The parent is such an absurd remark. Firstly, they can not control the OS. They can Contribute, but that is it. They can legislate, enforce, or whatever. The only thing Linux is going to do is possibly make the governments more efficient at being oppressive.

You will find that all governments (especially the US government) feel "pissed" when they are not "in control", and will use whatever tools at their disposal to gain as much control as possible. The US Govt is a prime example. Look at how they have used tech to gain control of their environment.

So, The advancements that China/etc can make to Linux to make it a better tool for them are going to be used to the collective benefit of ALL linux users, (and I imagine that the BOFH Firewall admins will be especially happy). As for how the tech is used in China as opposed to the rest of the world, well, that is for the Chinese to determine.

So, a government, whether Chinese or not, will always want control... it is their job. Linux, whether modified by the Chinese/etc or not, will be better for the experience.

  17. Wrong on Daylight Savings and UNIX? · · Score: 5, Insightful
This is taken from the HP Cron man page.
    Spring and Autumn Time Transitions
On the days of daylight savings (summer) time transition (in time zones and countries where daylight savings time applies), cron schedules commands differently from normal. In the following description, an ambiguous time refers to an hour and minute that occurs twice in the same day because of a daylight savings time transition (usually on a day during the Autumn season). A nonexistent time refers to an hour and minute that does not occur because of a daylight savings time transition (usually on a day during the Spring season). DST-shift refers to the offset that is applied to standard time to result in daylight savings time. This is normally one hour, but can be any combination of hours and minutes up to 23 hours and 59 minutes (see tztab(4)). When a command is specified to run at an ambiguous time, the command is executed only once at the first occurrence of the ambiguous time. When a command is specified to run at a nonexistent time, the command is executed after the specified time by an amount of time equal to the DST-shift. When such an adjustment would conflict with another time specified to run the command, the command is run only once rather than running the command twice at the same time. Commands that are scheduled to run during all hours (there is a * is in the hour field of the crontab entry) are scheduled without any adjustment.
This is taken from the Linux cron manpage though:
Note that this means that non-existant times, such as "missing hours" during daylight savings conversion, will never match, causing jobs scheduled during the "missing times" not to be run. Similarly, times that occur more than once (again, during daylight savings conversion) will cause matching jobs to be run twice.
So, if you want things to work, use HP-Unix.

  21. Brave decision.... on Canadian High Court Rules on Copyright · · Score: 5, Insightful

It warms my heart to know that sometimes a good decision is made by people looking further into the future than just the next payback, election, or bribe.

This decision will cause a number of repurcussions with our so-called friendly neighbor the Americans.

For the last number of years the American policy toward Canada has been degrading (from the Canadian perspective). No longer are we friends, but associates. We are now enemies in lumber wars, victims in real wars, and we are treated with suspicion in all things terrorist related. We used to have the world's longest unguarded border, but that is history.

It is a shame that we no longer see eye-to-eye, but America's general trend toward a more managed society and a more selfish government has inevitably conflicted with Canada's movements toward more freedoms.

For us this is a good thing because we will gain advantages over the americans in the grand scheme, especially in terms of freedom to innovate.

I only hope that Canada makes more decisions which open up further opportunities. Let's face it, a business would be able to operate easier from Canada than the US (from a government red-tape perspective), especially in an international market.
