We need to GET RID of this optical medium shit that is easily destroyed.

If you are careful with the media and the media is not junk in the first place you shouldn't have many problems. Sure, the media is not nearly as robust as other alternatives but if you stick your discs in cases when they are not in use and don't leave them in extreme heat/cold then you shouldn't have many discs get "easily destroyed".

We will be rid of optical media only if a replacement comes along that is just as cheap and easy to transport. I can mail/hand someone 8.5GB on a DVD+R DL and the media would only be about $1. I can put the disc into a cheap DVD case, put that in a CD/DVD mailer and mail it off for $2 at the most for the case/media. Optical media makes it very easy to transport a decent amount of data to someone quickly and extremely cheaply and nearly every modern computer has a CD/DVD drive so the person getting the media should have no problem reading the data. It also is great to use to get somewhat large amounts of data to a location that does not have any internet/network connection.

Another benefit is since the media is so cheap, you don't have to worry about needing to get the discs back from whoever they are given to. I can give someone ~100GB using a stack of 12 DVD+R DL's for a few bucks and who cares what happens to the discs after the person is done using them. If I gave the person a hard disk instead they would need to get it back to me or else I would be out quite a bit of money relatively speaking.

What other media can you do the same with so cheaply? The answer is none.

The temperature here is 110+f most of the year, so walking even just 100 meters results in a person being drenched in sweat. I cannot show up to work drenched in sweat and then proceed to not shower (since the nearest shower is back at my home) and stink up my office. Do you think people in Siberia who live more than a mile from work are lazy to not walk/run/bike when it is winter time and they have subzero temperatures? That is about the same thing we have here except with heat.

Face it, it is just too hot here to bike to work unless you have access to shower facilities where you are employed and that is not common at all. The nearest shower I have access to would be located back at my house, so that is not a feasible option. Fix that problem for me, maybe this outsourced problem to be solved will actually return with an answer that is not laughable like the last reply or more likely you will not have an answer and then should just admit defeat like a man.

Here in the US I have never worked anywhere that had shower facilities and the only places I have heard that have them are some of the larger employers. So your quick fix of showering at work isn't viable for the majority of people is my guess.

Also, I live in Arizona (Phoenix area) where we don't have much humidity but for most of the year the temperture is in triple digits and when it is 110-120 out biking will leave you DRENCHED in sweat. Last year I rode my bike to work almost every day since it was only about 1.5 miles, but now that I bought a house about 5 miles away there will be almost no more biking for me. It is just too hot, too dangerous (the drivers here are INSANE), and if I did ride to work the nearest shower I would have access to would be located 5 miles away... at my house. That analogy is flawed since electricity is metered and most internet access in the US (at least at the consumer level which this would affect the most) is not. Most "normal" internet usage such as checking email and browsing some websites would NOT end up costing the person who is paying for the internet connection more money at ALL. Running an extension cord is completely different since you would first have to trespass on the homeowners property and then if you plugged something into it you would actually be costing them money. If you just ran the extension cord but didn't plug anything into it then that would be a closer analogy and all you would be guilty of is trespassing.

I think a better analogy (that works for metered as well as unmetered internet access) would be if your neighbor decided to keep a hose constantly running on the edge of his property right next to yours and you decided to rig up a system to store the runoff water that comes on your property to water your plants with it would not be illegal. The neighbor is freely allowing the "goods" to cross his property lines, if he doesn't want you to benefit from that then he needs to fix how he has things setup.

My guess is that this law was most likely pushed by ISP's who want everyone to pay them their monthly fee's and want to prevent people from freely sharing internet access. Like usual it sounds like it is all about the money.

Still, whether the disc is CD or DVD does not matter with regard to "repainting" the metal layer. CD-R/DVD+-R's both have the reflective metal layer directly adhered to the organic dye which means if you lose one you lose the other and recovery will be impossible for that portion of the disc. The rest of the disc should still be readable although it might require some specialized hardware to do so since a normal drive might not go into the ready state with the damaged disc.

