  1. I don't get it on Worlds Largest Computer Party, In Progress · · Score: 1

What's the male/female ratio here, like 5000:1? and the smell of 5000 youngsters, this place will have to reek something fierce, so what's the attraction here? Sure, 5000+/- computers on a Gbit line is pretty kewl, but so is the Blue Ridge Parkway if you haven't been before.

  3. Online reviews on Ethics and Video Game Reviews · · Score: 4, Insightful

Unless you know the reviewer personally, never trust a reviewer that may have a conflict of interest, even Consumer Reports. Online reviews such as those at imdb.com, amazon.com, etc.. are usually the best for me. Newspapers prove this point best, it's not just the news anymore, too many (not all) writers spin the news to further their cause.

  4. Re:Are most internships unpaid then? on The Internship That Students Drool Over · · Score: 1

MS is similar to Enron in this respect, hire employees that can be loyal (by pay, perks, etc..) and after they sell out to you, they will sell out anyone to see your (their) company succeed. MS is doing better than Enron as far as I can tell since they're still in business and didn't rip off their employees 401k accounts.

  5. Are these security problems intended? on Another Critical Microsoft Hole · · Score: 1

These last few MS security holes have stated that XP isn't vulnerable. Per chance did MS in their infinite wisdom/corruption plan this? Seems like a good strategy if you're into that sorta thing.

  6. 2 Words: Microsoft DirectPC on Satellite Internet Service for Macs? · · Score: 1

All of the orbiting satellites are actually owned by Microsoft. I'm endgangering myself by actually revealing this to you all, but I feel that this information yearns to be free.

The way around this is to actually buy a new PC with MS on it, plug it into the satellite and share the internet connection. Tada!!

My brother & sister's son has been using this setup for over a year now.

  7. Re:wk2 still has a lot of life left. on Windows 2000 - Nine Months to Live · · Score: 1

Of course these apps are still great, but for me, w2k and o2k are as good as it needs to get. If MS writes any new functionality, 90% of users will never use it. Heck, 90% of users only use 10% of these products' potential as it is.

But, say you do stick with 97 or 2k apps, and your main client moves to XP or beyond, you know you'll have compatibility issues. I've already faced this with 95 & 2k apps and this sucks, telling a client that you can't read their documents because you don't have the latest & greatests, etc... Wouldn't you have to at least have one install of this MS crap to be able to read incoming stuff?

Thanks alot for posting this, I'm getting a headache just thinking about the future.

  8. 10 missing or abducted children in the last month. on Tragedy, Media and Marketing · · Score: 2, Informative

This should help drive the point home, 10 children in the last month are missing or have been abducted in the last month per The National Center for Missing or Exploited Children. http://www.ncmec.org/ 44 total are missing, including the runaways. I've only heard of the kid from Milwaukee and Salt Lake City, and nothing about the 5+ in my state that are listed.

  9. Give users the choice to opt out on FTC Tells Search Engines to Disclose Paid Links · · Score: 1

If yahoo and the like would let users set options to where the user has to opt out of this to get the best search results, they'd probably be able to get away with it. Of course that'll raise more trouble with user tracking and still won't fix the trouble with internet novices not knowing that they can turn this option off and get valid search results. Maybe we should all just use google.

I'm a professional contractor in commercial/industrial construction. My dream is to someday build a home for my family, but my wife won't have anything to do with this based on how much time this will take away from my career and family. If I build a great garage first, then she'll reconsider, but I'll have to manage my time much better than I am now.

  12. use a spreadsheet on Standards and Tools for Computer Network Diagrams? · · Score: 1

There's no reason that I've seen to physically diagram a network, if you have to differentiate subnets in different states/countries on different connections, then do so in your spreadsheet. The hard part is gathering the hostnames, hard coded ip's and etc, but when something does go wrong, you'll be the better for having it. I've used this on 4 different projects over the past 6 years, and I've learned things and added things each time.

Good luck in mapping your network.

  13. Re:Warn the good folks there, then bail on Where Should Company Loyalty End? · · Score: 1

I agree to warn the good folks, but don't tell too many. I recently left what I felt was a dying company and after one interview, I found a great new job. To find out who my friends were, I told about 5 people that I was planning on leaving, but I told each one of them a different key detail. I now have 4 good friends and one acquaintance. As far as company loyalty goes, what has this company done for you? Do you work outrageous hours without any gratitude? Does everyone there complain about being understaffed and overbearing management? Take care of number one, which is yourself and your family. Good Luck
