I've had the same unplayable disc shipped back to me 3 times despite me returning it as unplayable everytime. The scratches looked familiar, so I took a sharpie to the sleeve, and sure enough it came right back. I even had some cracked discs. All this in an under a year service.
I guess it all depends on your regional warehouse, the number of subscribers in your area, and your mailman.
I personally still love good ol' QuakeWorld (QWCTF was the absolute best multiplayer experience ever). The community is still thriving on irc.enterthegame.net #qwctf. Games can still be found (although more DM than CTF now).
They're not comparing the volumes (or number of sales or whatever it's called) of the industry; however, they're instead comparing the revenues of the industries. Would you rather sell 50 billion x $.05 widgets or 10k x $10e6 widgets?
I wonder what the cost to produce a movie versus the the cost to produce a video game is.
Revenues - cost of goods = gross margin.
Comparing the industries on average gross margin (or better yet, net profits) would indicate which industry is better.
How does this affect zombies? Will little ol' grandmothers and 6-year old boys have an e-bounty on their head because they didn't properly patch their systems?
In the article, Gilmore's quotations lead me to believe that the government is concealing the actual text of the law/regulations. However, the poster leads us to believe that it is only the government's reasonings behind the law and their case for it in court that is being requested to remain secret. Which is the case? Is the text of the airline regulations for identification/documentation before boarding a flight publicly available?
I wonder if the government wants its reasonings to remain secret for a reason -- the 9/11 Commission Report mentions a computer system called CAPPS (Computer Assisted Prescreening Passenger System) whose sole purpose is to identify passengers who should be subject to special security measures. I'm not sure how this system works, but I wouldn't be surprised if ethnicity and country of flight source/destination plays into the algorithm's decision making. Maybe a similar vague/biased approach is used in determining the required identification papers necessary to board a plane.
In court, it could be argued that this is unconstitutional and could be a big media mess for the government and the FAA. Crummy situation -- only another tossup of decreased privacy vs. increased sense of security. Not sure if I really care anymore on any of these types of situations.
Agreed. I have a 384MB Outlook PST file that I want to move into GMail, but the current loading utilities and methods don't do it for me. Do the current crop of tools even support folders/subfolders or does all the mail come into the Inbox in one large batch?
I put in a suggestion (as I'm sure hundreds already have) to have an importing tool for common mailbox formats.
I've been a slave to POP for 5-6 years...just waiting on Google to break the last shackle.
So here's my promise to you...I graduate in December. If I end up working for Google, I'll push for it and write it if it isn't already done.
"This port need not be open -- since knockd listens at the link-layer level, it sees all traffic even if it's destined for a closed port." This is from the page of the implementation this article is about.
Also, the first sentence from portknocking.org: "Port knocking is a method of establishing a connection to a networked computer that has no open ports." A little further down on the page: "This is a form of IP over closed ports."
I was accepted to and visited Georgia Tech back when I was applying for universities. During my visit, I learned of the excellent HOPE Scholarship program; however, I am a NJ resident, so it didn't apply to me at the time.
I believe the parent's poster is partially wrong, though. IIRC, the scholarship doesn't provide for free books and tuition for "any college anywhere"; however, it does it for any public college in the state of Georgia provided the student still maintains a 3.00/4.00 cumulative GPA.
For GA residents with a B average in high school looking to go into a technical program, take a serious look at Georgia Tech.
I never took Latin, but 7 years of Spanish.;) I should have had a disclaimer along with my translations. They were provided to me by my professor. Thanks for the correction though.
QED is the abbreviation of the Latin expression "quod erat demonstrandum," which in English means "what has been proven" or "it is demonstrated."
It is typically used to signify the end of a mathematical (or other) proof. Unfortunately, I have never read Cryptonomicron (sp?), so I can't understand why the above poster would have a problem with another person using it. Maybe he thinks that people otherwise wouldn't have known the term unless they read it in the book?
Personally, one of my professors used it at the end of a proof in lecture one day and another kid asked what it meant. *shrug*
What irks me to no end are database freaks who have to do everything with a database, OO freaks who have to do everything with OO, and GP freaks who have to do everthing as pure GP. They're like guys who only know how to use a screwdriver, so they end up using the screwdriver to hammer in nails and chisel wood.
Sadly, that's one of the funniest, yet true, things I've heard.
The US government meddles in everyone's business because we want our oil supplies and reserves to be as large as Saddam's when the shit hits the fan and there isn't anymore oil to pump.
What if hydrogen-based technologies, electric cars, and everything else doesn't come through in time?
Let's face it. Every country's government does what it can to give it's own citizens the most, or at least it should be. The way the US is going about it is wrong, sneaky, and underhanded - I agree. But every battle is tied to maintaining relations with those in power of the oil, taking out drug cartels whose money goes to those trying to stop us, simply taking those out who control oil and taking it, or stirring up coups and revolutions to put those who see it our way into power in distant lands. The US is a puppetmaster.
Just my thoughts on a shitty topic, I rarely bother to think about. Call it ignorance, or call it peace of mind.
A sales employee who has never held such a position before, and has only 6-9 months under his belt, makes $55,000/year + commission + benefits at a Circuit City in northern New Jersey, where I live.
So what happens if I lose to this 12-year-old-elite-gaming-phenom in a 1v1 deathmatch, get mad, social engineer his MAC address out of him, set mine to his, cheat, and get it (his MAC) banned. Who's to stop that? It's basically his word against the server logs.:-/
It's this attitude and mentality that drags down our society. Funny how you post your "cool" idea as an "anonymous coward". Such a great idea, but you won't stand by it?
I wonder how many people have stolen "downloadable" products from brick-and-mortar stores simply because they're that sickly impatient. I'm sure I don't want to know.
The Palm Treo 750 also runs Windows Mobile (WM5) and is available through Cingular (*grumble*).

I myself was a master Jigglypuff-er. When 1v1, the *ching* is extremely effective and nasty.
I then wonder what my 3 digit id would fetch. ;)
One would think that if they fell on hard times, they'd use something free. Say...Linux?

Unless Best Buy goes out of business.

As I understand it, the ports do not have to be open. You can listen on the link-level and monitor incoming packets even if the port is closed.
At least, this is how the implementation this article mentions does it (or advertises it does). I've yet to thumb through the code.

They also set the bar at your "reasonable standard" - the factorization of a 2048-bit number brings in $200,000 USD.

I know that James Madison University uses Mulberry as their organization mail client as well, at least what the students use.
Note, this is only from word-of-mouth of my sister who attends there.
Who do you know that actually uses a production box running a version of Windows other than NT 4, 2000, or Advanced Server?
I just really don't see anyone using Windows XP in the wild.
This limit wouldn't really bother anyone who knows what they're doing.

I found that kind of disgusting.
Yeah, but I can't get QW to work with Windows XP. Any idea? Compatibility mode fails to work. ;/
