For all the Lucas bashing I see in every Star Wars thread, I see dozens of these as well (except these tend to be modded higher). Do you just paste them straight from old threads or what?
... do us all a favor and save your (valid!) political statement for some election in the future when either of the major-party candidates are "pretty good".
Star Wars isn't about being a professional, it's about being a hero. And in the real world, not every Tom Dick and Harry can be a heroic Jedi or a legendary rebel commander (or in many cases, even a tick less than completely obnoxious). It really shouldn't be any surprise that SWG is a colossal disappointment to most Star Wars fans; especially those who come to realize they're more of a bantha herder than a Jedi knight.
I'm no SWG player, but I've heard there's talk of removing the Jedi capabilities. I think this is probably a great idea. It'll give players some icons to respect, rather than assuming that they'll be an online conqueror of worlds if they just play a little more. The game should really just be interesting enough that gamers are content just to be participating in the action going on around them.
The short answer is that the only reason they're bothering with this is to sell over-priced systems to kids with a ton of (their parents') money, a la Alienware. Granted, there may be more of a market than this, but this particular market segment is what has them seeing dollar signs.
Earth is a dangerous place, and the human race barely escaped extinction once already. We need to get life all over the place, and at the top of that list, human life. By spreading us all over, we preclude the largest list of possible extinction scenarios.
If the human race can play nicely for another 300 years, then I whole-heartedly support moving ourselves to other planets. Otherwise, we deserve our fate, and would do the rest of the universe a favor by blowing ourselves to hell completely and totally, sooner rather than later. Hopefully the cockroaches will survive, and someday evolve into a better race.
It always surprises me that people can say with a straight face (in online terms, anyway) "you hate your job (and thus the majority of your life)? So what?! You're getting paid!"
I work in a nice air-conditioned office. I know the AC is there for the machines, but I get to come along for the ride. I don't have to work outside on rainy days, or worry about sunburn on sunny ones. I sit in a chair, stare at a monitor and type if I'm in my office or stare at other people and talk if I'm in a meeting. My job doesn't leave me physically tired and sore at the end of the day. The chances of physical injury are extremely low.
Working outside really isn't too bad, particularly if you live in a warmer climate. And believe it or not, some people genuinely dislike staring at a monitor all day.
I did in fact click the link and read the "study". From a seemingly fair quantity of information, I was able to conclude... nothing. I'm convinced that statisticians and technical researchers need a bit more training about how to communicate like human beings.
Unless I'm mistaken, they were baking CD's at 175F to simulate aging? I'm pretty sure that if you were to bake me at 175F for a length of time, you would arrive at different results than actually allowing me to age.
skill is the application of knowledge. A degree is proof of knowledge, and thus proof of possibility of skill, which is much more certain than someone with no degree. Even so, I think you're just being flippant.
You must've been watching a different set of Clone Wars cartoons than I was. The set I watched was a highly sophomoric bout of superhero-worship, whose characters lacked humanity every bit as much as the cardboard characters of Episodes 1 and 2. It was exactly the same sort of tripe as the last two movies (ooh, look how bold and resourceful Padme is!), with an extra dose of STUPID injected into its forehead (jousting droids? A gigantic, floating stamping machine??).
I'm very disappointed that Lucas has decided it's reasonable to illustrate the Clone Wars as an advertisement for the combat prowess of Jedi. Wars spanning hundreds of thousands of light years should be a little complex.
I'm really, really, really not interested in people mangling variable names and bastardizing other syntax measures towards the goal of producing small source files. The only thing anyone should care about is the compiled output.
Serious coders and great software engineers know better than to emphasize code unreadability for kicks.
Mr. Carmack has stated that the technical side of Doom 3 has not undergone significant change in a long time, and that it's mostly content issues that were left to work out (by now, even these may be over with).
Yes, this comment is amusing and all that. However, it's not really correct. Benchmarks have already been done on versions of Doom 3 that are technologically about the same as what'll be released, and the more recent revisions of cards have all done quite well. After all, Doom 3's tech was designed with a Geforce 3 in mind.
I hate to be the one to point out this glaring issue, but in Morrowind, holding the mouse button longer accomplishes NOTHING except making your finger tired.
Phew, I hope you're happy. I really wore my fingers out with this one.
Keep your stuff patched, because you never know where, when, how or by whom the next attack is going to come from.
For people whose livelihood doesn't directly involve keeping said stuff patched, or people whose aspirations in life aren't affixed solely to notions of uptime, this is easier said than done.
I'm sick and tired of people claiming that patching their system's software is a negligible task.
I'm also tired of people saying "I'm sick and tired of [insert unspeakably minor issue here]", but that's a whole other story.
To say nothing of taking the diet advice of a guy who died from heart disease.
Anyway, to anyone who happens to read this, just another warning. Eating properly is important, but this includes eating enough. Starving yourself while maintaining a rigorous exercise routine is asking for trouble (i.e. a weakened immune system, if not outright injury). And I doubt you can ever go wrong by drinking lots of water!
Wow. A completely unnecessary condescending remark.

I actually don't think id software is known to be in the habit of lying about release dates, once they put out a final statement.

They're not interested in your value.
Yes, it's more than nothing, but is it worth the cessation of corporate philanthropy? Probably not. To me, it sounds like a weak excuse.
... that most people don't really DO anything.
Just out of curiosity, did this "missive from some schoolchildren" seem at all like a silly rouse? That would be my first guess.

Remind me to stand in the opposite direction of Japan, since you appear to be jizzing all over it.

Sounds like somebody needs to watch his diet a little more closely, and maybe hit the gym once in awhile!
