Ok, this has no direct connection with Iraq, but I think the comparison is between Pearl Harbor and the WTC. The problem being is that their is no single country we can go after for WTC, where as Pearl Harbor we knew who to go after.

I don't know the real answer (who can, really- it's so complex), but I always think "What if we do nothing and we get nuked?"

Now to counter that, I want to say that I don't want to go to war, just maybe use a more forceful inspection process, say the military. They go in, and if anyone says "no, you can't go here" we say "yeah, we are" and shoot if they get in the way. No bombings or missiles or tanks, just a presence that won't take "no".

Just FYI- I'm a DoD contractor, and there is a good chance I may have to inhabit the Persian Gulf area to support some of the systems we are developing (talk about a real-life test!), so believe me, I'm REALLY not wanting a war situation!

Interesting- most bombs are 500 to 2000 lbs, usually. Around the same as a crushed car, right? Use crushed cars, and use a C-130 (that's the big transport plane, right?) and you could drop around 70k lbs of (non-explosive) materials. I think B-52s are limited to around 50k lbs (probably wrong, don't crawl up my ass about the number). So if you only drop kinetic bombs, you got nearly a 50% increase! Incorporate some kind of high explosive, and viola! bombs froms wrecks!

Of course, you lose the "dropping Buicks!" angle, but you do get (without the high explosive additives) "HOLY SHIT- They're dropping blocks of... what the fuck is that!"

This may be true in general, but we had a support contract where everything was covered for 3 years. (We are big enough that we negotiate contracts independent of the standard warrantees). We had a bunch of 600 and 600e's at work, and one by one the batteries died. We had a 3 year warrantee deal, and it was ok for about 2-2.5 years. Then, they stop honoring dead batteries! I don't know if our tech help didn't protest or tell the right people in our company, but I was told "IBM won't honor the warrantee, your group or you personally will have to buy a new battery". Just out and out said, too bad. WTF! Since I was the last one to have such an old laptop, no one really cared to raise a stink about it.

We generally get good service from IBM, but the techs said that IBM was blowing off these batteries because they all started dying after 1.5-2.5 years, and they figured they ALL were going to go bad.

This sounds like the car manufacturer beancounter stories- how much to fix all the problems vs. how much in potential lawsuits. And how many people are going to press a lawsuit for a $100-$200 battery?

The worst part is the battery is dead, the hard drive is physically failing, it's slow as molasses, but since it still works I can't get an upgrade! How many seconds in a microwave....?
