Your most important asset is curiosity. Without that, you won't get very far. You also need a very diverse set of skills. That's pretty much how I got to where I am now, and I've been a Linux IT professional since 1998. Knowing your hardware, ability to build and deploy stable server systems with the right Linux distribution, and finally learning how Linux works and why. Just installing Ubuntu is not enough, you need to objectively pick the right tool for the right job. Some days its CentOS, other days its Ubuntu. Some days some animal entirely set apart from either. Jack of all trades, master of none. Running through a few builds of LFS will teach you far more than any distro will any day.

And if I have to be completely honest, being a search engine power user. Without being able to effectively use a search engine, and you'd be surprise how many people can't, you won't get very far at all.

However, it is very resource intensive, and can't run it on everything I have in service in my home. I used to run XFCE on my old Athlon/256 meg Compaq Presario 700 Laptop, but the most recent releases of Xubuntu have been using almost as much resources as GNOME/Metacity.

I've recently turned to Fluxbox. Its takes a little kung fu to get it configured just right, but it uses next to no resources, has a system tray, and has a very nice set of themes, at least the Debian/Ubuntu packages do. I don't run it on my Acer Gemstone with 2 gigs of ram, or my desktops which all have 1 gig or more, but its a good alternative for those resource limited machines.

  14. The future of Third Edition? on D&D 4th Ed vs. Open Gaming · · Score: 1

I'm a long time RPG player, for at least 20 years. I was on the fence with 4e, given my years of support of WOTC and D&D in general. I love third edition to death, however at best I was going to pick up the players handbook if I found a 4e seat. At worst I was going to live and let live, and continue with my beloved 3rd edition. Now, I am not so sure. I really can't, in good conscious, support 4e. Not as a Linux advocate, and certainly not as a gamer. This move is as bad, if not worst, than anything Microsoft has ever pulled.

So it looks like the debate for me has been settled, I'll be sticking with 3rd edition. The only way I'll jump ship is if, for some odd reason, I can't get a 3e game off the ground, or find a seat. With Paizo continuing the Third Edition legacy with Pathfinder RPG, that may not ever be an issue.

  18. Gamer (fanboy) Response on Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition, Latest News · · Score: 4, Interesting
I'm a big D&D guy, its my main hobby away from computers and Linux. Part time player, full time Dungeon Master. Been playing since junior high, I'm 34 now. As a Linux user, I feel WOTC is the best thing to happen to D&D, and gaming in general. The Dungeon Master is the only person who really needs the core set, and even then I'm not sure even he needs the books, but it helps. Players don't need anything, 3E, 3.5E, and soon 4E are all released under the OGL, which is an open source style license. Player information is released in a System Refrence Document, commonly known as the SRD. The core set (Players Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, Monster Manual) are for the most part made available for free. There are certain things that are left out, like character creation rules, but they are pretty easy to figure out. There is hundreds, if not thousands, of players on Myth Weavers, DNDOG, ENWorld, and other sites who don't own the core set.

Of course, if your on board with the D&D Insider your probably going to need to buy the core set. The Insider is actually the Dungeon and Dragon magazines which WOTC brought back in house, combined with a ton of digital tools such as an online game table, dungeon master tools, character creator and visualizer, and other features. That would probably be the only reason to buy the core set, unless of course you have some reason to want to see WOTC succeed, which I do. Of course that doesn't mean I'm going to buy supplements I'll never use. I'm pretty far from the completist.

This really isn't a money grab, at least not on some levels. Yeah, I'm sure Hasbro is happy about the core set, but Third Edition being tapped dry. There is nowhere else to go. I don't want to see WOTC die. If they don't release a new edition, its over. Look at whats been released lately, compendium after compendium, splatbook sequels, worthless environment books, adventures I have no interest in playing. Nobody is buying these books, nobody but completists, and there isn't enough of those to keep a company afloat. Besides, there is plenty of rules that need to be tweaked, plenty of skills that need to go, plenty of classes that need revision. Third edition was broken the day they released it, ask Monte Cook, who wrote third edition.

Its time to take what everyone learned playing third edition for the last eight years, and make the game better. WOTC deserves their coin for what they do. Of course, I'm a WOTC fanboy, what do I know.

The Other Animals Are Agin' Us
    By Tim Bedore 2003
    URL: http://www.vaguebuttrue.com/genius.htm

Did you see that in the paper the other day about those carp in the Mississippi River jumping into boats and bonking fisherman in the head? It's true. They're called big head carp, they're from Asia and they're attacking and severely injuring many fisherman.

Biologists claim the roar of boat motors agitates and excites these carp and they jump towards the sound but I think these biologists are naively missing an obvious connection. Fish are attacking fisherman. For the fish it's get them before they get you, kill or be killed. Even if these fisherman are practicing catch and release, that's a very painful, embarrassing experience for any fish and apparently they have had it.

What about the increase in mountain lion attacks? Great White sharks moving closer to shore? Moose have been showing up in towns and stomping on people. A squirrel was in my living room last spring. Am I the only one that sees a pattern here? People, wise up! The other animals are against us. It doesn't take a genius to see there's an inter-species conspiracy to thwart the urban expansion of man.

How do the squirrels fit in? Surveillance. They spy on what we people are doing in the cities and report back to the bigger species out there on the front lines.

And taken together these other species represent walking, we hope not yet talking, scratching, biting weapons of mass destruction. And if these other species can convince the insect world, for example a well known anti-human group like the killer bees, to join up our way of life and our democracy could be history.

The skeptical may ask why would these other species want to hurt us? Obviously, they hate us. They are jealous of our way of life. We swim in chlorinated, safe environment pools, then towel off and have an adult beverage. They are stuck eating sludge in the Mississippi, a river polluted by guess who: their mortal enemy man. And to top it all off we eat them.

This invasion of Asian carp is no accident. This is stage one of their well planned attack. We ignore the obvious at our own peril.

We can no longer sit back and wait for them to attack us. It's time we adopt a new doctrine regarding these other animals. We have to wipe out any and all species who are a lined against us, wherever they are. We can not rest until every big head carp, great white shark, mountain lion, moose and squirrel and any other species that associates with them are defeated.

If the U.N. wants to get involved fine, if not we can do it alone. Of course the British will show up, they always do, but we will fight to protect our way of life. And if you don't agree, you're an unpatriotic idiot who hates America.
