It is stealing. Although your not making money at it is still stealing.
You can compare it to everything in the world to try to justify your actions, but it is stealing.
This is a connection for your home, not your home and everyone else. The price is based on a one single user model. Period, not a 50 person mondel. You want 50 people to use it, pay for 50 people to use it.
I personally don't want you sucking up all the damn bandwidth in my sector because you fill you need to steal and give to the rich. That is right your not giving to the poor but the rich guy next door that makes enough money to pay for it also.
Get off you high horse, come to to earth and just admit your stealing. Otherwise your just kidding yourself and you sound silly to everyone else.
You know, the win32 apple emulator will run it. It is a thing of beauty to see wizardy crank up on a system. It is really scary how deep set my memory of those dungeons are. I was able to scream all the way to the fifth level with a new character before running into some creeping coins. Also to answer a poster below it was indeed writen in pascal, and they have a "wizardy legends" pack CD with all the Wizers on it up to 7 I think.
I don't think anything is that deep burned into my brain outside of the quickest way though Xanth in a diku mud.
Well hell I could have told you that. I play them to veg out, not deal with people, and enjoy loosing my temper at something I can take it out on. I also find that I become "SuperNeck" while I play, and the Uberness follows me into the hours after I stop playing. I was wondering why when I was running around with my grill lighter, with the flame at max screaming "MAHALITO!" people looked at me funny.
Did you ever think about getting in contact with them and maybe talking to them about the problem. It sounds like this guy/girl had and issue that did not get resolved, and resorted to using the only means they had, e-mail. Now we preach the power of such things here, and it looks like it is working. They got your attention, no? Now you did not give any specifics about your problem "why they are doing this" so I can't say that this is even something you want to do. There are not many people here that are going to feel sorry for a Media Company. It is even a good chance that the very person sending you this e-mail is from this community, and I find it ironic the one of the very "media corps" that many of the people here hate with a passion may be here asking the people causing the problem how to stop it. That is it thick baby.
Give us a clue about who you are, what you are doing to make this happen to you, and what steps you have taken on a social level to get fix the problem. You many have just open pandoras box because you may find no one here is very sympathetic to your plight.
The reason citrix is expensive is because it is the best and really has the market cornered. That out of the way the only other one worth it's salt is Canaveral iQ.
They focus on companies in the size range of around 30 to 1000 users or so. What I can tell you is that it has a universal printer driver that takes the sting out of printer setups in a share network.
To quote and artical I have on my desk " The driver runs at the server where it creates a standard Enhanced Metafile(EMF) that's delivered back to the client for processing and printing. The approach avoids multiple printer drivers and overloading of the spool engine at the terminal server, a common cause of problems." Arthor Bill Boswell
So I am not sure if that helps but at least it is better than no other solution at all. Citrix when you break it all down comes to about $320 a desktop where CanIQ checks in at about $175.
The day of selling hardware for a profit is gone the to the way side. You see computers have made the transition to a comodity iteam. Like a television. In the day you had television shops that sold only televisions, and they did repair. It was a good run, I know my grandfather use to do it. Hell when TV breaks now a days you just chunk it in the garbage. Computers are getting to that level, not yet but they are getting close for the average user. Why spend 250 bucks having your old computer fixed at 75 bucks an hour + parts when you can get a brand new one for 400?
The only people I have known to make this work over the long run have been the guys that sell bulk to established middle to large networks at a fair price. The guy we are dealing with is selling us "Value Added", and giving us the hardware at a very low price. Mind you he still makes a profit just not as much at say CompUSA. He markets the network administrator, system eng, CTO at a middle to large businesss and makes it his job to keep them happy. He delivers everything we need very quickly. We could order online only but it is a hassle for us. That involves shipping, and RMAs if stuff is broke. What this guy offers us is "unconditional" returns on product that is hosed, on the spot, and delivered to our door. This keeps us from having to have the extra helpdesk guy to do RMAs, purchasing, and just not having the hassle of looking for it.
