  1. Irrational like Pi on The First Steps Towards Asimov's Psychohistory? · · Score: 0

Pi is an irrational number and women are just like Pi. You can spend your entire life analyzing and figuring things (the last decimal)but you will never get to the end.
Just accept the fact that they are all crazy. Knowing this, you should be happy if you can find one that's LESS insane than others.

    Holly says:
"Well, the thing about a Black Hole, its main distinguishing feature, is it's black! And the thing about space, the colour of space, yer basic space colour, is it's Black! So how are you supposed to see them."

(why should their other locations be any more secure?) Hopefully, one of their nerdier admins is reading this :)
As far as Starbucks is concerned, I don't know. Keep tipping their hot, young (female) baristas to get free coffee :)

  4. When are these temps going to shut the hell up? on Microsoft Caste System · · Score: 0

Seriously, these MS temps ruined it for other 99% of consultants out there. As soon as that lawsuit started most organizations got rid of their consultants or made them employees of big companies that set up shop there. So,(for most of us) for doing the same work now you are getting less money than before, have to put up with consulting company's BS and STILL be treated like crap by the real (blue badge) employees. Oh, and be ready to be cycled out of the company in a year. Those bastards just got greedy. It's your own fault if the consulting company is ripping more than 20% of the billing rate, which is usually related to consultant's status in this country(H-1B), experience and most importantly - negotiating skills.
If was really that bad, they would not be working there.

  5. Guess who leaked the code? MS on Windows Key Leak Threatens Mass Piracy · · Score: 0

It would make total sense. They don't care about catching pirates and crackers because those will always find a way around it. I suspect they WANT people to steal the software and upgrade their systems and servers. Medium and small businesses would be their target - once you upgrade to Active Directory it's kind of hard to roll back. Ad of course Microsoft is going to put an activation feature in that will break your server that's using this stolen serial. The only way to fix it is to activate it with MS aka cough up the money. 10 grand here, 20 grand there and soon you start talking real money. Large organizations are not their target because they have corporate licenses that cover user accounts, exchange licenses, ms office, etc. My company ends up paying twice for the OS on newer machines - they come with a valid real OEM serial from Microsoft and then microsoft gets us again when they do licenses for the entire org.

  6. Simpsons did it! Simpsons did! [south park ref] on A New Spin On Physical Phenomena · · Score: 0

It's just bad physics, like that Simpsons episode where Lisa tells Bart that water in toilets spins the other way in the southern hemisphere due to the coriolis effect. Even though the coriolis effect is a verified fact it doesn't really work for something small, like a pipe or toilet. Geometry of the installation and original water flow has more to do with it than anything else. They are comparing apples to oranges. Here a decent book on THEORETICAL physics.

It must be a slow news day at /. when speculative piece of garbage of an article like this makes it in. The comment about cheaper media than CDs makes no sense. CDs are extremely cheap - 20 cents per 700mb is LOW and most people who listen to music on their pcs already have cd burners.
Free this, free that. I want a supermodel to come with my next new car purchase, FREE of charge. They want to sell cars, right? Oh, and I want the Swedish Bikini Team to change my oil every 5k miles. We all can dream :)

  9. port 135 is RPC Endpoint Mapper on Microsoft Refuses To Fix NT 4.0 Exploit · · Score: 0

Port 135 is like a directory that the locator (MS service) uses to find out what services are available and what ports they use. The biggest problem is that DCOM uses this port and a hacker can take advantage of it...if it's left exposed to the outside world. A real firewall is the only solution, since shutting down this port is usually not an option. (MS Exchange, etc. use this port) Only port 80 and ssl should be availble from servers on the other side of DMZ. A firewall won't stop someone from accessing the system if someone plugs in a Linksys wireless router w/o security that leaks outside AND is plugged into the corporate network.

