That's why I consider the design faulty. Either require all usb cables to support max current or don't use the same physical connector. Different physical connectors can still fit in the same jack, just make the new jack detect an extra pin or protrusion. Trying to make an old 500ma cable forwards compatible with a 5000ma cable using the same exact jack is folly, but they managed to sort of do it.

BTW resistor detection is now deprecated in the USB spec. gee i wonder why?

Seems to me that it would be a faulty design that requires a 'cable' to need any electronics at all.

Just like anything with a jack, you can't really trust anything that may get plugged into it.

Wires, wrapping, and shielding, sure. Electronics (caps, resistors, etc.) should be in the devices themselves, and devices when encountering bad cables should always fail 'safe'.

  24. Re:Consumption resumption. on The Chinese Town Where Old Christmas Lights Go · · Score: 1

The quickest way to find the problem is to use an ohm meter.

Connect one lead of the meter to BOTH of the string plug's prongs. Please be sure it's not plugged in for safety :)

Starting with a light near the middle, remove it and use the other lead of the meter to test both contacts within the socket. The contact that does not conduct electricity will indicate which side of the string has the break. You have just eliminated half of the lights as the potential problem.

Place the bulb back into the socket, and do the same thing with another light about midway on the 'broken' side of the string, Continue this to narrow down the problem area.

If a dozen are burned out in a single string there's a good chance nearly all will be.

As each burnt out bulb's shunt takes over to carry the current,, the voltage to each remaining working light is slightly increased. This reduces the life of the other bulbs. At some point the bulbs will start failing quicker and quicker until quite quickly the whole strng is burnt out or nearly-so and the built-in fuse blows.
