  1. Battery life is the deal breaker for me on Toshiba's iPod Competitor · · Score: 2

Does this have a rechargeable Li-Polymoer battery like the iPod or do I have to buy AAs and a clunky charger that I'll have to carry around.

One of the beauty of Firewire is that the iPod or any device can charge off it. No need for an adapter.

Anyone know the battery life of the Gigabeat ?

  2. The beast needs to be attacked one cell at a time on Andreessen on the Browser Wars · · Score: 5, Insightful

Andreesen is wrong about a few things. MS can be combated successfully. The trick is to not play their game of proprietary software on a platform they control. No one can succeed in that territory. The trick is not to succumb to their tactics, and to stay agile and ahead of them

Well, MS does not really have a way of combating Mozilla. How are they going to undermine a free product. As long as we keep fighting the battles we can beat the Beast. It's going to take patience and a few good victories to gain momentum.

It's already happening, Wal-Mart's loading Linux on their dirt-cheap PCs for the masses, Apple's making thier systems ever more Linux frindly, IBM has given Linux their papal blessing. Peru and a few other enlightened Nation-states are considering Linux. ILM and the CG market is shifting to Linux.

Mozilla already boast features that IE does not have: Tab browsing, ad disabling, cleaner javascript, multiple platform support. Let's build on this take the browser even further. By constantly improving the user experience Mozilla can win back users.

Ultimately, Linux and Mozilla will win the mindshare battle one step at a time. Let's continue to build kick ass, peer reviewed software one line at a time, and we will succeed in time. Give this time, in 3-5 years time, more victories will come.

Remember it is darkest before sun rise.

To the first good, cocoa based exchange compatible client. I can easily see 100k-500k licenses. I bet, Ximian can make more money on a OS X native exchange client than anything else.

But these guys seem to be blinded by the GNU cause and don't want to make money.

Think about it Entourage is priced at $150. And lacks Exchange or group scheduling functionality.
Make a cocoa based PIM with group scheduling and exchange support. You can sell it for $100-$150. Even at a modest 50,000-100,000 units sold that is $5-10 million dollars. This is not improbable given that the number of OS X customers by year end is ~3 million.

Ximian should get off their ass, hire a Cocoa programmer and develop such a product.

Not! A lot of the action in Jaguar is going to be behind the scenes. the Reg article only focuses on the Finder/Dock because these guys are classic (OS 9) freaks who are more concerned about form (looks) than function.

Here's a better preview of Jaguar
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/newversion/

To summarize here are some of the big changes in Jaguar

Architecture: BSD 4.4, CUPS, PAM, POSIX additions, GCC 3

Networking: Rendezvous (ZeroConf), IPSEC, IPv6, Exchange Support (this is a biggie)

FileSystem: Active Directory, Open Directory, seamless SMB support (client/server)

Media: Full MPEG-4 support, AAC audio, 5.1 support. ISMA 1.0 support.

Universal Access: Boatload of innovation here.

Quartz Extreme: Full OpenGL compositing of movies and pix and text.

Apps: Upgraded Mail (exchange support), semantics based Mail filtering. iChat, Systemwide Database, new AddressBook, Sherlock 3

Inkwell: The best handwriting recognition in the world (from Newton) comes to OS X

User Interface improvements: Integrated find in the Finder. Find by name and find by text in a finder window. This is huge! Quickdraw text over Quartz. Many, many finder tweaks bringing it on par with OS 9 experience and imho way beyond.
And of course, a speed boost through and through.

Also, I am sure Steve is going to demo some more new features at Macworld NY. I am sure there is going to be a lot of surprises at that show.
