  1. wrong use of word 'hacker' on Hacker U. · · Score: 1

Bleh - im tired of hearing the word 'Hacker' being used the wrong way - and you all probably know what i mean by that.

What they do - it seems - at this school is just teaching security issues the other way around. There are tons of private institutions and public universities that teach computer security but they dont call it hacking. Hacking/cracking are buzzwords at the moment and therefore it might make a crappy institution seem cooler.. Though i doubt any "real" hacker/cracker would attend to that school. They already learned whatever they might teach over there from publicly aviable info on the internet. In My Opinion that's the way you should learn security issues aswell.

I find it doubtful that anyone would turn into a hacker pro just by paying $60 for a few courses in hacking - its like saying an MSCE is a guru ;)

    - If youre worried about the american AV-firms being leaned on or something like that i'd suggest F-Secure, Finnish high-tech AV-detection and they also have encryption products etc, check it out.

    - "Is Linux Safe?" has come up several times.. If you are really paranoid you should use OpenBSD. It's about as secure as an operating system gets AFAIK. Personally i'll stay with Linux as I have for a long time.

    - It's really really scary to see the amount of reports of new laws on "anti-terrorism" and how FBI etc is getting more and more authority. It's kind of a dark future we're moving into - I hope they realise what they are doing to basic freedom before its too late.. Im glad that Europe hasn't gone as far (yet?) though..

Seriously consider the Nokia Communicator. Its IMO the best of two worlds if you really want a good PDA and a good Phone in the same packages.. Personally I like to be able to just carry my phone so i chose a small phone and a Visor - but that's just me.

But.. For all-in-one - Nokia should be IT.

Im using a proxy which hides my ip and I dont accept all cookies. That way I atleast hope im abit safer from companies trying to figure out my surfing habits - what else should I be concerned of? Should i be concerned? I mean its not like anyone would have a stranglehold on me by knowing I read slashdot and use the web to get new Linux software etc.. or?

I couldnt agree with you more.

The only people that would use these "specialised" phones are the kids and the teens that dont really pay they're own phonebills. Doing expensive products that seem silly to everyone else but them is dangerous because the person paying the bill should also be convinced.

I dont think this economic slowdown will stop the building of a higher-bandwidth global telecommunications network but it will take longer than they anticipated in they're tech-bubble dreams. All in all im not holding my breath or keeping myself from buying a new cell-phone once my old one dies.

To be honest I dont understand how that is so damn cool - guess its supposedly cool cause it runs Linux.. Seems to be a good way to advertise semi-useless toys to geeks though ;).

Seriously - last time I checked I got a cell-phone 'cause I wanted a device that lets me call parents/friends and _talk_ to them.
I agree that SMS for instance is a pretty good way of sending short notes but that's where my need for text/graphic-based communications end. Which is why I choose the smallest damn phone..

They are popular enough in Finland aswell. I've had one for oh.. 2-3 years and I like it alot. Everyone that carries somekinda player usually carries an MD over here. Not that its supercommon but I dont see it as a total flop atleast. Its easy enough to record on with digital connectors to CD-player. I listen to my CD's at home and on them with my MD. I'll buy a MP3 player when its as easy to carry around as the MD and holds as much music as I carry in MDiscs when travelling (5-10).

Bad PR but there are alot of ppl out there that have a large ego and dont want to show that they are "dependant" on others..

Personally i'd love to have a Linux-server that acts as a firewall and file-server for me while I toy around with my main comp for all kinds of different stuff. But.. problem is I dont really know if I can trust the speed of an old motherboard to deliver the packets fast enough. Im connected to a 10MBps University LAN and can often download stuff in excess of 800kbps. Would a firewall with cheap network cards and old motherboard slow this connection down?
