a company like this hides behind it's own ignornace. I am not in favor of DRM technoligy, I think it's a wild goose chase, but that aside, instead of releasing a well tested DRM package and then using the findings to improve on their product they are suing a college student for pointing out the fact they released a poor product.
for the same reson people use AOL when there are far better and cheaper ways of connecting to the internet. It's one of the most visable and easiest to use ways of getting certs and registering names.
Windows is already non-secure becuase it integrates too many capabilities! Yes it does increase functionality but that is alwys the eternal struggle, balancing functionality with security. When you increase one the other must decrease. Integrating the OS with the BIOS, esp in the case of M$ sounds like it will only lead to problems later on.
depends, some universites approach the security the opposite way. You do not have ANY access until your computer MAC address has been added. So all they have to do is remove your MAC and you can change it to your hearts content but unless its an allowed MAC you are not getting out. Of course in that case I guess you could just wait itll your friend is done using his and just spoof his MAC address.
I wonder if it only scans for the application or actually watches network traffic for p2p connecitons. I wonder how long it will take a CS student to just write a daemon to listen on the connection port and respond back with a "everything is fine here" type response so that they are free to use the computer as they should be.
I think the problem started when google started ranking pages by "importance" and not "relavance" (probably not spelled right but you know what I mean):)
Are not that far off, but with my work in AI or "smart" anything devices, always come up with the same results. The weakest link is not the technoligy but more so the people using it. Remember, everytime you think you make something idiot proof, they build a better idiot.
Not too mention at $3-$4 a movie, A LOT of DVDs now are $9.99. Not much more but you keep it for free, unlimited viewing , and better quality. Though I guess people who want to buy the movie and customers of digital cable, etc are NOT the target market, if they are then this service will fail. I think if this is made to compete with blockbuster, netflix,etc.. then they have a good chance, since most people I think prefer the ability to not leave their house to "rent" a movie and as long as they don't mind waiting a few weeks later can get "new releases"
yes but I am sure it costs them money to host the information. A system admin to run the server, leasing a high speed line, paying someone to design the web page they are on, the marketing person who deiscides how to sell them, etc...
there are MANY costs involved in determining the price of an item to even "break even" more less make "a lot of money" as many seem to think they are trying to do.
I still remember the days that virii would actually do damage. When you had to format your MBR to even begin to try to fix your system and reinstall your OS. Man I feel old,lol
the "gyroscope" element is the primary piece in balancing the unit, BUT if it were not for the computer element reading the data and then constantly adjusting the first element would be useless.
I don't know, for the price, I'll stick to a much larger [then 120GB] external FW400/800 HD. If I need to have multiple machiens write to it i can just make it a shared drive. But my preference, not the best for everybody.
your example is flawed. Right now you can use MSN messanger for free. Which means in your exmaple, people WOULD be allowed in your house. They built a private network for communication and DO allow people free access but plan to allow ONLY their client to access after the date. So a better example would have been saying "would you let someone in your house, that wasnt white?" see where I am going on this.. by ONLY allowing the MS client to the network (w/o charging is the key here) then there should be no reason any client shouldn not be able to, this is the same thing AOL got in trouble for a while back.
what? so lets say I am using checking my hotmail account in safari on my OSX box or mozilla on my red hat box? which componet on my system is windows again? thats what I thought *cough* troll *cough*
I still strongly support Apple's approach on this. I know it is not really a P2P model or "file sharing" but since we all know the heart of the matter is, music companys want $$$$ and consumers want a cheaper way of getting their favorite songs. I think the Itunes store hit the nail on the head, everyone seems to be happy. The ONLY complaint I have is that they still are building up their collection, but the model is great and seems to make both sides happy.

No suprise here. We all know that SCO is on a witch hunt, the question that still confuses me is WHY?

Either that or make sure at least one of your friends is still connected and have hook up a wireless access point to his connection :)

Im more concerned about when someone hacks my underwear.

Forget the whole internet, all I need is slashdot for 100% of my news :)
Instead of going thru the trouble of VPN, or on top of why not just certificate enable (PKI) the website?
then good thing we won the war :)
Then my quesiton is.. why did you rule out WiFI ?

I'd still rather have a duel processor G5 :)
you are half right...

You are going on the assumption that they HAVE a test procedure beyond "does it work?"
