    Work - qualification important.

So, since when are degrees and technical certs the only form of qualifications in the I.T. industry? I'd much rather hire someone who can actually show me that he/she knows what they're talking about than someone that Cisco/Microsoft/Comptia/Novell/Etc. SAYS I should hire because they have this lovely piece of paper that they can hang in their office. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with people that have the alphabet soup after their name, I'm just saying that that shouldn't be the reason that I hire them. Of course everyone doesn't have to manage/hire like I do, I'm just putting my $.02 in.

If a particular employer won't hire you based on your capabilities, but is insisting on some silly technical degree, then you probably don't want to get stuck with them, anyway.

I agree 100%. Any workplace that considers a piece of paper to be more important than true knowledge and experience is NOT a place you want to be. Many times those places are filled with people that are in I.T. strictly for the money, and do not enjoy (or care about) their jobs.

Maybe I'm wrong here, but in my experience it all depends on the girl. I've known girls who love FPS and the like and hated games like the Sims. I'm not saying that they're all like that, but I think it'd be a mistake to try to find a "girly" game for your wife/gf when it could be she actually would like the same games you do. You also have to realize that some girls just won't like any games no matter what you get them to try. On a side note though, Civ III is coming out next month, so if you want her obsessed with a game, that'd be the one to show her. :)

I don't mean to start a holy war or anything, but after reading the majority of the posts thus far I'm confused. While I agree with most people on here, that Apple has a right to defend its design from being copied, is there a double standard here between Apple and Microsoft? I just can't understand why when Microsoft does something like this it's the "Evil Empire" but when Apple does the same it's defended by the community. Then again, I guess I shouldn't try to understand the mindset of a group of people that post goat sex links and racist jokes more than anything else.

There was an article in the Post last month that had an interview with the current head of the NSA that basically said the same things. While the NSA my have some of the same problems that other government agencies have, some of their claims are not exactly true. I have 2 friends with some knowledge on the subject. The first was with the NSA during the early 70's at an NSA base in a country that "America wasn't at." The second is online currently at Ft. Meade. Both will tell you that the technology used is truly amazing and that money is not much of an issue. All workstations get replaced roughly yearly. In closing, I don't think the NSA is the big bad agency that most people make them out to be. After all, there is a shred of patriotism left in America and I'd like to think that that the fine individuals employed with the National Security Agency are a corner post of this patriotism.

Alright folks, let's think about this for a second. One major reason DSL isn't deployed more than it is, is the cost of rolling it out. The installation of the DSLAMs are quite expensive. Now, while I am excited about this new technology I don't see anything stating the cost of rollout. If this is just as expensive, and I'd bet money on it being MORE expensive, it's not going to have any better coverage than the current options. You also have to factor in the temination equipment that will have be be involved at the customer site as well. Like I said, it'll be great if something comes along and replaces my slow, expensive BRI ISDN line, but I don't see it happening for a while. Just my opinion, that's all.
