  1. Re:Copyright vs. Copyleft on RIAA Warns Individual Swappers · · Score: 1

    It's all about money.

The average /.er thinks that big ass companies who have shitloads of money should abide by the law and that a lone individual who may even be unemployed should be allowed to break it.

People who rip off music, films, books, games etc. over p2p are taking away a tiny bit of potential profit from huge corporations with lots of money, whereas riaa suing some dude takes a large amount of money away from somebody who doesn't have much.

The slashdot mentality is that the seriousness of the crime is directly proportional to the percentage of a person's worth that the crime affects.

    I agree.

    I totally agree.

I have an 18-year-old daughter and trying to protect her from the cuss-words on TV, video and DVD is a neverending nightmare!

How can film-makers be so irresponsible as to include words like d*mn, a** and b*tt in their movies?

Luckily I discovered a solution, and I hope it helps other slashdot readers too.

At www.perspexkids.com you will find a really friendly, home-run company who can encase your children in perspex, thus not only preventing them from picking up cuss-words from TV, but also protecting them against persecution on the basis of religion and injury by mean-minded little kids with plastic cutlery.

    From their faq:

Q: If I encase my kid in perspex, won't he/she die?

A: Probably. But wouldn't you rather your child was with Baby Jesus in Heaven than exposed to all the negative influences of today's society?

  22. Even with replication... on Lessig And RIAA Answer NewsHour Questions · · Score: 1

Even with replication of physical objects being possible, there is still an apportunity for profit by companies that make physical things.

For example what could happen is that all devices could come with something that wirelessly tapped into the internet and broadcast a unique key (unique to each copy of for example a food blender).

Now I can borrow your food blender and copy it, or download the data from the internet, but because I haven't got a unique key, I'm out of luck.

Then of course you will get people developing keygens for food blenders, and when that stops working they will just disassemble the food blender, hack out the controlling key parts, and put the design back on the p2p networks.

(Heh, can you imagine it: "I downloaded a food processor from the internet and there was a turd in it!")

Anyway, this is how, even with freely-copyable physical objects, companies can still make money. Of course people would find ways round it, but last I heard the RIAA and MPAA are still making lots of money...
