable, reliable, and feature filled than Be. Maybe once Be stops with the insane developer fees and maybe gets a descent system out of it, sure, it'll be great to ship out... Until then its futile.
What you do: a) recompile the latest Window Maker with KDE support (in the "./Install" script) b) edit/opt/kde/bin/startkde (or where ever its located) and change the 'kwm' line to 'wmaker' c) if its not already there, put '/opt/kde/bin/startkde' in your ~/.xinitrc (or whatever your distro uses, i remember old slackware didnt like having ~/.xinitrc) d) startx and enjoy.
you MAY want to run WPref's and take out the redundant stuff that KDE and Window Maker will both have, and get each other visually out of each others hair (ie: where minimized icons are located)
yet another reason why I'm dieing to go to GDC... Unfortuanately you need to be 18+ to be admitted, which I'm missing by 2 weeks *pulls hair out* Shame, they have some real awesome tutorials this year. I still miss the good ole days of mode 13h though:)
Always expect stuff NOT to work when you use binaries.. especially if you are getting them from rawhide, they are linked with new and different libraries old redhat's dont have! what to do? compile it yourself. its not hard! say it with me!./configure ; make ; make install phew. that was hard.
I'm not sure, but don't most people learn around when they are nine its impolite and not to mention totally immature to discredit and mock other people's ideas and work? Yes, KDE is nice. Yes, GNOME is nice. I personally don't see why anyone needs *either* of them right now, because honestly, if you are in need of desktop environments (outside of a nice standard window manager, write your own, its not hard..) Linux probably isn't the operating system for you! I personally see it as helpful incase someone comes over and needs to use your computer, and would get freaked out by you using a console... But if you are dependant on it enough to troll for flames, consider switching to a more "complete", "real", and "best desktop" operating system like MacOS or Windows.

Heres how things work in the console industry (from someone that actually writes games): Sony doesn't make money off of the console, it makes it off of the games. The profit off of a game console to sony isn't that much if you actually think of it, hardware costs a lot, and lets not forget the middle man. There is a large profit margin on games however, media doesnt cost much. Whats the point? To put out a game for the Playstation, you need to PAY Sony. This is where the ultimate revenue for the Playstation comes from. Whats the point? Sony isn't screwed by the Emulator, and I doubt Piracy will raise from this that much, as the Modchip+CDR Piracy method is already dominant. Oh yeah, and on a side note, Microsoft is NOTHING compared to Sony's evil empire.
