  1. Is this why the rain has increased lately ? on Geoengineering a Snow-Free Winter Fails In Moscow · · Score: 1

The past year or so the North Eastern US has seen almost weekly rain, it's almost impossible now to go 5 days without rain.

People please stop messing with the weather, you couldn't predict it then and you can't control it now (and you still can't predict it).

And I am really PO that the monsters don't fight each other. That was the best part of the old id series...

I too loved playing with the ability to make the monsters turn on each other, but the problem is that only works when you can have tens of monsters on screen at once. In Doom 3 the simultaneous monster count is so low that if two monsters started to fight each other the remaining character in the room (you) could walk by unscathed.

  6. This has nothing to do with the paper book itself. on Old-Fashioned DRM Protects Harry Potter Book · · Score: 1

This is all about protecting the product from theft in the distribution channels and ensuring a simultaneous release at all retail outlets. The article discusses efforts by the publisher and distributers and has nothing to do with rights or restrictions towards those that may want to purchase this book.

Once you have the book in your hands it is just a paper book, talk about a sensationalistic article summary.

And, not that they need it, but this 'security' is also a good way to increase perceived demand for the book.

Or, on my Panasonic DMR-E85H, hit record, done.

If your's is the North American version DMR-E85H (the one with tv guide on screen) - it is great when it works. Even with the firmware update mine will occasionally miss a timed recording. I recommended this unit to a friend before I learned of it's issues - his will absolutely refuse to do a timed recording of channel 3 between 12:30AM and 2:00PM (you have to manually press the on button after it fails to turn on to record, then it starts to record).

If anyone is considering a dmr-e85h over the newer dmr-eh50 because it seems to be a $$$ deal - be warned. I have to believe there is no way the eh50 can not have better reliability.

  8. Desktops are no longer obsolete in 3 years... on Laptops Outsell Desktops · · Score: 1

Why replace what I am happy with?

On the other hand a laptop is more prone to needing replacement due to moving it around all the time (may break) and the batteries are expensive to replace (might as well replace the whole thing while I'm at it..).

Plus laptops are still experiencing significant performance increases and bigger screens while desktops have more or less leveled off in performance - and desktop monitors are a separate unit to replace.

A portable device will always have a lower time of service than a desktop that sits under your desk and is not subject to abuse - one has guaranteed continued sales while the other has market saturation...

with 3800mAh NiMHs becoming available we're nearly doubling the capacity of the old NiCd packs

This depends on how long you have been in the hobby, when I started 1200mah NiCds were the norm, I am seeing battery capacity triple :)

But cars will not run three times longer, wanna know why? We install faster more power hungry motors so that we can use the higher capacity to go faster - not longer.

You can apply this same 'problem' to most modern devices - people buy what has bright blinky lights and completely ignore the 'boring' devices that may last much longer on the same battery.

The code at this link is under Title 39, which appears to pertain specifically to the US Postal Service. Does this law also apply to merchandise shipped by a private carrier such as UPS or Fedex?

If so, could someone clarify or post a link to a precedent that extends Title 39 Chapter 30, or any existing law with a similar intent, to include private carriers?
