MS is far more evil than Apple has ever been. I recall that GNU boycotted anything Apple for the longest time for not allowing clones and keeping their hardware closed. No gcc for the Mac. In fact, no GNU anything for the Mac was the official stand for a long time. Why do we not do the same with Microsoft? Boycott all things MS. Update the GNU license to prohibit any MS software from interacting with GNU based software, etc.? Fight MS with their own IP law and at their own level.
While I do agree that MS is evil, Apple has had their fair share of evil-moments (pulling the licensing for clones or some such thing comes to mind off-hand)... doing something like that would really prove to be difficult to do, and would be more than a little counterproductive; as it would put GNU on a similar level with MS (hindering the usefullness of their tools via licensing restrictions)... on top of that, i'd imagine that you'd piss off a good portion of the 'borderline' group (the people that have win9x/nt/2000/dos/whatever and linux and whatever other OSs installed)... making it illegal for them to use their favorite GNU tools in those OSs.

03/28/2000 - Hackers' Socialistic Leanings Could Stop Hack Removal
The settlement in the Cyber Patrol case reported yesterday is in danger since it was learned that the hackers who created the "cphack" virus are part of a neo-Socialistic cult that renounces individual ownership of software.
In the terms of the settlement, Microsystems Software Inc. (makers of Cyber Patrol and a subsidiary of Mattel Corp.) had been promised that they would be given all copyrights to the hacking virus. They had hoped to use the copyright ownership as a leverage to force websites mirroring the hacking virus to remove it. However, it turns out that the hackers had given away their ownership of the virus to "the people" and thus are not legally able to transfer ownership to Microsystems.
The hackers are members of a cult based in Finland called The Free Source that, among other things, practices communal ownership of software. Its members release their software under something called the Glorious People's License (or GPL) which basically states that no one can own the software or put restrictions on copying it.
"The Free Source has been recruiting on line for years now," says Ted Phillips, an expert on modern cults, "Their membership probably numbers in the thousands, although it is difficult to tell. They often work by enticing teens and young adults with the promise of free software and beer, before they start encouraging them to read parable-laced screeds that further indoctrinate them into the cult. They have been relatively harmless in the past, but now that they seem to be trying to destroy parents' abilities to protect their children it is clear that they are a danger to our society."

Okay -- here's my only question -- how long do you guys think it'll be before somebody bothers to come up with an 'adcritic.com' like network for those of us with TiVo/RePlay boxen? (I personally have become something of an addict of adcritic and watching great ones like the 'wasabi' bud ad and the 'lebatts food fight'.. (the last days of clinton was really good too)... maybe I'm just a freak this way.. but judging from the hits that adcritic claims it gets i'm forced to assume not... this could be a moneymaker for someone... (and I'd sure appreciate to just hop onto by tube and say "hey guys... you seen this ad yet?!? it's funnier than hell!")... just a thought...

i may be way off base here, but i seem to recall that the UCITA had some wording in it that disclaimed software creaters from any liability from damages caused to a business by the use of that software...? (or something along those lines?)... i really don't recall the specifics of this, and it could very well have been part of one of the other whacked-ass laws that have been passed/proposed in the past couple of years...
Please excuse the ignorance... but what was their major malfunction? All I recall about them was that they made a pretty cool set-top-box that was a little too pricey for my wallet at the time (i think i was like 17 or something -- if that)
-I'm not an alcoholic -- they go to meetings! I'm a DRUNK!-
I was surfing Yahoo!News (alright -- not necessarily the most "reputable" news source out there.. but it was handy...) and they had a brief timeline laid out on where this all started and it said something about *WAY* back (like 1990?!?) the FTC (sorta?) secretly investigated collusion between IBM and MS -- but then didn't mention anything else about it... at this time weren't they both working on OS2/nt together (as well as still (albeit shakily) working together on DOS stuff)? i guess as an outsider (and something like a 10 year old at the time (read: i didn't care much about the news) i didn't follow much... but i don't see where the collusion was... was this the DR_DOS issue?
Am I mistaken in thinking that AT&T already owns @Home? Is that why the FCC wants them to back off of the TW/AOL stuff (roadrunner)? (for what it's worth, i was much happier with my @home service than i ever was with my RR service... but that was also a swich trom a beta tester in a town that had (at best) a few hundred subscribers to a standard user in a town that has several thousand...)...
just a thought....
- Left to my own devices, I surely would destroy myself...
>Although The Offspring shouldn't think that, just because they support Napster, they can take liberties with Napster's trademarks, >this is still screwy. Napster shouldn't be pissing off any more people then they need to -- The Offspring were very vocal >supporters of Napster, and what will they be now?
... couldn't agree more.. while napster does need to protect their own asses... the people that've been posting that "napster should have attempted to work out some sort of licensing agreement with offspring" (which, IMNSHO, Offspring would have (and perhaps did?) denied (to make a point perhaps?) have the right idea. Napster has alienated quite a few diehard fans (like myself... banned for downloading limpbizkit-live-masterofpuppets(metallica cover).mp3); is being sued by some of the largest corporate coglamorates out there... on top of lawsuits from a few *big-name* artists (read: lots of money behind shutting them down)... you would certainly think that it would be in their best interest to keep whatever strange bedfellows they have... perhaps their lawyers are looking for a way to make back some of what they're gonna lose in the other lawsuits... just a thought....

NetworkWorld Fusion (idg.net subsidiary) has a pretty good feature on this this week, and from what i gathered from it most netadmins/sysengineers *wanted* to go back after people in the process of penetrating their systems, but the overwhelming majority *wouldn't*... they opted for setting up 'honeypots' and the like to lure the criminals in and monitor them (presumably) long enough to confirm identity/ensure enuf info is gathered for conviction... check it out... good article.
