    What you say is true ONLY in the commercial market. In fact the high degree you have obtained is more likely to get you hired when you are dealing in an environment where X amount of PHDs, X amound of MS degrees are required.

    Nah, most likwely if the server is set up properly, it should only allow you shell-type features only where you have access to anyway. So it would not give you much more power then FTP anyway ;) but this is assuming the admin has the box set up correctly,lol

    the target market for 3g if I am not mistaken is ages 16-30. This is the market of people who not only use the cell phone the most amount of time per day but are also the ones who spend more money on service, hardware,etc. When a new phone comes out that glows when it rings, or allows you to send text messages back and forth or now with 3g, send pictures along with SMS type messages, you better believe there are plenty of people in that age range who are more then willing to spend the $$$ on new "features"...

    they are using the M$ philosophy....
    1>get your product out in as many places as possible....
    2>be the first to indroduce a "new" technoligy then market the hell out of the fact you were the "first"
    3> THEN after step 1 and 2 have been done to the fullest, start patching and fixing flaws in your "product"

    heck is never quite as black and white as that. I am definetly a mold breaker. i was a skater while in HS but at the same time hung out in the popular crowd becuase I played sports year round but was a geek (I started programmnig when I was 8) and I don't know how many times I'd be out Sat out wild house parties drinking but then Sunday afternoon would be working on some code for a new RPG I was making ;) Just keep in mind not all the popular kids were shallow and not all geeks had to compromise their beliefs to fit in.

    actually it was in an article along time ago when xbox was first announced that they wern't even that serious about breaking ground in the console market, this was only to be a stepping stone to get them into the set top entertainment arena

    Unfort the thing that sucks with my company is everyone is either working really long hours or if they are not at work they are married,have kids,etc. So even the other people in my company around my age (mid-late 20s) they don't go out and have fun,only stay in and fall asleep at 9pm or once a mnoth hang out with other couples, so there is really no one in my company to "hang out" with

    Keep in mind 2 things, most of the people buying gamecube are the hardcore nintendo heads. Nintendo relies on his patents (ie-pokemon ,mario bros,etc) and it's very loyal fan base to continue sales. Nintendo reps made it clear they are still marketing the younger crowd,a complete different crowd then xbox and ps2 market towrds,which is why most people don't see gamecube and xbox really competing in alot of way, plus the big selling point this season is gamecube is $100 LESS then the other consoles out. Which in this economy be a big seller to parents along with their kids who will want to upgrade their N64...

    I have a few friends who work at UUNET (a worldcom company) and both companies have been laying off alot of people, and have hiring freezes in most depts. take a look at your current job and job secuirty,esp in this market, and take that into account too.

    Why was he marked off topic? Hes dead right. Jus tlike doing graphic art, MAC is one of the better platforms for doing audio. yes the question raised was about linux and audio but it also brings up another point that maybe he should look at MAC over linux in the case of audio studio usage. At least hes not giving money is m$ ;)

    I'd really hope if you are doing "pro audio" you'd be using something other then JUST Sound Forge anyway. At minimum for a home based computer studio, you'd want to be able to run a good internal or perf. a external "break away box" sound card on linux and have support for a midi sequencer like cake walk, logic, cubase,etc, plus any other programs like acid, reason,etc. Though not to down play sound forge, I use it all the time for sound editing in my home studio but you'd want alot mreo then that. i think finding the drivers to support a _GOOD_ sound card would be the hard part, I beleive WINE would work with most of the low to mid level audio packages made for windows now a days.

    The reason why everyone screams lawsuit is much of the code developed in the open source community is copyrighted for a reason. Copyright dosn;t mean the code can't be used, it just means the owner is protecting it from theft. As in the case of open source, you develop code, copyright it, then allow others to share the code as lnog as the copyright and credit notice are maintained. If not, then they are breaking the law, generaly when the law is broken and personal property infringed on, screaming lawsuit is a no brainer....

    though sometimes its a good idea NOT to patch your system right away. Lets look at M$ for a sec. Most of the system patches as they come out actually cause more harm then good until they are fixed. The problem lies in deciding when and what level of patch to install on your system and weight system stababilty vs security.

    If they can arrest peopel for removing tags off matresses ...I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find a legal angle bascialy making it illegal or open the device. Esp. if they worked some angle to the lawyers bascialy saying they are protecting them selves from hackers reverse enginerring their products...though in this case that would be quite ironic if they had put some legal clause liek that on it,lol

    Though to play devils advocate they COULD have put a disclaimer saying that if the box was opened or "hacked" into for any reason it not only voided the warrenty but that the person caught doing it would be prosicuted to the full extent of the law. At least if someone did rat them out they could sue for them hacking into the box.... at least prevent stuff like this happening. Not that I'm routing for the bad guy,just like playing devils advocate.

    All back doors would do is compromise the security of the honest user. Allowing anyone from the FBI, CIA, KGB, or any hacker with a little time and intuition to gain access to your "thought to be secure" file. The people really trying to hide illegal activities with in encryption will be using "non approved" forms of encryption anyway if this legislation goes into effect..only hurting peopel like us who use it for peace of mind..not illegal activities. Encryption with backdoors completly goes against the whole reason to encrypt data in the first place. Calling encryption with backdoors secure makes just as much sense as a someone with a camcorder and the entire Real Doll collection calling himself a porn star ;)

    I think Spammers are much more needy of death then virus writers. I rarely get a virus in my inbox and if I do I think the nakedgirl.jpg.doc.bat extention is a dead ringer not to d/l it:) Besides I have been ummune to most of these "viruses" becuase if I have to use a WIN PC I use netscpae anyway, and use Pine or Netscape on my Solari or Linux boxes.     I work for a consulting company so as such we only spend money that we have coming in from contracts. There is a partial academic reimbursment plan towards degree programs but for training I get to go to maybe 1 training class a year. if I feel that "I should be up on the new technoligy" then it is up to me to go out and read books,check websites,etc to learn about it. Though on a side note, my company will usually pay for the books at least for me to read up on new stuff.

    I live in Northern, VA (DC Metro area). I am a porjects manager, I manage 2 engineering teams and a dev deam. I am currently the lead developer and one of 3 lead engineers. Even with all that I still don't typicaly work more then 55 hours a week.

    I think cloning whole humans could get very sticky, and only asking for problems. Soon enough they will fight for their own rights and what a mess we will be in,lol I am defintly all about cloning individual organs though. It would be a breakthrough in medicine so we won't have so many people deing after being on waiting lists for years waiting for transplants.
