  1. Re:Except that some of these are already dead on Disruptive Technologies For Next 5 Years · · Score: 2

Actually, I'm currently working with a guy who supervised the running of fiber around DC. This was still pretty new, so his lead engineer said just bundle it with the 375k(357k?, I forget) line (the big towers). He asked, what happens if we get a lightning strike? "Ah, donno." So he made them run separated orange tubing (a good foot separation from any other conductor) with fiber inside so it wouldn't suffer arcing damage.

So running fiber around high voltage is not crazy, as long as you plan it before-hand.

One question, though- what would the mass be if the sun just happened to intersect that pipe from the earth to Centauri? (hint, joke)

  14. Armegedon is upon us on Farscape to Return? Is Sci-Fi Channel Redeemed? · · Score: 3, Insightful

The commercial for "Tremors: The Series" looks like a cross between the 1st Tremors movie and the "Dukes of Hazzard". The Dream thingy commercial is a bunch of women talking about how they have lesbian dreams. Stargate and Farscape seem ok, so far.

Overall, though, Sci-Fi is really turning into Shit-Fi. I didn't mind the horror movies as much as everyone else, since I like horror movies, this past Tuesday I stayed home 'cause I was sick, and all that was on Sci-Fi was 1 mystery and 2 thrillers, with only a minor sci-fi tie in.

Long have the days of petitioning Sci-Fi to re-up Bab5 or Crusade gone past.

    So sad.

  16. Biases, arguments, and fights... on Mac vs. PC: Digital Video Editing Comparison · · Score: 0, Flamebait

At one point, it was Linux vs. Windows. Viscious(sp?) fights between the 2. Both sides made fun of Macs.

"Everyone is used to Windows." "Linux is better but everyone is used to Windows, and everyone needs to use Office."

OS X comes out... and now the *nix people are kinda ok with OS X (not quite as good, but hey, it's pretty neat), but the Windows people are in total "Macs suck no matter what" mode. "Not only do they use slower CPUs, they also use inferior plasitics in their cases!" "And they smell funny, like wet emus!" No mention that the Macs still can do Office.

Now in this article we have people saying the only reason that graphics/publication people are "still" using Macs are because they are "used to them, and everyone is used to xxx (I don't know what the top pubishing packages are)." Ok, so it's ok that everyone uses Office, but in the pub industry using xxx is bad, somehow?

Are we seeing some hypocrosy here?
