  1. but wait - it gets worse! on Cable Co's Want More Control Over Your Network · · Score: 1

I don't understand how this works - for one thing last I saw you cannot forward a mac address. There's not a router in the world that can do this. Of course those linksys "routers" are pretty open gateways to peoples networks - its still a lot of guess work - for instance you might be able to probe far enough and find machines beyond the cable network, but how do you prove they are accessing the internet?

How else do they detect nat routers? I'm running my little SS10 under kernel 2.4.14 - it was easier to detect 2.2.x doing masq stuff, but how you detect 2.4.x is beyond me.

Also - and this is the big point I think was missed - I had a friend that broken down and bought an extra IP - the extra IP was on a different subnet - as far as I could tell to route back to the machine sitting next to it - it had to go out over the cable router - out to the gateway and back to the machine - just to play network games against each other. As I recall it had about a 50 ms ping... So in some ways your wasting even more bandwidth the way these people allocate ip's.

  4. Re:Why Sun? on Building a Better Webserver · · Score: 2, Interesting

I use two sun's at home - one is a SS10 (my firewall running 2.4.14) and the other is a SS20 (my file/web/webcam server) - it does samba, nfs and ftp for files - and it has a videopix digitizer for webcam stuff.

Why did I chose sparc? Well its a tad quieter then a X86 box, smaller, and (and this is the point) it uses up a lot less power. The SS10 ships with a 65 watt ps (at least mine did). Considering you can get these things for less then 25~65 dollars they are a bargain (I paid 25$ for the SS10 and 65$ for the SS20). Anyhoo I kept my SS10 running for 30 minutes on a 300 va ups when the power went out last week - I doubt its drawing more then 25 watts peak. The software is still free since it runs debian linux well (and you can get sloaris for it too for free)

Plus - I have the added advantage that for some reason sun equipment is like a geek's dream - they look kinda cool sitting on the table next to the cable connection. Everyone who has ever come by has to comment on them somehow - either "whats that" - or "wow - you have one of those?". Don't get me wrong - there slow, (the SS10 has a cacheless microsparc in it), but the SS10 seems to keep up with the 4 megabit cable connection okay.

First - this was a rumor - I have a dreamcast that was just purchased in the store the other day - in the black and red box (with the sports scene on it) - boots CDR's just fine. I don't know where it came from, but I have YET TO SEE a DC that can't boot cdr's and I've picked up like 4 of these for friends and family.

Second you can boot a DC off a CD and then bootstrap it off a NFS server (or whatever) - I've got this kind of setup at home - so in essence the cdr is just a bootstrap medium. Of course it helps to have a cross compiler for SH4 - but that seems to be more effort then the average slashdotter is in to.

Because if you read it...really read it... it kind of says (to me) Yeah the Xerox parc -> Apple -> Microsoft interface argument may be convoluted and pointless, but *multimedia/video for the computing masses started with Apple*.

But it didn't - I was there - I was doing video effects (real time non linear and otherwise) while mac people were still fooling around with desktop publishing- I was using a Commodore Amiga. It happened - and yes history should recognize that (even if its a foot-note). Besides I think CDXL pre-dates quicktime - CDXL being the digital video format for the CDTV optimized for cd-rom access.

Historians like cringely can't resist doing this though - and I suppose it keeps the industry interesting. I think there is a point to be made - if it weren't for the popularity of windows/dos there wouldn't be clones. I'm sure linus (and others) would say it was a lot easier to develope Linux on a open well known platform like the PC/AT then say a Mac or an SGI.

But in the game you'll notice something I've never seen in a game console before - bump mapping - and no as far as I know the PS2 nor the GC can do bump mapping at least for free (with little overhead).
