I am not much into that scene, only as the ocassional user, I am sure that if your experiences are pertinent they can put a page with your findings. Or if you have your own website just put it there and Google will do the rest.
It would be a pity that such effort is not shared thus forcing less proficient people like me to reinvent the wheel;-)
So many people that are completely unable to understand that a conviction in these conditions is only comparable to convictions in China, Saudi Arabia or Cuba, a situation that has rightly been denounced for years, but now that the US does the same there are many that are willing to have an hypocratical double standard regarding this matter.
I'll never get tired of saying this: the truly democratic and fair nature of a society is only measured by how this society treats people that by most accounts such society finds distasteful or dangerous.
The US standards have lowered to the level of many repressive regimes, if that is the way you want to fight terrorism, good for you, just pray that nobody ever has a grudge against you and goes and denounces you to the authorites (as used to happen in former Soviet block countries).
Linux is not remotely capable (yet, but maybe never) of the amount of escalation provided by Solaris. On top of that the close cupling of hardware and software by the same company provides many advantages that Linux can't provide.
At least for the forseable future in the medium and high end of the server market there is no chance that the UNIXes around will be dropped.
I am posting this from Mozilla running in a Gnome desktop in Soalris 2.8. Mozilla just became officially supported and I am sure will be Solaris' browser in future realeases. I don't know the exact situation of Gnome but I guess it is similar.
I routinely use Perl, I have a little Apache server to keep a couple of small Web apps.
Sun has been offering for some time now a set of GNU tools fro Solaris.
So baring the kernel (that as has been said before on this thread) which is substantially better in Solaris, you can just feel at home in Solaris if you are a Linux user, most of the tools you normally use are already included or are easily obtainable directly from Sun.
1.- Solaris is free for one processor machines (most x86 on which Linux runs as a server).
2.- Sun is promoting, although shyly, Linux machines on x86 architecture. They would also lose time and money with their Linux offerings in the completely unlikely case in which Linux becomes unvaiable.
Surely Sun's jump at the opportunity to bash AIX was comnpletely despicable, a lot of the goodwill I have for them was severely dented by that attitude, but that is a far cry from bashing them as the main conspirators in this sorry matter.
How do you know? Users have been locked out by MS of having any choice at all when deciding which software to use.
By bundling everything but the kitchen sink in the OS (give me a fsking break, since when a web browser is fundamental to the fcuntioning of an OS???) MS is killing the computer industry by stiffling and scaring innovation.
Not happy with that, they use gangster tactics by sending their hitters of the BSA to audit your company for copyright violations when it very well can be that you are fully in the clean.
And warned does not mean small text in a lose paper inside the box in which the TV is packaged. Warned should be a big label in red letters with "WARNING" in capital letters in the top of the box and the legal responsibitlity of the seller explaining this.
You are deciding that because a company provided bad service to you then it is OK if they are brought down by one of the IP protection rackets that are becomming the more profitable, less productive "businesses" in the history of mankind.
Bad service a by a company that actually implemented something is bad. Broken patent law, judges and juries without a clue, and goverments intent in making things even worse are patently an uglier option.
In Colombia very often the drug barons, that make a fortune out of the misery of many other people, regularly give to good causes in their towns of origin: public services, schools, even help building the local church.
Not surprisingly the locals normally love these criminals and more often than not are willing to do anything (and here I mean anything) in favour of their patrons.
Draw your own analogies, it is not difficult (keep a sense of proportion, there are degrees of black here), but to say that somebody does not behave like a truly bastard in one field because he behaves like a saint in another is absolutely naive, childish and frankly stupid.
Sweeping generalizations about sensitive issues are a diservice.
I have never taken drugs and don't wish to be associated with that "culture", nevertheless I would defend the right of anybody to wreck their own life with harmful substances if so they wish.
Because then I will find more hardware (not that I miss anything), more support (not that I need any) and more applications (I miss nothing at the moment).
And because in such situation big companie would be forced to provide a better product and service, treating us like valuable clients and not like possible copyright infringers.
... could get them one coder for one year, full time or 2 for 6 months, or something like that.
I am sure many coders don't code because they have to choose between altruism and paying the bills.
Perhaps it is time to realize that freedom does not come cheap and we have to pay for it.
... you have bigger problems than copyright issues.
A fake democracy or perfect dictatorship comes to my mind.
How did that ever cross the mind of anybody is abolutely beyond me.
There are really some stupid people out there.
Or TVs, or DV players, radios with alarms, etc.
What a fscking great idea!
You can have computers now adays for as little as 200 US$. New.
Or buy a second hand one 2 or 3 years old (that is not old, and most probably is neither unreliable).
Get you head out of your coding a@@ please....
... no user will be pushing the damn CD button.
Ever.

Chhers.

Haven't you been long here sonny?
Mention one company sued by SCO for using Linux.

This is up to a degree already happening.

Users like one-stop shopping
Really?

Unless you know something we don't. there is no proof so far thst such code exists.
There are a lot of people with Toshiba Librettos out there, a system like this would be ideal for such machines.
Please if you do something and want to share it don't dismiss it as no useful unless you have checked around!

What is the Linux community doing appart from whining?
I am sick tired of some people equatting Sun with MS.
Sun has contributed to OSS, they were perhaps the first UNIX company to move towards providing FLOSS software to their users.
So tell us, enlighten us, what has Sun done against FLOSS apart to try to compete fairly or use it to enhance its own products?
The rules were clear, nobody forced these guys to participate.
Sweeping generalizations about sensitive issues are a diservice.

I wanr Linux in as many computers as possible.
Why?