  10. LEGATO on Screenshot History of Windows · · Score: 0

  11. FYI on Cisco to Acquire Linksys · · Score: 0

Most likely Cisco will not port their IOS to run on Linksys hardware. They are buying Linksys because it's cutting into their small and medium business markets. No one in the right mind would spend $500 on a wireless access point from Cisco for home use if the same (and more) features can be had for $80 from Linksys.
Oh by the way, Cisco's SOHO line of routers (700 series, etc) was the gayest line ever - they didn't run a REAL cisco IOS. It was some crippled mutant that didn't share many commands with the enterprise version of routers. The only redeeming feature was that it let me connect to company's access server (also a cisco box) on demand w/o id and password. (profile of my isdn router was stored on the AS5200)

  12. Re:"pre-purchase tryout" is a lie! on Legal Issues Don't Bother American Downloaders · · Score: 0

Libraries are funded by local/state taxes. So books, CDs and video tapes that they make available to the general public are not free. Also, just because someone chooses not to get a library card doesn't mean they don't pay. However, they get major discounts when they order a lot of copies and from the same publisher or distrib. CD stores hike the wholesale price 50% and then wonder why no one is buying $17+tax CDs w/ 2 good songs on it. IMHO a CD should cost $5 or $0.50 per song. Sell it via the net, kiosks at book stores, cafes, airports, supermarkets, etc. I think it's going to happen in 15 or 20 years. At the right price it doesn't pay to steal.

I wouldn't even trust NASA to operate rides at action parks likes Six Flags. The need-to-know basis stinks of military and obviously they have no respect for people. They should have let the crew know - it's the least they could have done. The very same organization plans on sending more craft into space with nuclear fuel cells instead of solar. The odds of one of those blowing up is about 1 in 100. The impact would be worse than Chernobyl and radioactive rain would fall for years. These guys can't even get their calculation straght! Remember the "standard" and metric fiasco where a mars probe was lost? Sure, you can blame Lockheed all you want but it just proves that they don't check their work, don't read manuals and don't communicate well with outside vendors.
Personally, I think US should spend more $ on harnessing solar and ocean energy than sending silly probes into space. ...And if it's the E.T. life that you seek, go to any garbage dump in Jersey - you're bound to find something living/growing that's out of this world!

It will cost you the same or more in the long run. Also, all those patches, downtime, ECMs and dealers are annoying. However, if you are a hacker and just enjoy messing around with technology, get a Dish Network/Echostar receiver and hack away. Now I pay $35 per month for 100 channels and don't have to worry about another ecm hit. I don't care about free PPV since I borrow, rent and buy DVDs. Large steam pipes (like in Bone Collector) are usually used to keep water hot in smaller pipes inside when they need to reach an apartment building few blocks away. Steam is ideal for this since it, unlike water, can be compressed and can be several times hotter than boiling water. There are pressure release valves throughout and if you get zapped while looking for an empty conduit, you will probably die in less then 30 secs. If you survive, you prob won't want to live anyway. Hehe, you worry about pocket change when it comes to lawsuits related to industrial accidents. You should be worrying about the 50% of your taxes that go straight to Pentagon and billions that are being wasted on NYC's Metrocard system. Now that's a real waste.

Yamaha has better sound and a funky remote but if you are going with all Sony stuff, get one of their ES models. I bought a 50-ES (no longer made)receiver for my friend and he loves it. Yamaha set me back $1250. 3. Sony DVP-S7700. Sure, you can buy a crappy player for $150 but it probably won't play Matrix and drive will sound like a cheap 50x cd-rom spinning-up. Component video out is a must in a DVD player if you are getting a Wega. I bought 7000 for $820 few years ago and 7700 is about $550 now. Shop around. 4. Energy Take5 Home Theatre set. If you are going to watcha lot of DVDs, you have to get these. You get 4 identical 100w speakers + 1 center channel. They are small, sound and look good and are MUCH better than overpriced Bose crap. I received these as a gift. They go for $500 and are cheaper if you buy from Canada. 5. Energy ES-8 powered subwoofer. I bought Acoustic Research sub first...it blew up 1 hour after i plugged it in :( Now I have a very expensive coffee/remote stand. ES-8 is around $300 6. Good UPS to protect all this expensive sh*t. 7. Good speaker wire, component video cable and Toslink for digital out. Monster Cable is like Bose - there's better and cheaper stuff out there. Don't attach sub to it. Finally, go to http://www.audioreview.com and read other people's reviews. P.S. You will probably need a new job just to pay for all this junk.
