The thing is that 40% faster processor is going to be $500 tops. If you're processor limited, it's going to be a better value to upgrade the cpu.

Physics and AI are all done on the CPU and they are taking more and more a toll these days. At the end of the day, if a new cpu is going to give me more frames per second, than its going to have value.

    Wow, mod this up.

Perrin Kaplan has said essentially the same thing. They've announce the name now to let people get over it, in addition to getting a hell of a lot of publicity.

Then when May 9th rolls around, and the pre-E3 press release hits, they'll have more interesting news to start the cycle all over again.

But expect them to keep holding back until 6 weeks or so before the console launches. Even without Yamauchi, Nintendo will always be extremely conservative with it's cards.

What if you used a multi-core system (probably an AMDX2) and streamed the output via gigabit LAN?

Since you're not writing to HD you would just need a bunch of RAM to store frames while it gets streamed. Then you can use another system in a striped RAID-0 configuration to store the output quickly.

My other vote would go towards a frame-by-frame rendering situation. 1280x1024 is small potatoes for current graphics hardware. The resulting video won't be something you can't get in realtime.

Sony could actually surprise people. After they lost the portable music market to Apple's iPod, they've loosend the reignes a little with the DRM-fest they're known for.

It's the homebrew scene (but more specifically pirating) that put Xbox sales over Gamecube in the US. Many of those consoles sold never even saw a legitamate game in it's drive.

Ofcourse MS never saw any profits from this but I do believe it's what drove hardware sales.

Thanks for pointing this out. If it's competition from AMD that's driven prices down, than it's reason to buy an Intel not AMD.

Prices for Conroe have been quoted by Intel a little bit. I believe what has been stated is that the top of the line Conroe proc, which is estimated to be about 20% faster on average than an over-clocked AMD 4000+, is actually going to be cheaper.

Must be a result of INtel's large manufacturing quantities. AMD's prices will more than likely go down some as their production capacity goes up.

However there are larger trends that will heavily reduce the cost of electronics manufacturing. In 2015, silicon runs out of steam. By this time the industry has already been ramping up nanotechnology and practicle molecular comptuting is in sight. In 2020, nanotechnology will be fully mature and immensely cheap.

So for this kind of proposed computing, a cost in the cents is entirely concievable.

I agree. Sony needs to offer a larger feature set if they expect consumers to pay $500+. PS3 needs to be seen as a substitute in the PC market to get away with those prices. Most people will not be comfortable spending that much money on something that is useful for leisure only. It needs to be downright useful.

This is why it's smart that they include a linux distro with the console - to enable web browsing and email access.

What else could the PS3 do that will make it more useful than a games condole?

    Damn, quite the post.

Okay, I here you about the kiddie stuff, and some excellent features on 360. And the emulation. But here's thing - you're the minority.

Things like cute characters make the game more approachable to everyone, not the small demographic that you are a part of. I appreciate that I can get my girl friend to play a round of mario kart with me. She's not going to enjoy GRAW, and not many other people besides a very small minority of the population do either.

Most people dont have time to invest hours a day into gaming. A lot of these game require an extremely high amount of dedication. Those games can be fun, and you should play them as much as you can if that is what you enjoy and have time for. But the majority of people would prefer to play in short intetervals.

Concerning emualtion, again, mmost people aren't aware of how to download an emulator and hook up a controller to their computer. Also most people dont want to play a console game on their computer. The living room would be more suitable.

I agree with you about the innovation thing. Nintendo hasn't done anything lately that is remotely innovative. They really need to get off their haunches and do something disruptive I think.

So while everyone of your points are completely valid when it comes time to decide how to invest your money, the resoning behind that decision isn't widley supported. Nintendo is making games more approachable and is really giving it back to the people.
