"Not once you add the price for the accessories you'll need for the iPad 2 (e.g. funky proprietary connector to HDMI, etc.) When you're done you're within spitting distance. The price difference between the devices reflects what the manufacturers have decided to include."

How many of the millions of people want these funky connectors, though? I'm sure some fraction do, but even I don't really care as I have other, more capable, devices to connect to HDMI devices. I suppose there are a number of people who may try to use a tablet as an all-in-one device, but I would think that those people would be in the minority.

This I did not know. I figured they would at least come from different companies. Gotta agree with the servicing bit- I had a fan go bad, and the Apple techs decided that I needed a complete overhaul. And they won't do just the fan, once they decide that it needs full service, it's all or none. So the support guy told me to just have it shipped back to me and go to an authorized dealer to have it fixed. Way to go Apple, you're pissing me off and I'm a fairly big Apple backer. I guess I should have worded it better. It's a 1st gen of a new evolution. It seems like every time Apple upgrades/revamps a product the first ones out the door have problems. My own Macbook had the power unit, graphics card, and something else (been a while) replaced with the first 3 months, It was the new 2008 model. Shoddy? Yes. Normal (for Apple)? Yes. Acceptable? No.

For sure, the 'device' market will always be a race. The iPhone has only a fraction of the total smart market, but name recognition is iPhone, Blackberry, and Android is coming up quick.

I don't even know who the iPod competitors are.

iPad could end up having a fraction of the tablet market, but if it's a big market, and it's the only (or 1 of 2 or 3), names, then I think Apple will be happy.

I've already seen iPads on TV shows (believe it or not; I was kinda floored). I'm not saying the competitors will be bad, or overall not overtake total share. It's that marketing thing that Apple does so well. (I have no personal use for it, but I'm waiting for some fun commercials for it. Maybe a monkey using an iPad. That would be cool.)

I see your point in my poor definition of what I perceive as the potential problem. The point I was trying to make was unauthorized access to data, where the user does not even know the data is being accessed. Before you get yippity again, if there is no 3rd party overview of app software, how do you know that that app is not going to steal all of your data and send it back somewhere?

This was not a code issue, nor an app asking for access issue. It was an issue about non-authorized, non-asking access to data. [I could make some snarky remark asking you if you ever installed LimeWire (or whatever) and had your computer compromised.]
