I read on an NOA (Nintendo of America)site (I followed a link on a GBA Dev Site fo I dont have the link to hand.) that listed the price of an official GBA Dev System.
The MAIN barrier apart from the price (I will get to that later) is the fact that you have to have an industry track record before they will sell you one.
So for those of us who have had an idea for a game that we would want to develop and TEST on real GBA's as opposed to emulators, but who have non-game coding jobs then they wont even let us think about buying it.
Mind you, the $10,000 - $20,000 price tag might just be a stumbling block even if the big N did stoop to offer me one.
While in the land of cheap hardware (the US) I picked up a rather nice little USB Bluetooth adapter by those lovely Belkin chaps.
Slipping this into the USB port (yes THE USB port) of my Sony Vaio C1VE (now you see why I said THE USB port:P ) lets me talk to my wonderful little Sony Ericsson T68i cell-phone (Tri-band, GPRS, POP3, IMAP4 and other goodies).
From there I can then use my GPRS to connect to the web.
According to ZDNET's Bandwidth Testing script (UK site only I think) I was getting a better connection via BT/GPRS than I normally get coppered into the PSTN network - go figure.
Actually just re-read the article I am replying to and this is exactly what The Evil Twin was saying to do - so instead of being a "nah nah ne nah nah look what I can do" post its now a "Yeah man - I agree and its all cool"
I do know however that the T68i IS available in the US - I saw it in more than a few of your reasonably prices electronics outlets - Circuit City for example (where it came in a really funky dark blue colour as opposed to the silver/grey of the UK) mind you I was in to buy DVD's - £13 for Blade 2 when it hadn't even been released when I got home and was pre-ordering at its normal UK retail of £19.99 - long live DVD region disabling.
Linux "numbering schemes" are a pile of marketing crap, made up by the distribution peoplel.
And if you bought a Banshee new then you are even more or a git than your "Linux 8.0" comment makes you out to be - I got one of those new about 3 years ago.
Why dont you go and learn what you are talking about before posting.
Linux isn't about version numbers, if anything the distributions should be numbered after the Kernel.
Besides running Debian as I do, I dont run ANY kind of version, I have the apps I need, the kernal I need and it works - who cares if its Linux XP or whatever.
And the "small" partition had better be > 4GB otherwise downloading 1.1GB files over http may just come unstuck unless you move your windows temp directory.
Once upon a time some guy named Sid converted the board came of Civilisation to the PC, and other platforms of the time.
The main reason for this (other than the cash) was, I believe to enable himself to play the game WITHOUT having to drag out the board and a load fof friends for a game that coul last days (never played the board game, but know friends who have and it CAN take ages).
As far as I remember the 1st versions didnt have multiplayer.
I quite happily play Freeciv against a couple of compubot players and Freeciv will give you a good run for your money, certainly better than the PC versions.
SO, Freeciv would be a GOOD choice.
Or MAME:) - dont forget to delete any roms within 24 hours that you download and dont own the hardware version of:)
It has basically everything that you will EVER need on it.
GPRS and GSM so that you can get on the web - anyone thinking of writing a WAP page based SSH client - then I could manage my servers on the run
IMAP4 and POP3 mail means that my email gets to me when I get it - and you can schedule it to check at various intervals.
One or two problems with it, but those are service provider based.
Sure MMS may be a fad, but hey its not like it was a main point in this phones favour anyway, just an interesting extra.
For the record BTW my previous phone was a Sony Z5
Main reason that this phone is so good tho is its long time between charges - currenly it says I got over 200 hours on standby, and that was 20 hours since I took it off charge.
As for the Camera - well thats just a gimmick really - mind you, didnt stop gadget-boy here getting one, tho I cant report on the quality of the pix, I dont have any way of getting them off the phone yet as my Service Provider is having problems finding my email server.
is not looking to the future and where Microsoft is headed with its product cost.
When I buy a piece of electronic equipment I do not expect to have to keep paying for the privilege of using it.
Microsoft WILL come up with an enforced subscription system for their OS's, and schemes like Palladium may just end up forcing that on everyone, after all if you are a "standard" windows user (like my parents and hell I wouldn't want to force them offline by making my dad have to learn Linux) palladium looks like a good thing, secure and "hey its built into what I use anyway".
So the answer is for people to TRY the alternatives - sure they may not be so pretty, or have all the functions, but then thats why Open Source works - if something is "missing" contact the developers and they will probably implement it if its something they missed, sure it might not be available immediately but you will have contributed.
Palladium will kill that kind of interaction, and make software (and some hardware) the sole juristiction of Microsoft.
This is not an anti-Microsoft rant, but it s one about freedom, something that those in the US celebrated 2 days ago, and those in China wish they had more of.
