  1. Re:I have to say I'm a little frustrated.... on Pentagon Seeks a New Generation of Hackers · · Score: 1

It looks like you are looking for a shortcut. In any case, if you are seriously going to do hacking you have to be extremely inquisitive and have lots of patience. A CS degree might give you general knowledge that will help you plan a strategy but specific knowledge of how a system works only comes from playing with it. Also going to college gives you a chance to play with hardware and software that you might not have otherwise been able to and that's the real value.

  4. And why do people still pay attention to analysts? on Apple Tablet Rumors Again (Still?) · · Score: 3, Insightful

Almost every bit of information they have is second or third hand (a guy heard from a guy who heard from a guy). They are barely one step above a rumor site. Most of them don't have the expertise to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Industry Analysts who look at industry trends and give advice to executives can be useful but analysts for financial institutions (e.g. Gene Munster for Piper Jaffray) that are making specific predictions about product introductions have a (not so) hidden agenda. Get people to buy now on optimistic news and dump later when it proves to be bogus. Remember, they make money in both directions.

Ok, not a load of crap, but is far from convincing. Don't get me wrong. I believe in evolution but I find the fossil record to be suggestive, not definitive. I find other evidence, (genetics, etc) more convincing. Think about it: how many fossil samples do we have? Of those how many are intact? I'm not sure I would hazard a scientific theory on so few samples. And how do they determine relatedness? By similar appearance. It's kind of ridiculous. It seems to have all of the legitimacy of phrenology. I can see how creationists have a hard time accepting the fossil record as definitive proof of evolution.

  7. The whole test is flawed and misleading... on Windows 7 "Not Much Faster" Than Vista · · Score: 1

I'm not a Microsoft fan, but this test is bogus. Windows Vista has had a lot of performance tweaks since it came out. Vista's reputation for horrible performance is based on initial impressions from when it first came out. I'd be interested to see how the latest version of Vista compares to Windows XP. If Windows 7 is 5% better than Vista is right now, then people are going to have a much better initial reaction to it than Vista and performance won't be a barrier to switching from XP.

This also raises the other point where this test falls down. Measured performance is not the same as perceived performance. Most people don't sit there with a stop-watch and measure how long something takes. What really matters to most people is the responsiveness of the system. Vista failed here. It basically attracted attention to the areas where it was most slow by interfering with doing other things while some operation was taking forever (e.g. copying files, etc). A lot of these issues can be smoothed over with better threading, etc. I think Microsoft has learned that lesson. I'm not sure whether Windows 7 will be faster than XP in measured performance but I bet it will feel as fast or faster.

Uh, you do know that RAM is cheap, right? I understand that it's annoying to buy more RAM to use an OS that has no additional features that are of interest except support, but really who runs computers with 512 MB of RAM? For corporations with thousands of computers this might be annoying. On the other hand, since they have thousands of computers they can probably afford it. I don't think consumers will care that much. This seems to be a tempest in a teapot to me.

I am really tired of these Malthusian predictions. Technological innovation will take care of most of this problem (e.g. DWDM, DOCSIS 3.0, etc). I wonder who funded this study? When this is held up as an example of humiliation it cheapens the concept of humiliation by surplanting it with the offensive.
