    Some people like to open their machines and fiddle with them, adding their own RAM, installing larger harddrives, overclocking the CPU, etc.

    They're called"hardware hackers".

    Sometimes, it's done simply to save a little money. Sometimes it's done for the fun of messing around with the hardware.

    As the folks from MAKE magazine say, "If you can't open it, you don't own it!"

    What the hell are you talking about? The 6400 had an easily removed backpanel, revealing a slide out logic board. Installing or removing PCI cards, adding RAM or a processor upgrade was simplicity itself.

    It is only slightly more difficult to get the front panel off, accessing the main hard drive, optical drive, ZIP drive (tossed and replaced by another hard drive) and an empty bay for a SCSI drive.

    At no point did I imply that car theft was "good for the econonmy", just it doesn't materially or financially adversely affect the car company that made/sold the stolen car.

    DO try to read what I wrote, and not infer that which is not there.

    The automobile company suffers no injury nor financial loss whatsoever from the theft of the car.

    They have already been paid in full via the loan taken out tourchase the car.

    Yes, there is inconvenience and loss for the car owner.

    But the auto company really doesn't care a fat rat's ass what happens to that particular car. They have their money, they have recouped their expense.

    Thus, your "broken window" example is refuted.

    The automobile company has lost zero money. That stolen car was already purchased FROM the company. They have the money.

    Indeed, car theft is GOOD for car companies. Obviously, the person who has had his car stolen (and not recovered) is going to need another car, which will likely be purchased for him by his insurance company.

    If the car IS recovered, theft is still good for the car company. In most instances, there is some significant damages done to the car in the act of stealing it. Replacements parts must be bought.

    Exactly. It's no big deal for me to run Mac OS under a user account, and switch to root when I need to. Mainly for Software Update and when I'm installing something that needs the admin password.

    (To be honest, half the time, I don't know if I'm root or not. OK, right now, not root.)

    Should be the same with Linux. One doesn't need root to play a game or send email or play a video or anything else that takes up 90+% of the CPU cycles.

    If any Windows software requires that it be run as root, then yes, stupid Windows and doubly stupid Windows software developers.

    If any Mac OS software requires that it be run as root (save for installation), well, GODDAMN STUPID Mac OS and quadruply Mac OS developers!

    And yet, my Mac OS X install comes from the factory with all the security features turned on by default.

    In my twenty some years of Mac OS usage, I have run into exactly ONE virus, on a used Color Classic I bought. A quick application of the freeware Disinfectant took care of that.

    If you want to spend all that time, securing your Windows installs, go right ahead.

    As long as MS continues to ship a product that, essentially, lies there, it's legs in the air, it's underwear nowhere to be seen, and loudly demanding:

    "RAPE ME! RAPE ME RIGHT NOW, GODDAMMIT!"

    You're going to be spending a lot of time tweaking your Windows installs.

    Me, I prefer to click "Install", come back 30 minutes later, click a few more times and have a BY DEFAULT secure OS ready and waiting.

    YMMV.
