I'm sorta working on this in my spare time. finding a PCI-voice modem that works in Linux was the biggest problem that I found. Also let my voice modem be my answering machine.
I saw this trick in a electronics mag a few months ago. Three tones ( same as a 'number not in service'. you can record it yourself with a mic stuck to a phone (dial a number out of service). Then add your message to the end. I found that within 1 week I reduced the crank calls to 1 a day and after two weeks almost none at all. Between that and the answering machine w/speaker I have not talked to a sales droid for over 10 years.
It works is this: the automated systems 'listen' for this tonal sequence and put your number on the 'do not call' list automaticly - they don't want to waste their precious dialing time and cost. However; if one of those systems gets a human/answering machine it calls back. If it gets a modem it puts you on the junk fax list and sells to other companies.
Look how we are still encumbered with that. The ramifications of quick judgements last for years. I feel that all measures to 'combat terroroism' should have limitations. That way we can have longer discussion to hammer out details that do not have the ramifications of the quick 'get it done now' quick fix.
Well I, for one, prefer the Cordless Optical mice from Logitech - It's fast, accurate and I don't get snagged up from that biatch of a cord. I fell they respond faster and are better for aiming (precision) I have used 'ball' mice and was sceptical of the optical mice, but I won't purchase another one again. Furthermore: I use USB optical Cybork 3d-gold stick for the left hand - better than the keyboard I have found. It has a decent amount of buttons, and works well.
pop-oever, po-unders, scripting... bah. I'm beginning to think Podigy had the right ida. Limit what a advertizer could do in the form of advertizing. (aka the bottom ad bar) At least the ads where related to the area that you browsed.
When is advertizers gonna wake up and make a site designed to show off the newest toy?
Considering the news was saying that most terrorists didn't even have electricity let alone computers? (at least in Afganistan) Eg. 3rd world countries are worried more about eating and having shelter than high-tech crypto.
Furthermore; the intellegence agencies said that Bin Laudon stopped using his Palm because it is easy to track.
So again who is it going to catch and how? Did they show that the terrorists are using encryption at all yet?
I saw a brief video of the leader of Iran... giving blood. I thought that this was curious. IMHO is he seeing us giving blood and think that the best way to show that he is not involved is to do what we are doing? I know this is doing some second guessing. I too am looking for answers
Compatable for what? Funtionality or code? Depending on the application there is a difference.
If you are coding a app to run on specific hardware (vertical app or black box), the choices are pretty easy. Make it perform the same functions . If it means a rewrite because of new hardware or lack thereof, do it.
If say, you want to be compatable with everybodys generic hardware, you can write specific compilers for them Example Sierra used a generic gaming system they wrote for most of the adventure games they made. It used its own language for describing the functions/graphics of the game. Provide a new game pak/art/music/etc, and viola - a new game. The game engine stayed the same (or very similar)
If both the hardware and software used is generic (compilers etc.) then design for the LCD (Least Common Denominator). This make a app more horizontal but can be run on a wide varity of systems and created with a wide variety of tools. Example: I just wrote a small tool to move cache files for my UT games. I wrote it in AWK because it was simple, and can be run on Linux/Windows/Mac/BSD/etc. Furthermore; it is more or less generic (all of you know AWK right?)
The one thing that breaks these rules is whiz-bang software. Eg UT Q3 Q4, cutting/bleeding edge technology. Mostly here you are trying to impress people or to make changes to something already, in hopes that it will be the next generation of generic tools/hardware. This is almost the first case (black box) because it will have lots of bugs, may be cranky as hell, and nasty to code.
Don;t get me wrong, compatability is good, but you have to ask yourself - "Just who is this for?"
They key is running a secure firewall. I found some that block the hell out of the normal TCP ports but are wide open to the UDP ports. If the connection is made via UDP, and has its own microTCP stack(for reliability) It would make that expensive firewall look like vapor.
On setting up your very own firewall it is better to DENY all, and then allow some. It makes you have to review WHY you want that hole in it. Trojans like this will cause minimal damage if you have prepared.
It's allways a good idea to monitor your net traffic as well. (ntop, ngrep, etc) thet way when your usage goes up for some reason not explained (new software install etc.) it is easier to track down
Strange, I thgought the reason they do cache a site was to avoid the slashdot effect. As long as they don't claim they own the content they cache, so what? Your brand new shiny page is seen by more people that way. If you really want to keep Images away from being copied you either encrypt them or password protect them from generic search engines. That's a reason for thumbnails as well.
I thought the reason a ISP had a local copy of USENET (newsfeed) was to reduce traffic on the upstream internet pipes, and to defer the costs of having a dedicated newsfeed. EG a massive cache of information. This stinks more of morality than of buisness to me. (all those p0rno groups)
Lets expand on the idea of a blackhole list. and dump all traffic from some sites.
Benefits:
Suddenly they would have no more complaints - they could no longer see the rest of the world.
They would not be able to hack our machines. (prevention of terrorist activity via USA act)
Modem I found was a ActionTec 56k Internal PCI Call Waiting Modem (purple box) Model: PCI56012-01Cw ..., Linux' on it as well)
(box has 'works with
I have not tested fully the voice features so far but the modem functions work fine under linux so far.

The internet is doing it, not Anthrax. Considering that lots of people still do have access to e-mail, regular mail will not end any time soon.
Furthermore; there will always be a need for regular mail for packages, and larger items and some secure communication.

No, not for that but those physics classes are are biatch without one.
My top things:
scientific calculator: (for figuring the tip)
remote control (for TV and X10 modules)
IrDa link to PC for Time syncing to Atomic Time
List of important phone numbers/appointments
Perfect case of Dog bites human. I hope Napster gets a good bite out of the recording labels. Pitt bull any one?
Some uses I could think up was:
Use for a drive in a diskless workstation. (and routers/firewalls, etc)
Graphics rendering node (the massive datasets they need)
Cluster computing applications (web sites, data caches)
Your 'most accesed readonly'' files (can you say websites)
Just wish they were cheaper
And with a bit of work could lead the cops to your stolen phone/goods. Would be nice to have a GPS modem as well for tracking stolen hardware.

"Will do sex for Quake3". Make the spouses and porn site happy too.

Oh wait ... thats what search engines are for.
This would mark the start of the suicide booth in Futurerama
Don't forget the Earth-Worm Jims, and the corresponding Xearth-worms. The polka dot worms, and the dreaded rainbow worm.
Consider this.
Government Investigates MS for Monopolistic practices.
They need put up results on WEB site
Someone 'mentions' new licencing scheme to Gov.
Concludes that calling MS a monopoly would put Gov in difficult position
Gov finds it can't use MS Frontpage
Gov goes to Linux
MS looses massive amounts of money on Governement contracts.
We laugh our asses off.

Sounds like pure paranoia talking to me.
That of the Pakistani Leader Yasir Arafat giving blood

Remember you have to mail _before_ you do the rm. Thats why the mail portion doesn't work.