If he does not have it he gets it for us and we know it is going to be about 5 to 8%(which would if trends are the same still net you about 20%) more than we could find online but it is well worth it to us. We spend about 100k to 150k a year with this one guy, and it is well worth every penny. Mom and pop stores are fine, just don't sell to Mom and Pop there is not money in it and they will eat you alive in support. Wrangle in the the business networks around you, bribe the admins and CTO with some free goodies, deliver to the place on the day that they order if you have it and you will have a place that starts to really depend on you.
Then again what do I know, I left that biz about 5 years ago and back then we could mark it up 200% and people kissed us for it.
Where I use to work we found a neat solution like that also. I found that if we turn off our monitors at night it saves money. So I started turning off all the monitors at my new job. Who knew it was going to cost us big money because at my other job I had come up with this idea to turn off all the monitors at night. I heard last week that they applied for a parent on my idea, of course it was really the companies because I thought of it and acted on company time.
Well that all depends on if you need it. Alas for ICQ all you need to do is kill the nslookup to the server to stop it.
If no one on your gen user population needs ssh or ssl, then of course you don't need to run it.
Keep in mind that to do this(ssh/ssl out for the client) your going to need support for it somewhere else(root server for the program). It is not going to be a local setting to the client only. So, really this is not going to work because the admin is going to have that control not the user.
I still think blocking the root servers ip and changing the dns for the icq/msn lookup is your best move. As soon as you change the your local dns for the root server for icq/im/tril they are going to add the ip to the local host file. So your really going to have to block ips.
Hell if you don't want to do it at the router just force them to proxy and deny the ip's at the proxy. This problem is not that hard.
Everyone here is trying to tell this guy how he should be doing his job. That IM is a "needed tool", well la de da... that is all well and good. His question was how does he go about blocking it, not why should I try to keep it. Anyone here think that just maybe someone above him asked that it be blocked because of abuse? Because the markatoids are using to to chat with someone all day, or that the CIO thinks that business secrets are walking out the door on IM. No all you guys can think about it why you don't want it strip away from you or your bretheon.
I think the easy way for you to really do this right is to go look up the ports on the net, block all you can. Then stick snort, sniffer, whatever on your outgoing line and catch the rogue ports. Keep blocking them until someone screams. Better yet block them all and just open up the ones you know they need out your default router. 80, 443, 21, 22, 23, 53, 110(if you want them to pop, 1494/1604(citrix), etc...etc.. Do the same for UDP. Why try and use a open all and block few when it is so much better to block all and open the ones you need.
very nice! I have yet to see that watch phone, and it dose not look way out tacky. If they could combine this with the bluetooth headset that is posted below it would be pretty slick.
Give me a wireless phone that will fit on my ear with a small 1/2 sized boom mic. that will allow me to plug it into my pda/computer to upload phone lists and you have a big time sale. "Dial, 555-5555 connect" would be wonderful for voice dialing. Something that will be light enough to leave on while I sit at my computer, drive, pull hotswap drives, would be wonderful. I have seen these for short distances that you plug into your phone on your desk. Why not go ahead and shrink the portable phone down enough that you wear it like your would a hat, or a watch. It seems the most logical step.
Take the number of exams times the number of people that get cets. It is a drop in the bucket. I would even guess that the total gross, no net, of this will be less than one oracle install and licence for a 4 processor machine.
Money grab please...I think it is more about making sure it is not a book worm that has the cert and that they have "proven" hands on exp with the program. Sometimes I think Slashdot is nothing more than on big troll fest by the editors....you got me.
Having worked in a hospital setting and knowning what problem you about to have the battery life of you laptop is going to be the smallest problem with what you are about to try to do.
Anyway, problem at hand. I know how hospitals are about money, your not solving a problem you are the problem. Damn money pit that IT group is but you going to have to ask for more money and I will supply why.
#1. You can't do the "recarge" batterys and replace them schtick because laptops are frail little things and you know they will break with repeated switching of batteries within the month. Look who your going to be giving them to and really ask your self this question. Will they break them and how fast. Yep, your going to need backup systems, and at least 3 of them at any given time.
