All this anti-Iran propaganda seems to be coming out at the same time Iran is switching from Dollars to Euros for its oil transactions. Strangely enough, Iraq previously tried this too, just before the 2003 invasion.
If we were going to use them, we would have done so already while oil was cheap. Now it is not and won't be again. Solar/Wind/Tidal are just tools built from oil for increasing the EROEI of the invested oil. They are fundamentally not a replacement for oil.
I kinda think that was a given, AC. Seems like a good idea to me. People aren't as God-fearing as they used to be, but now we have the tech to make sure the ones in power _are_ constantly watched by higher-powers now.
Your login name is unusually apt in this article I have to admit. I suspect any remedy for bad water in terms of filtering should already be happening. Prevention is better than cure.
Um, what are they going to do if the drinking water on the ISS shows up as toxic? It's not like they can get any more in a hurry. If my drinking water was tainted, I'd rather not know about it if I was in their situation I think. There might be some kind of placebo effect where simply knowing your drinking water is tainted might induce nausea.
Could it perhaps be that marketing people took over and pushed up the price of what amounts to pieces of cheap mass-produced plastic that dragged down the company in the first place? To me there's something wrong in needing to jump through so many hoops to sell something so simple and appealing as building blocks.
I'd be more interested on the speed tests on machines with smaller memory, since a big win in browser development for me is bringing older kit back into play by making it more comfortable for websurfing. (I'd also be interested in seeing browser comparisons under Linux instead of XP too)
Interesting. I'd soulike to know how efficient this is in storing solar energy (any less than the 10-15% now possible via solar cells. Also, what are the production costs and can it be scaled up, or is this destined to remain in the lab?
Ultimately, nature has a million-year R&D advantage over us - plants are the only true carbon-neutral solar fuel collectors really over a full product life cycle.
I wonder if this is related to the effects on the brain of the balance between Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids in the diet. (high-fat Western meat-based diets usually contain more Omega 6, whereas low-far fish based Eastern diets tend to have more Omega 3). I've seen studies that have shown that increasing Omega 3 in the diet (via cod liver oil pills) in school kids can improve their school results - there is a lot of Omega 3 usage in the brain I believe.
It definitely makes me think of the apocryphal story of NASA spending millions developing a pen that could write in space while the Russians just used a pencil.
Here's what Will Self has to say on the topic of cellphones and the future:
"What they promote is a meaningless level of anonymous chit-chat with people, where you don't have to get down-and-dirty and smell somebody, or see their body-language. They are actually the very very key representation of the anomie and alienation of our culture.
And the idea that there was a cash bonanza from mobile phone licensing, that the (UK) government predicated its entire second term spending plans on, is one of history's most delicious ironies.
And when it all comes down, when it all falls down about us, all that will be left in the wreckage of our civilization is a single tiny little black oblong going 'diddle-dee-dee-diddle-dee-dee-deeeee'. And there'll be nobody to answer it. "
On the subject of data center running costs, why are there not more data centers in Iceland? The cold climate (to minimize cooling costs, which can be 50% of the total power drain in hot climates) combined with cheap renewable geothermal electricity would make it ideal I think.
Agreed. I'm looking forward to getting something like the Gecko Edubook which can run on cheap AA batteries instead of an expensive custom Li-Ion battery.

"That leaves $30 to $35 in the hands of the publishers."
So why can't we just download games for about half the street price?

It makes me sad that this is news in 2009. This should really have been commonplace research by now.

"somebody had to scan the world's back catalog."
Interestingly, Vannevar Bush proposed doing this in 1945. Shame it's taken so long to come to fruition.
Yea, and Al Gore invented the internet. Sure....

Not exactly the most IP-compliant country in the world, and pretty much has the USA over a barrel economically right now from the look of things.
Not even that I'd argue, more like pigeon sneakernet

because then we could label them terra-rists.
(sorry).
1967? That is old. I am wondering if the original program fell prey to Zawinski's Law:
Every program attempts to expand until it can read mail. Those programs which cannot so expand are replaced by ones which can.
