  1. Is this deal going to affect fantasy sports? on Take Two Lands Exclusive MLB Deal · · Score: 1

I read previously when this deal was rumored that this may also affect fantasy sports sites like yahoo and sandbox. Rarely do they use team logos (if ever) but they do refer to players in the MLBPA and report stats from major league games. I know there is a court battle going on saying that stats inc(the stats company that provides stats to most fantasy sites like sandbox and television broadcasts like the cubs on WGN) is arguing that stats from games are based on factual events and can not be claimed as intelectual property.

In response to some of the previous posts about the simplicity of baseball games I have to disagree. I'm a pretty big baseball fan and I really like some of the more advanced baseball games like EAs series. They bring more of the pitcher hitter battle into it where you are changing speeds location and pitch selection. You control whether you try to pull the ball or go the opposite way. You can choose slide types to break up double plays or avoid tags and everyone can jump dive and reach for balls.

Overall I really felt like baseball games were going in the right direction and I hope this doesn't change that. That said one of my favorite baseball games was called(I think) world series baseball for the sega dreamcast and it was done by sega sports.

  2. Re:Here too on World of Warcraft Suffers More Downtime · · Score: 1

I have to disagree with you on that one. Dark Age of Camelot launched without a hitch that I can remember. The only downtime was a once a week scheduled patch that included new features.

I played on one of the biggest servers and it would take 300 people being in the same immediate area.

Every mmo has it's problems there is no doubt but Blizzard apparently didn't do enough stress testing or didn't control server population balance if there are some servers that are getting hosed and others that are competely fine.

It's very common for recording studios to record digitally, drop it to 2 inch analog and then go back to digital to try to maintain all the benefits of digital editing but still get that warm analog sound.

  4. Mythic has released 2 free expansions on Dark Age of Camelot Releases Old Expansion as Patch · · Score: 4, Interesting

Mythic had 2 expansions "Foundations" that they released free of charge. One was an entire housing system and zones and the other was a makeover of the RvR zones and system. They have done a pretty good job with making sure that the 12 dollars a month doesn't just go to bug fixing and server costs it also pays for added content if you want to download it. On top of that they have had 2 yearly pay expansions (with the 3rd being released tomorrow Dec 7th)

I hope more companies follow Mythic's lead and make the standard monthly mmo fee actually feel like it is paying for something.

  5. IT needs a Union on Quality of Life Issues Holding Back Game Industry · · Score: 4, Insightful

Gaming is not the only area of IT that is treating thier employees this way. After 2.5 years working as a consultant at one of the largest consulting firms as an out of college grad I finally left to go to a smaller firm with less required overtime.
The consulting firm set what they called "stretch goals". Goals that were lofty and perhaps unreachable to force workers to work 60-70 hour work weeks.
People died for the 40 hour work week around the turn of the century. This is the reason for labor unions. Since the IT industry doesn't have a strong union companies will force their staff to work as hard as possible to make the most amount of money.
I can at least empathize with this person while sitting on the 40th floor of a downtown chicago building on a sunday afternoon in 98 degree heat (inside) because they don't turn on the air conditioning on the weekends. IT needs a union.

  8. Respect Lucaus for doing his own thing. on George Lucas Speaks on Trilogy Changes · · Score: 2, Insightful

I give Lucas credit for doing his own thing. Don't think any of this Lucas bashing is new he took heat for Jedi and the ewoks being too cute(think jar jar esque with less media hate).

Look at his early scripts, Luke Starkiller? What George Lucas has always written has been cheesy in the way of
"And I'll do it in that mode from the 1930s Saturday matinee serials, using kind of 1930s and '40s sensibilities, and I'll base it on sort of mythological motifs and icons"

He's been saying that as long as I've been paying attention. I think it's a safe bet that he wanted to make the first movies even cheesier except for studio executives forcing him to bring it back to the mainstream. He was young and had to do what the studio told him, not having the clout or finances to do otherwise.

I think he is re-releasing THX-1138 in part to say "The shit I did before star wars was freaking wacky and the fact that you happened to like the original trilogy was luck"

He is producing art and just because it's not the hollywood standard sun glasses cool doesn't mean it's any less as a work. These are his ideas and I respect him for not caving to popular opinion and doing it how he wants. All that being said I think Han shoots first ;)

"My guess is not close at all, which would be a good thing, because I really think books should be used as inspirations for movies, not as collars."

Yeah because why follow the well thought out story that the author intended when you can just steal their ideas to make a big budget hollywood explosion flick and then con the people who liked the book to create the pre movie hype with false expectations.

We all know the movie is rarely as good as the book but it's over the top when hollywood producers decide that in order to make something more exciting and marketable it needs more explosions/fighting and a love story.

There are hundreds of examples in recent years. The one that comes to mind is the sequel to Jurassic Park, The Lost World. The book was ok. It wasn't high brow by any means but it wasn't explosions and danger around every corner so I go see the movie to find out they removed the main character and they added riddiculous scenes of dinosaurs escaping and running through city streets.

If you are going to make something "inspired by" the book don't market it as the movie version of the book. Rename it something else and say it's inspired by a book called %$^& somwhere in the trailer. Don't try to con the fans of the book out of their money and make it appeal to the masses.

  10. Re:TiVo and dual tuners on The Programmer Who Could Save Tivo · · Score: 2, Informative

Most modern TV's have multiple inputs and you can watch one program and record another for about 5 dollars at radio shack.

What I have done with mine is I put a splitter on my cable line before it reaches the Tivo Box. Now I have two coaxial cables that both carry cable for one TV. Run one into your TV's coaxial cable input and run the other into Tivo. Then take your yellow video cable and red and white audio cables that come out of Tivo and plug them into a second input jack on your TV.

Now on your main TV input you have your plain old cable(without movie channels:( ) and on input1 you have Tivo with everything your cable box descrables. I agree it's not the best solution but it's super easy and I use it all the time.

  13. Did anyone happen to see the jury makeup? on Gaiman v. McFarlane Decision Handed Down · · Score: 3, Informative

I noticed in one of the links that the jury was made up of all women. Now I know it's a stereotype that girls don't like comics as much as boys but Mcfarlane's lawyer couldn't have been happy about that.

Then they are quoting comic books during the trial :)

In his closing statement, Gaimans' attorney said the case was about "keeping promises, being fair... and telling the truth."
McFarlane's lawyer's closing argument referred again to Gaiman's statement in the script to SPAWN #9: "It's your playground; I'm in for an afternoon on the swings."

    Seemed funny to me.
