  2. Re:SVG is the best thing ever! on SVG And The Free Desktop(s) · · Score: 1

That's a good analogy, but does it extend to the type and quality of the images you can produce? Personally, I don't listen to MIDI songs because a recording (WAV) is much more versatile and a better representation of the recorded music.

So, with SVG, is it useful for images more complex than just line art or cell shaded drawings? Images more realistic? (Like photo-realistic drawings?) Line art and cell shading definately has a huge application, especially on the desktop, but if SVG is only good for line art and related style images, I can see the application being limited.

Try telling some of the kids in the design building across from me that they have to use only line art and cell shading from now on... (then run...) :)

  3. Reinvent the Industry on RIAA To Subpoena Univ. of Michigan Names · · Score: 5, Insightful

I really wish that instead of wasting effort trying to get around the RIAA and legalize the sharing of music copyrighted by RIAA artists, people would change their focus and just abandon the music industry! Then, put the effort and energy into reinventing a new way to create, distribute, and listen to music! One that gives that gives the artists what is due to them for their creativity and provides for the promotion and distribution needs as well.

I mean seriously, how many of the top 40 artists actually put out creative music that isn't just a rehash of the last material that made the record company millions? Very few! (If you answered spears, timberlake, or others of their breed, leave now!) :)

How much do you really care about the music you listen to? Do you search for music you really enjoy? Quality music? original music? Bands that pour themselves into their projects? Or do you just buy the next thing the record companies and MTV shoves in your face?

I really hate the fact that the industry is controlled by the pre-teens who could care less about wether the music they listen to is any good. The drones that buy the next spears look-a-like or the latest Creed cover band.

Ok, enough ranting. :) Unfortunately, I have no idea *how* the industry should be rewritten. But, IMHO, we should completely abandon the current industry and start something new from scratch. A system that would work, that would be fair, and that would not be controlled by the corps.

  4. Re:Doesn't this seem like a put-on? on Junkie Loves His Spam · · Score: 4, Interesting

I don't think so. This could very well be completely true. This guy is a habitual impulse buyer. He's addicted to buying stuff and it evidently gives him a thrill to do so.

I've known several people that were addicted to buying things like this, only they did it at the mall, or pawn shops, or thrift stores, etc. I had a friend who's parents bought stuff all the time. Their house was stacked high with junk they never used or even touched again after it was purchased. They literally had to move large piles of random things whenever they wanted to sit on the couch, eat at the table, or do most anything in the house.

If you're addicted to this extent, what better place to feed your addiction than the internet and specifically, your email box? There are thousands of things pitched to you every day (maybe every hour!) no matter what you're doing on the net.

Just like every other media outlet, it screams "YOU NEED MORE STUFF!"... but I digress. :-)

Or you might just end up with a situation like the one in the music industry. Some sort of video game RIAA that is formed and then proceeds to try to regain control via lawsuits.

  8. Dave's Modesty: A Student Perspective on The Guy Responsible For Ctrl-Alt-Del · · Score: 1

    > He's much too modest.

Dr. Bradley? Modest!? Yeah right!! The writer of the article has obviously never been in his classes (or was just trying to land a job at IBM) :-)

Don't get me wrong, Dr. Bradley is an extremely nice guy and good professor too, but modest? hardly! lol. He has this thing he calls the "I Love Me File", which is just a collection of videos and articles on him and his life achievements (Ctrl-Alt-Del being one of several). He shows the video of him and Bill Gates (previously referenced by several people) and one when he was the question to Final Jeopardy and a whole slew of articles from his work on the early days of the IBM PC ... and he makes sure to show it to *every* class he teaches. Doesn't matter the subject, he'll work it in somewhere! (I've seen it twice already and would have seen it a third time, but I skipped out)

I guarantee this will be the next addition to his "I Love Me File"... but like I said, he's a great guy... so, congrats! GO Dr. Bradley! :-)

Seems that they dealt with the GPS jammers Iraq was using by following this method in the past war. I've been unable to find references for that particular action, but I seem to remember discussing it in my signals class last spring.
