Wait until Microsoft actually publishes what they plan to implement in Longhorn, rather than what some analysts predict the plan is...
Will due respect (perhaps) to the analysts, the article reads more like a cute marketing ploy or extreme FUD: haven't Microsoft brought out enough drivel in those areas to warrant even more coming from unofficial/non-connected sources? I mean, please, when people are quoted as saying "Neither Linux nor Unix ties the operating system to hardware,...This could bring [for Windows] a higher level of security than anything we've ever seen. It will almost completely prevent the platform from being compromised." then exactly how much respect does the article warrant? Not only are the quotes lacking in true factual content, but the majority is damn right humourous (in the groaning sense)!
[Disclaimer: I'm ranting at the article and its content, not the fact that it was submitted to/.]
Got a Psion Revo a few years back with the intention of using it to dial up to work and perform basic tasks via telnet, check email etc. Since my mobile phone company (Orange) decided to charge for 0800 data calls, that soon went out the window (my company wouldn't reimburse the calls). So I *tried* every-so-hard to use it for PDA-type stuff - Agenda, Jotter for notetaking, Word for meeting minutes/complaint letters etc. However, it's difficult to do those sort of things when you simply don't have the full, go-getting lifestyle required for such tasks. Yes, nowadays I use the Agenda to remind me to get a haircut, buy a birthday present, tax the car etc but it basically boils down to a glorified alarm clock. (Which, I'd like to add, it does rather well - I'm one of those people who needs a good kicking in the morning to get up, and the Psion dutifully does that with its "gets louder the longer you leave them" alarams.)
Best 200 quid alarm I ever bought.
And I think that's the problem: some of us buy such items simply because we like gadgets and we never learn that we don't actually need one.
[Trouble is, I want a Zaurus, but just know that I'd never use it and thus feeling guilty for having one.]
Don't you mean MS/GNU/Linux? Or GNU/Microsoft/Linux or....
You get the idea.
If it were to come about, it would the most (or should that be "only"?) schizophrenic OS out there - constantly battling with itself to be free (as in speech) and closed at the same time. Perhaps they could reincarnate Bob as some little clippy that tries to both help and screw with with. Oh no wait, I believe the standard Clippy already does that...
I find that odd, saying how UNIX was a joy and VMS brings nightmares. Perhaps it's because I went the other way round (of sorts) in terms of experience: Amiga -> UNIX -> VMS.
Whilst I use and prefer UNIX/Linux, I appreciate that VMS isn't a bad OS at all. But perhaps it's simply because the first time I did a 'sh log' on an Alpha at work (which we have only recently switched off after 10+ years of use) a smile can across my face as it took me back to the good ol' 'assign' of my beloved Miggy;-)
Well, I know of one "muscle" (ah-hem) that can be exercised whilst keep your wrist in pretty good shape at the same time!!!
All from the comfort of your home as well.
Oh dear.
[Apologies to the female audience for this]
Less child humoured reply: One strangely obvious option may be to get a cycling machine which can be adjusted low enough so that you can double it up as a computer chair - hacking and exercise at the same time!
[P.S. I've not seen much of BB, but what I have seen of it is 5 minutes of a red door, and 5 minutes of Jade. The former was far more interesting (and probably a damn-sight more intelligent).]
you'll also know that you're colour blind when you eventually realise that your local publican has already figured this out and has been short-changing you for the past 6 months.
This is especially bad for those of us who suffer from colour-blindness, dyslexia, anddyscalculia.
"are there any pets out there that are especially conducive to a nerdish personality/lifestyle?..."
A sheep. Not only a pet, but a friend, a sexual partner, a personal clothing factory, and a small butchers all rolled into one.You need never see a human being ever again!
"in turn they seemed more willing to listen to reason and help form a project timeline that was 1/2-way based on reality." ... ... "suffering from being up to late working on a project:-("
Sounds like you might need to butter up your Project Manager a bit more...
This isn't going to help (actually it will - don't ask this for obvious HR reasons...) but in one interview I got asked:
Interviewer: "Have you got a girlfriend?"
Me: No.
Interviewer: "Have you got a boyfriend?
Me: No (and was tempted to ask him the same question).
Mind you, [more] mind games were in play. I was asked to devise a solution to a problem but the interviewer then told me that I was completely wrong and that I should have done it another way. The aim was to see if I would a) not just cave in and just agree that his method was better and b) reasonably explain why I did it the way that I did.
When I used BTInternet as an ISP, the service was appalling - random disconnections, loss of DNS, loss of routing, disgraceful customer support. Yes, I know that BTInternet (now BTOpenworld) is meant to be separate from BT itself - which BTi loved to point out when things went wrong (often) and came back with the ever-original "Oh, we can't do anything - we have to wait for BT to do x." - but since BTi use the BT brand name as an advertising leverage I have no respect for either.
Mind you: I'm also biased as I come from Hull where they have a real telecoms operator...

The OP said: I don't mean to nitpick...
;-)
Sorry, but I do: it's the 'X Window System', or 'X', or 'X11'.
I'll refrain from making a comment about your nick. Oopps, sorry - looks like I have!
For some reason, the following (stupid) idea popped straight into my head when I read the post:
Cover yourself with the Halloween docs and go rampaging forth through the streets...
Sometimes I amaze even myself at my level of sadness.
Commodore Billboard has an archive of Amiga Ads in mpg and avi formats.
I find that odd, saying how UNIX was a joy and VMS brings nightmares. Perhaps it's because I went the other way round (of sorts) in terms of experience: Amiga -> UNIX -> VMS.

Can't we just send her up there regardless?

"No, goat sacrifices are for stable running of Windows"
Microsoft must have run out of goats a pretty long time ago then...

On a side note, why is it spelled BESTiality? I just looked it up on dictionary.com, and it seems odd. Isn't the root "beast"?
After a lot of (ah-hem) "research", the best reason I can come up with is that it stems from the Latin for "beast" which is "bestia".

Well, you did ask...
Don't forget AOLers...
Paula2003432
Gary228 (obviously one of the more lucky ones)
etc., etc.
I'm wondering who'd dare call their child CowboyNeal?

Are the Koreans legally obliged to donate them *with* the Nimda since it would "go a long way to help an organization get that computer into use with minimal expended resources."
It sure would help the receiver to get the computer into use: use into sending out viruses...
Agreed.
AOL uses ntl's network for its FRIACO service.
My ISP, PlusNet believes that it won't be directly affected as it uses Level 3 and Sprint as backbone providers.
Just think of how many fines you'd get if you frequently used the train.
Well, provided it's not a British Rail train, that it is...
who knew I would give up so much when I got married?
The wife...
Nah, that'll be in the Show Hall of Inept Technology festival next door...
Which are invariably themselves...
Someone mod parent up (I haven't got any mod points today...)
As Fly says: it doesn't mean the end - Chapter 11 is merely a means of protection and doesn't actually mean that the company's dead.

I got the job & for some reason took it...
[And if you hadn't guessed, I'm male.]
O.K. How about these:
BT "Sometimes"
BT rewrites T&Cs to kick off users
BT degradates service for heavy users
When I used BTInternet as an ISP, the service was appalling - random disconnections, loss of DNS, loss of routing, disgraceful customer support.
Yes, I know that BTInternet (now BTOpenworld) is meant to be separate from BT itself - which BTi loved to point out when things went wrong (often) and came back with the ever-original "Oh, we can't do anything - we have to wait for BT to do x." - but since BTi use the BT brand name as an advertising leverage I have no respect for either.
