    I think most people here DO get it. That's the point. They're trying to solve a legal problem with a technical solution. It's almost always FUNNY when people do this.

    Besides that, they're trying to cover themselves legally in a country where "justice" is increasingly up for sale to the highest bidder. They're up against CBS, NBC, FOX, etc. They're GOING to lose. If they did real-time DNA checks to a birth records database, they would STILL lose because the big companies would just appeal to a judge they've bought out.

    BTW: What does it take for me to move north of the border? It seems to be an increasingly appealing proposition these last few years.

    Um... I don't think anyone here has any high opinion of Cerf's opinion. That's the point. He's not quallified to comment on privacy or on code openness, esp for somehting as important as this.

    I think the FBI wants the general public to think that his opinion matters, which is why it's important that it show up on slashdot.

    Read the headline this way:
    FBI finds 3rd grader who says Carnivore isn't that bad! General public rejoyces that their privacy is safe!

    Hmm. I see both sides here. Yes, please give me credit if you rip off my work. BUT...

    I thought 1/2 the point of Open Source was to Learn By Example. Which means that often code that you've written looks a LOT like something else. After all, EVERYTHING has been done at least once already.

    I've viewed source on thousands of webpages. How many thank-yous do I have to post? They all helped me develop a (crappy) sense of style, so they all contributed, but in the end if I write it, it's mine.

    Note this doesn't apply to directly ripping off things like slashcode, where the code is being used verbatim. But overall...

    Hrm.

    This thing is so FAST! It's much faster than IE or Netscape (any versions) on my system. It's still got a few little things, but I'm betting those are from the renderer and not K-Meleon.

    Why don't we have a web-browser than can render /. in 1 second already?

    I can rewrite the quote as,
    "Someone [said] if the calvin & Hobbes comics were banned, the only way to prevent that knowledge from being transmitted would be to ban it in all its forms ... even on t-shirts and hidden in image files - all of these would have to be banned because the pictures are so easily retrievable from all of them."


    But what if you had Mssr. Watersons (IIRC) permission? Then why would a 3rd party be allowed to ban it? DeCSS is not copyrighted by the MPAA, but they are trying to control distribution of it.

    There are cases where this is allowed:
    1) Copyright infringement. But only a copyright holder can prosecute this (IANAL)
    2) Obscenity. Um... this stuff turns you on???

    BTW: I'm mostly paraphrasing from other posts. I have no thoughts of my own...

    While I did not have the honor of meeting this individual, I am quite glad to hear that he was able to overcome his disability and live an active, interesting life, if only in the virtual world.

    I have a brother-in-law with the same condition and am sad to say that he does not get the same opportunities due, primarilly, to foolish restrictions placed by his parents. It's incredibly depressing to see someone inteligent waste away due to something like this and not being able to exercise the one facility that the disease has not taken away, their intelect.

    Once again, we see advantages to the online world that we will never match in the real one. I think the dedication is a great way to remember him.

    I DO care about myself, but I'd rather die in an accident with a cell-phone using idiot than live to be 70 and die of lung cancer from the unbreathable air...

    On the other hand, if as a species we could see more than 10 seconds into the future, we could solve BOTH issues.

    I swear, humans are useless, I include myself in that. I just hope we kill ourselves soon so life can get back to evolving something worthwhile.

    The most popular desktop operating system and office package in the world, the one that MANY /.ers have to help maintain, has a HUGE vulnerability.

    I'm glad to find this stuff on /., but maybe we want a "MS Security Issue" section started.

    You know, if NOBODY owned these things, we'd be a shitload safer. But since we're going there, I think I need that Abrams M1-A1.

    IANAME, but I would guess manufacturing and cost reasons. AL is much more difficult to weld than most steels (excepting stainless) and is less plentiful.

    Both guesses, consult a Mechanical Engineer for a real answer...

    It took me almost a full 20 seconds to remember that the next id game is DOOM III, not Q-IV.

    Too bad the page is SO graphics heavy. It'll suck if your stuck on a modem (Ha-HA!)