#2. My guess is your best bet is going to be to get some kind of tablet computer "Mira" would be and example. Or a small CE device, something that has low power consumption that will last at least 4 hours. That is a basic shift. What ever software your trying to run get it for Citrix and ICA client them in over a wireless backbone. Remember that HIPPA is coming soon, your going to need to get the specs on your wireless, encyrption, etc..don't get left holding the bag on the HIPPA restrictions. Bring them up now! We did a wireless CE to citrix solution using arrowpoint switches. These handhelds had light pens to scan the patients to pull med records. Again I stress security, wireless--medical records...you see my point about your battery life not being your only concern.
I wish you the best of luck, Doctors and computers are about the hardest thing in the world to get to work together. If you say it is for the nurse, well then it is for the doctor. Believe it. Anyway, good luck.
If they countered and you are slow enough not to consider they are buying time to get a replacement or harbor ill will about all this your going to get what you deserve.
If they do think your worth keeping, and are willing to match the salary. Go for the gold! Ask for a little bit more and a golden parachute. IE> get a contract for a "if i get fired" you give me (name a number you think would cover your distress). When they freak just say "hey, you guys want to keep me, and I want to stay but I need some assurances that this is not going to go bad on me. After such day this contract is null and void." Make it 6 months or a year or whateveryou want. Just cover your butt, at this point your in control because you have out.
I am not saying grill them, I am just saying your in a good position to cover your ass and get some things you want. Remember something made you want a different job figure out what that was and really look to see if it changed. I don'tthink it was all the money. It never is.
I find the I get motion sickness when I get hot in a moving car/truck/plane etc..etc. Most of the time this also only happends when I am the one that is not in controll of the said object.
Hence when I started to play games as a kid I noticed that I also started to have the same issues. Ironicly enough the cure to both turned out to be the same. Keep cool! I don't mean this in a "Hey baby, check out my package" kind of way I mean cold like your nipples could cut glass cold.
Also found that if I used things that helped with sea sickness fixed my problems as well. The bands with the buttons on the inside fore pressure points don't work as well but they did offer me some relief.
Over all the only thing that really really helped and cures me to this day is keeping your body cold and having a little break every 29 minutes or so to re-orient.(spelling?)
I wish you the best of luck and turn that air down low, get a nice cold drink, and launch a scud.
Radio-Free Europe. I think the USA should set up very high end wi-fi along the borders and broadcast DHCP into china. Smuggle in cards, and repeaters...it would be fun for the whole family!
America would be loved...err. hated because of porn, er loved because of porn..err..shit what was my point!
Hacker making software knowing more to stop hackers is such bullshit. Most hackers that use the term like that can't code their way out of a wet paper bag. Saying hackers would make better code is fine, but get a clue that when you use the term "Hacker" no matter how you mean it the mainstream media will always see it as "EVIL" period. Hell they even get pissed when someone else says it if they are not "hackers".
For the love of Pete, everyone else hears hackers making software know how to protect you from the hackers, err sorry crackers, er wackers, black hat, grey hat, white hat, red hat, tinky winky hat...ahh hell you know the "bad hackers" are going to do it also and make us pay. BAh...Your going to code a back door I know it. To push the point they will point to the C compiler...eww but the was to prove a point right?!
Slashdot and the legions of ethical hackers need to learn that the word hacker will forever be seen in the eyes of 90% of the world as bad. Plus no one is going to believe that a bunch of people coding for free is going to not do something devious to make money, despite what you may really do. Those same 90% of the world that see hacking as a bad word also believe people don't work for free. Later all,
Also if you wondering the reg edit is:
HKey_LOCAL_Machine\software\microsoft\windows\c
Change the following:
AUOptions - Data: (1)
AUState - Data: (7)
Enjoy,
To turn off automatic updates for your computer:
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click Turn off automatic updating. I want to update my computer manually.

Let me get this straight. A group of nut monkeys with all the power and money voted to keep everyone else out.
I am just shocked out of my bean on this one. Paint me stupid but what did you expect?

Web, e-mail, voice, wap, lan, dvd, wetbar, cd...please enough already.

Have you seen the documentation on HIPPA? No you have only seen what has been given to you.
Trust in that HIPPA is no where near done with your, me, or everyone else.
I don't even think HIPPA knows when they will be done declaring what are really going to do.
