Every day I see more and more items coming out of our educational system that make me ask 'where the heck are the parents' when these dumbass policies are being implemented?
"And juries aren't there to debate the merits of the law, only to decide if the individual in question broke it."
And thus the BIGGEST problem with the "PEOPLE" in this country, believing that when you're on a a jury your are simply there to follow a judges orders. Serving on a jury is NOT simply deciding whether a person did or did not break the law but is the one time in your life that as an individual you are not only permitted but dutybound to sit in judgement of unjust laws. Jury duty is the one opportunity that the average joe can actually be "we the people". Why do you think lawyers get to screen jury members? They're looking for those people who actually have an ounce of deductive reasoning ability and who MIGHT apply it.
15Gal x 3.45 = $51.75 = 480 miles driven @ 32mpg 15Gal x 3.85 = $57.75 = 700 miles driven @ 46mpg
For an extra $6 per tankful I get an extra 220 miles. Where do these numbers come from? My comparison of my 2000 Jetta TDI vs. my neighbors 2007 Chevy HHR (a pretty typical gas powered car).
I'd go on about not having to change the oil about every 12,000 miles but I have to admit that gas engines has REALLY improved in this area, the old every 3000 mile rule doesn't really exist anymore.
The only maintenance I have to do to the Jetta TDI is change the oil and replace the timing belt every 100,000 miles. If a person plans on keeping their vehicles until they're no longer viable as transportation, they will save you TONS of cash in the long run.
I own a 1999 and a 2000. You are absolutely right to worry about the age. Not for the mechanical aspects, just every other part of the car. In VW's ANYTHING made of plastic will break, that includes ALL of the interior parts (I have a dangling door panel), the TRANSMISSION LINKAGE, glove boxe doors, console, cupholders, etc. ALL of that crap starts breaking in short order. Hence why I'd REALLY like some competition in the market place.
Ok, so as I suspected, this concept throws alot of people and creates quite a bit of 'what-if' discussions.
As someone who has owned two diesel Jettas for the last 7 years and with few exceptions paid around 50 cents more per gallon . . . . . my range is about 700 miles per tank with both car (between 43-49 mpg). Most people I know that run gas cars fuel up every 350-400 miles. That coupled with decrease maintenance costs, and a straight-line highway commute of 50 miles each way everday makes them a great choice of transportation.
If you live in the city and don't use the cruise control much, commute in stop & go, etc, I highly recommend the other technology, hybrids. You'll find no one who bad mouths diesels more than someone who buys one because they see the 50mpg sticker then only drives 5 miles to work in stop and go and doesn't even let the engine get to operating temperature.
Let's see, in order to maintain my current lifestyle, I NEED a bank, and I NEED a phone. I can switch companies, but all in all I still need someone to provide me those services. Guess what . . . . I DON'T need facebook. If it was truly more hated than those other services, people wouldn't be using it.
IANAL but to me that sounds like the credit card company is being an accomplice to the crime by not divulging the location of the criminal. Of course, if you're not liable for the charges then nothing has actually be stolen from you.
I'm sorry, but am I the only one who choked when he said 5000 computers to 10 IT staff? Maybe I'm out of date but the last average I heard from Gartner was like 115:1, is this not the case anymore? And I thought I was overworked w/175 pc's and an equal amount of IP phones.
I think the only people that have the right to due process are American citizens? Or have we granted all of our rights and protections as citizens to everyone in the world? Nevermind, scratch that question.
Let me make this perfectly clear. Outside of an airport where these CZAR's have been given carte blanche authority from the prior regime, these people are NOT FBI, CIA, or have any other power outside of providing security for the transportation systems in this country. If one of these "special agents" showed up at my door, I would be calling the local police and have them removed my property, NOT inviting them inside for coffee or tea. People, STOP just giving away the rights and freedoms you have left! We the people need to stop allowing more and more government agencies from being created and just turning over everytime some new three-letter acronym with a badge shows up!
Perhaps I'm just getting old and I remember the bad ole 80's where we had this image of communist countries where men in trench coats would walk up and ask for papers and the citizenry would comply out of fear that they would disappear in the middle of the night. Those who may remember that should also be aware the the step before that is GIVING UP YOUR FREEDOMS FOR GREATER SECURITY.
Benjamin Franklin is probably rolling over in his grave.
Although this post is causing quite a stir around issues of anonymity, how bout the main geek factor here? Doing business with the 800 pound gorilla of ISP's is simply another way of throwing away your rights. They cover their arses with AUP's & TOS's and really couldn't care less about their customers individual rights or the Constitutional protections of American citizens. Seems like it may be time to start utilizing guerrilla tactics in regards to all public posts made.

work as well as that 'Do Not Call' list.
Oh, we've seen this before . . . . . . . it's was called "voluntary" safety belt laws.
Slowly turn up the heat on the frog rather than toss it in the boiling pot.

. . . . attempts to legislate fads are a really BAD idea.
So those guys who put that they have 25 years experience with Linux on their resumes are lying?? *gasp*
LOL! Yes, in my 1999.5 model the shifter linkage is made of plastic. http://en.allexperts.com/q/Volkswagen-Repair-833/2008/10/95-passat-shift-linkage.htm The bottom one is the stock part, the top is an aftermarket replacement.
Economic argument?

Isn't this just a reprint of this article http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-12718251 from 3 months ago?
Did this make anyone else think about the 'automated repair station' from that episode of Enterprise?
the "hook em when they're young" guy no longer works at Apple? Remember these guys were the originators of the "put an Apple in every school" plan.
is why we have so damn much SPAM!!!!!
Criminals waive their rights to be protected by the rules of society when they voluntarily disregard those rules in the first place.
