What I find most amazing about this whole thing is that Jobs keeps repeating the same mistakes that made Apple the #2 computer maker in the world (as opposed to #1). Apple computers have always had this 'elitest' mentality, more expensive, insufficient quantity of freely available applications due to a closed hardware standard. Meanwhile the IBM compatible cleaned up not due to superior product but openly replaceable components and a variety of applications that could be traded, installed, hacked, improved, etc. . . . .

I personally couldn't care less about the iPhone, but I do own a touch and the ability to use a variety of "non-blessed" apps makes it a more useful device as there is a greater variety of things that CAN be done with it. Remember the old BBS days? You could cruise the different file download areas and oh all the wonderful little trinkets you could find and do with your pc? My touch is starting to become the same way. A truly easy to use portable computer.

Does teen masturbation now count as a sex act with a minor? Even if it's yourself?? Holy s&^*! we'd have to give every teen out there a criminal record!

The question is what do you want the computer (or appliance) to be able to do after that four second boot? All the supporting software to do all the whizbang stuff (games, graphics, etc) takes time to load.

I decided awhile back that I simply wanted a device that I could power up quickly, surf the web, check email, oh, and had to be portable. Just last month I got such a device. It powers on instantly, finds and connects to wi-fi rapidly, the browser opens quickly, etc. It does exactly what I needed it to do. It's an IPOD Touch. Many years ago I was told by someone to "do what you love, that makes it not work, because you enjoy what you do" (badly paraphrased). I took that advice very literally and fell in love with working with computers at a very early age.

I've been in my field for 19 years and still don't see myself burning out anytime soon. I enjoy the challenge, the variety, etc. The worst part of my job is working with people who are in the field because they 'fell into it', or just do it to make money. They're usually always in a hurry for the quick fix, or really couldn't care less about providing true value and service to their customers (y'know the type, really hates end-users, etc).

In my last interview, the interviewer made the point that he prefers to hire individuals who truly enjoy working with technology and not do it just because it's their job, but have a desire to learn and continuously develop new ways of doing things.

I can't argue the last paragraph at all. Except to say that from your perspective I must be one of those few people that makes money doing what I love.

Now if I could only figure out a way to only do it six months a year so I could spend the other six hiking across Europe. :)