Hoping to get a Sparc Tadpole in the near future (and rip any Sun OS's off and Debianise the little bugger G)
Currently running a Vaio Picturebook (The Crusoe one) and having no probs (Tho haven't got round to Linuxing it - still running ME for a few Windoze apps that I need to run)
I have had an idea for a legal way of dealing with spam.
1 Set up a "I hate SPAM" website which details why spam is a bad thing. Create an email account and put a mailto link on the site. Put a statement that by emailing that address, you will auto send a copy of your SPAM archive and that this address is only used for this purpose.
2 Put all the spam you recieve as separate files into a folder
3 Write a script that auto sends the entire contents of the file as separate mails to anyone that emails the address on the webpage, but attaches a "thanks for requesting the file" and link to the page message" with each file individually, and also adds the "request" mail to the archive.
Dont forget to make the script intelligent enough to recognise mail that has been bounced back so that you dont end up with a mail server loop.
Well here in the UK the biggest Memory Stick available is 64Meg - in both MagicGate and non-MagicGate formats
Sony over here still seem to think the 128Meg stick is still in development (well at least thats what they keep telling me.
Does anyone know if there is any "Regionalisation" on Memory-Sticks, and if not, how much is a 256Meg Magic-Gate stick? cos I just have to get some nice chunky ones for my MS Walkman and my C1VE Crusoe VAIO
Well I don't know about the US army, but this Brit civilian sure likes his Crusoe (Sony Vaio C1VE)
I don't see why some people are saying "what use is a computer for every grunt in the field".
Surely they have heard the maxim "knowlege is power" and surely the more powerful your armed force is the better.
The amount of information that could be transmitted to them, along with tracking prediction (ie digital camera with motion prediction and rangefinding) - allowing cross hairs to be shown where the target will be, not just where he is.
Who cares what OS it would use/not use, recognise the technology for what it is - the 600Mhz Crusoe will quite happily play-back MP4/DivX movies, play Quake 3 and various other functions, and hive a battery life of 2.5 hours or greater, and only weighs 2.2Kg.
I am looking forwards to getting a quad battery and being able to use my Vaio from London to Osaka without having to worry about the battery going flat.
In short -
Transmeta Crusoe = GOOD
Low Heat = GOOD
Reduced loss of life in combat situations due to increased battlefield intelligence = VERY GOOD
Actually writing as an employee of an ISP that provides access to schools, the above is inaccurate. Someone had registered alta-vista.com and set it up as a porn site to catch people who mistyped altavista.com. The domain name was later purchased by altavista.com who now use both URL's. The old alta-vista.com was blocked by Cyber Patrol, and when the two URL's got tied together when altavista.com acquired alta-vista.com the blocking was also transfered to altavista.com. I have to agree that Cyber Patrol's methods of blocking are ridiculously bad - the number of "please unblock [site] as it has no adult content" mails we receive is crazy. They also block my own personal website.
I am sick of having convert to wav, or other sample type, then encode
I want my player/recorder to record on the fly
By connecting it to my cars CD player, I want to be able to play a CD and encode it at the same time - so that I can then put the CD back on the shelf next to my vinyl album collections and act as an efficient dust collector.
MP3 is THE future of music, the CD's are the archive backups.
Ahh ok.
Problem is I don't find anything to do with the incompetence of a "world leader" to be funny.
Maybe thats because you actually use (or should use) the phrase "Nuclear Weapons".
Still at least you did the world a favour by announcing your troll status to the word in your own name and not as an AC.
And for the record - Google is the search engine I use most.
Surely all that is needed is for people to put their location in an HTML meta-tag, then Google and the like will be able to search.
For example I could embed the information
city:London
zip:SW9
Then by searching for that string (I refuse to use the phrase Googling) in your fave search engine, you could find people in your area.
Also someone could write a plug-in for browsers to pick up that info and display it in some-way.
Hell if its that important, maybe a new formal meta-tag could be incorporated into the next version of the HTML standard.
Just a few thought
Your thoughts people :)
How about remaking Harry Potter with Gandalf AS Dumbledore and hobbits as the kids
Could be good for a laugh....
Harry Potter and the Cracks of Doom anyone....

Redundancy is good in networks, and bad in Slashdot posts
Lol - but I am AND GPRS.

WTF!!!!!!
What the hell is Linux 8.0
Linux "numbering schemes" are a pile of marketing crap, made up by the distribution peoplel.

But wheres the sense of achievement of getting /.d if we all use the cache - /.ing is a sign that you have raised yourself above trollbait level.
Its a sign of peer approval.
And the "small" partition had better be > 4GB otherwise downloading 1.1GB files over http may just come unstuck unless you move your windows temp directory.
Why not just play PuzzleBobble on MAME - or for a tetrisy feel PUYO-PUYO
Of course there does come the thorny ownership issues.
Freeciv NOT Multiplayer.
