I think the concern is that we'll enslave hordes of helpless mammals to act as chemical factories for our own purposes.
If that is your worry on this then you are too late. Cows. (We enslave them, and force them to convert water and grass to milk.) : )
Seriously, this is not much different IMHO, from breeding cattle to have udders that are vastly larger than would have occured in wild bovine... The transgenic part of it is whats kind of creepy.
And, in other news, The Spiderman movie thats coming out next summer will have an updated origin story. (like the new Ultimate comic did, too..) Apparently, ol' Peter Parker gets bitten by a genetically altered spider, rather than a radioactive one. I guess radiation isn't as unknown and high-tech as it used to be, whereas anything genetic seems to be filling the technobabble gap now that we know that radiation mainly just kills you in extreme doses, rather than mutates you into superheros.
For the longest time, back when I had Television, I thought that the Disney channel had become the Brave Little Toaster Channel. Every freaking time I surfed past, THERE IT WAS!
It was almost as bad as the Milo and Otis Networks of my Youth. (Shudder.)
Just one of the many reasons I mostly avoid TV now.
Hm. I'm beta testing this, so I kind of think I can weigh in here..
I agree with you about the fact that the whistler UI is orders of magnitude more advanced than that of Gnome (and it's going to be skinnable, too! woo hoo!) But not that hardcore geeks won't want to use it.
The annoying things (You mentioned the search assistant, which is a true abomination spawned by people who fondly remember MS-BOB.) can be turned off. Also, its wicked fast, and at least as stable (in pre-beta 2 form, even) as Win2K.
Personally, I am really excited about the Skinning functions. Right now, they have one kinda neat skin, and one horrifically butt-ugly one, but it shows a lot of promise.
The registration stuff is going to be annoying, but its not going to bother me, as I only run MS os's on my game machine, anyway.
Wired magazine (I would link to the wired website, but they are not owned by the same folks anymore, and that would feel just wrong.) has always had a feature in it where they post a picture of wacky p-mail that they receive. At first, this just consisted of stuff like envelopes that were extremely detailed Photoshop masterpieces cut out and formed into an envelope.
In the last couple of issues, they received a Mac Keyboard that was stripped of all its keys, save ones that had the shipping address. They have been sent clear plastic boxes with visible circuit boards that had the address spelled out in LED's, and other cool things that frankly, I am too lazy to bother remembering, save that I was surprised that they had actually arrived at the Wired offices.
Anyway, getting back on track here, Wired was promoting this kind of tomfoolery well in advance of the Annals etc. etc. So there.
Then you need ot go to your local comic book store, and have them start bringing in the reprint of AKIRA for you.
Some of you may remember the Epic Comics release of Akira back in the 80's that Hemos referenced... Well, Dark Horse Comics has gotten the rights to this fantastic series, and is going to reprint the entire run, in the form of six HUGE trade paperbacks. Granted, these are not in color, (the original japanese version wasn't either, I think..) but they have a new, more accurate and understandable translation than the Epic run.
Dark Horse is also publishing Trade Paperbacks of the truly awesome Lone Wolf and Cub, another comic that was all over the place in the 80's. This one is the complete, in-order run. (And its supposed to be on the order of 6000+ pages long!) Dark horse is bringing it to america in its a original, paperback-sized format that it was released in Japan. Both of these are not to be missed, and are worth every penny.
"BINGO! Give that DOG a DOOLY from the FAIR! (GOOD MORNING!!!!, again)"
"Tex SEX! The HOME of WHEELS! The dripping of COFFEE!! Take me to Minnesota but don't EMBARRASS me!!"

IN a more serious vein, it does sound like the hard drive problem either won't happen or will be easy to overcome... YOW!
* All of the systems with "color" seemed to have neon green and neon pink.. usually one on the other.
* William Shatner is still using that same Toupee.
* Most of those computer ads were really looking for an audience.
Incidentally, I had that star raiders game for my atari, and it was great! That game had suprisingly complex gameplay for that time, and the added keypad controller was the bomb. Lots of space dogfighting history here.
Case in point. The US military wants a better communication system to allow them to talk to each other in case of a nuclear attack. Many years later, geeks get to discuss civilian spinoffs from military products on the grandchild of that same network. Somehow I don't think that the Military guy who specced the system figured that years later it would be used as the greatest porn delivery system ever.
I have been using io for a long time. Of course, I joined io because they have a really short domain name, and I am lazy. That and they are cheap and easy to use.
And I think that Steve Jackson would shut IO down before letting Carnivore in.
How about because the story Lowtax posted about all this fun was posted Yesterday? Yes, it happened last week, but the story this slashdot posting is about happened yesterday.
That aside, why is/. posting about it today? shouldn't they wait at least a week?
I think the simple reason that didn't get marked as "Flamebait" is that its a reasoned point of veiw, and is directed at the point of the article.
This is the biggest problem I see with the moderating system here at the ol' Casa slashdot. people have been moderating stuff they don't agree with as flamebait.
Folks, flamebait isn't something you disagree with. Things you disagree with are what drives a good discussion. Flamebait is something along the lines of "Apple/Linux/microsoft/ect. Sucks!" In this case, the poster had an opinion, expressed it, and was moderated accordingly.
And just so I can actually have an opinon here thats actually germane to the main discussion, out of the last few systems I built, I have been happy to go with the less than cutting edge CPU. Until DDR chipsets get out, IMHO anything faster than a 900 is just chrome. nobody except freak gamers (And I count myself as one of those) and people doing multimedia production will need that kind of power. Just how fast do you need that kernel to compile anyway?

The LEGO Desk

You know, this is truly amazing. Not that the guy got his desk, but that the company agreed to it to begin with. If I was that person's boss, I would probably take them into my office, sit them down, and quietly ask them if they were out of their tiny little minds.
Of course, this is what comes from having a market where anyone with real skills is a prime target for headhunters. I bet the reason the person who gets the desk made that really cool request is to insure that they would never have to leave the job they were on, then someone agreed to all their terms. Amazing. I would really love to know what the owner of that cool desk does for a living.
And, just think, someone could actually put a lego computer case on that lego desk...

Accurate, honest, and true. But harsh.
According to the article, it is actually nine feet tall. the second picture (linked up above) seemes to be of the correct proportions.

Not to mention $250 for the visor itself.