The organic layer is connected to the aluminum layer so you either lose both layers or none and any portion that are lost or damaged will lose all of that data completely. This is a reason why it is MUCH more dangerous to damage the top part of a recordable CD/DVD because if you scratch the bottom of a disc then you can usually buff the scratch out and the disc is like new. However, if you scratch the TOP of the disc (don't use regular pens on discs!) then any area that has the coating scratched off has just lost a lot of data which will never be able to be recovered.

I mean how many parents out there will buy the high definition version of Disney movies for their kids when the regular DVD is cheaper and the kids will like it just as much? I would guess that what most people with HD-DVD and/or Blu-Ray players who have kids are doing is sticking with buying regular DVD's for the kids movies and using the money saved from doing so to buy the HD versions of non-kid and non-Disney movies that they like instead. I don't have any kids but if I did I know that is what I would be doing. Why spend $25+ on a blu-ray Disney movie when you can get 5 or more Disney movies on regular DVD on sale or used for the same amount of money? The kids will enjoy having more movies to watch and they won't notice a difference anyway (or at least won't care about the difference) so at least to me that makes more sense.

I just don't think Disney being Blu-Ray exclusive matters that much at this point in time. In fact, I would say that the price of the players will have a MUCH larger effect on who wins the war than Disney being Blu-Ray exclusive. Maybe if they let him HEAR the answers (since Kerry said he wanted to answer the students questions) to his questions this whole thing would have turned out to be nothing. Anyway, yeah the kid was obnoxious but he was NOT violent or a threat to anyone and only should have been tazered if he had shown threat of violence. The only "lashing out" he did was to get the officers hands off him so he could stand up and listen to the answers to his questions.

The kid really is lucky. After the first swing on an officer (you can see it before he gets taken down) the officers could have clubbed him. As far as I could see the police were all very well behaved.

He never swung at any of the officers, what he did was throw his arms up to break the hold they had on him. There is a HUGE difference between taking a swing at an officer and flailing around trying to get loose. I agree the officers seemed to be behaved until of course the tazering occurred.

They tried to talk him down. They tried to escort him peacefully. When he resisted escort they restrained him. When he broke free of his restraining officers they restrained him with a couple bigger officers. When he broke free again and started lashing out at officers they took him down to the floor. Then on the floor he kept kicking and lashing out as they tried to talk him down. All of the violence was initiated by this punk.

Both sides are at fault but I still think they should have just let Kerry answer the student and then if the student didn't shut up they could have escorted him out. At one point the student even said he would leave if they let him up, did they do that? No, they tazered him instead and charged him with a felony, that is a crock of shit.

I am a huge proponent for free speech, but he was preventing others from having a chance to speak and provoking the police at every turn. He might even have been paid to create an incident, but it appears the incident was all his fault. He will have a fine, and his "resisting arrest" could get him time if any of those officers were hurt. They were just trying to do their job and this nutjob attacks them. How would you like to have their job? You are being polite as possible and you get attacked by a screaming lunatic who shoves your friend and then nails you in the head with a wild swing.

Don't sign up for a job you know is going to have you deal with people such as this if you will be bothered by it. The guy NEVER ATTACKED THE COPS you moron. If anything it was the cops who initiated the arms flailing around by trying to restrain him before Kerry answered his questions.

Those policemen and women did a damn fine job. I am sorry that he had to be tasered, but when several policemen are having trouble restraining someone who is lashing out there are very few choices left.

Those policemen and women should be investigated and punished for what happened. Especially the one who actually tazered the kid. The kid was already subdued by about 6 cops, tazering was not needed and to me it looks like they only did it to get him to shut up. He was not a threat (do you see anyone around him taking off running scared?) and should not have been tazered. The only time anyone in the audience seemed scared was when the poor guy got tazered.

What a shitty thing to happen on the anniversary of the Constitution getting signed. Someone at a political Q&A session is not allowed to ask questions and hear the answers to his questions and ends up getting tazered and charged with a felony. This is a sad day indeed.
