Nah, he's just cheap. Somehow I doubt his laptop is as old as mine (6 years), and yet mine does everything I need, including A/V encoding/transcoding. Does get a bit warm, though.
The best part about it is that I don't have to worry about the Genuine Microsoft (or whatever it's called) that pops up occasionally on my wife's computer. Hell, my sister rebuilt her system with my Snow Leopard disc no problem (she only had Leopard). But Apple is so draconian in whatever random thing someone wants to whine about, most of which no one really cares about.
Oh, they'll just bitch that it costs money, and every little thing that every single thing for every single person in the world should be done "their way." How many things could be brought up about Windows and Linux? Oh, wait, this is/.
Talk about a huge PR move if they did that. Their margins would go way down, though. And then unions would get involved, etc. More downside than upside, even with rip-off stores.
Depends on which wired communications we are talking about. For TV, the area is Comcast only, no FiOS yet (if ever). There is satellite TV, but it's technically wired. For high speed internet, again only Comcast. Sure, there are some (I think) dial-ups, but really? Wired phone has all kinds of options, including Comcast.
The problem I have being tied to Comcast is it knows it can raise prices whenever it wants, because how many people would really drop TV and high speed internet? I don't know if satellite TV has gotten around to providing local channels yet, which tends to be the deal breaker. And then there is the whole Net Neutrality issue.
But I don't dismiss the whole "hey, time for some 'campaign contributions' " angle.
Perhaps I was not clear enough. At least for what I was talking about, for common problems Windows will flash something at you saying "Push button to fix." As opposed to here on/. where someone will post a 15 step to fixing whatever it is. I'm not talking about the hard stuff, but the stuff where my wife asks me "Is it OK to push 'Yes'?"

I tried upgrading my microwave with the "Toaster Implant Upgrade," but it kinda of blew up. I think it was manufacturer compatibility issues.
