2 The time periods dealt with are in the region of 3 generations.

  9. The problem with paying for online music on Time to Face the Music · · Score: 2, Interesting

There is one main problem to subscription based models. The record companies complain the loudest about losing money on the pop-scene. As the article suggests, jazz, classical and non-mainstream genres are doing okay and the imply (rightly so?) because they are aimed at a more affluent, older crowd.

So they want kids, to buy the mainstream pop stuff right? However, all the subscription services require, you guessed it, a credit card. How about this for an idea. You sell the equivalent of prepaid phone cards at b&m locations (7-11, grocery stores etc) and that buys you X amount of songs.

If you price that at about 50 cents a song or so, you probably can get kids to buy the cards. This is especially true, if I could get high quality, fast access, etc.

I must add to the conditions, no copy protection.

People will pay! You could even encourage people to buy cds online (or offline) using these cards. You could include the cards in CDs for promotional value.

One last thing, before P2P, I used to buy around 6 cds a year (this was at my cd buying height) so far this year I have purchased 4. I am pretty sure I will be adding one more on July 8th with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's latest effort.

I pretty much have maintained the same purchase rate CDs.

Online downloading is more about convenience than anything else.

  13. Re:yup on RIAA, This Is Earth, Please Come In! · · Score: 1

Recording off of the radio requires comparitively greater effort than does pirating mp3's. While pirating, you can do a quick search and find what you are looking for on demand, whereas you need to "hunt and trap" what you are trying to find on the radio.

So let me get this straight, the reason why it is not as immoral is because you have to work harder to do it? So I guess by that logic, if you kill someone with a gun that is extremely immoral but if were to slit your victim's wrist and let the blood ooze out slowly, it is somehow less immoral because it took longer?

No doubt the RIAA sees it like this. They only raise objections when it becomes convenient to pirate.

They realize that taking a hardline with people taping a song off the radio will get them no where (ie people feel they are entitled to do that, much like taping a tv show).

The Middle East is backwater. Where have you been? Iraq is one of the more moderate (religiously) countries along with having a precious natural resource.

Great things can, and probably will, come to Iraq.

Not only that, (here is where I step out on to a limb) after several years of Iraqi democratic rule it will inspire other Middle Eastern countries to attempt coups(probably with the help of covert US operations). The Israel peace proccess gets a bump from Palestinians who realize they have been led by murderers and thugs. They rise up, implement democracy and a palestinian state is formed.

Soon, dictatorships start falling left and right.

Sure, this might be extremely optimistic, and the more cynical among us will be quick to trash this as some idealistic rant, but truly believe this will happen (maybe not quite the way I layed it out) in 50-60 years.

I believe our grandchildren will think of Iraq the way we ("we" if you are a babyboomlet) think of Japan.
