I've seen Brazil, it's like 90% illegal. As in the houses, utilities, economy. Rio has an unlicensed bus system by a loose affiliation of van-owners that is way more popular than the official one. There is not a single law there that a majority of the population obeys.

I've gone to a smartphone run as a wifi-only SIP VOIP phone, it works where there is wifi (many places) and costs nothing. Cellular service in the U.S. is hopeless.
I canceled service with ATT and use my iPhone as a SIP VOIP phone wherever there is Wifi. It's working ok for me, don't really need to be connected all the time, but if I do I'll get a prepaid data plan. Smartphone(iPhone 3G)+SIP client(Groundwire)+SIP service(Callcentric)+Google Voice(free local phone number and visual voicemail) is a rather good, almost free phone/data plan. I use an OBISoft device to hook another Google voice number through the phone lines in my house, so normal home phones (comfortable and inexpensive) work as VOIP phones. All I pay for is an internet connection at home and a small bit for SIP service. Ultimately I expect that to become unnecessary as well.

The assumption that redshift of distant objects indicates they are moving away at near light-speed, along with the assumption that matter cannot travel faster than light, are the basis for the Big Bang Theory. I find our current method of radio communication extremely inefficient. A signal much stronger than necessary for a decent antenna and signal processor is broadcast in all directions hoping to be heard by one or many devices. It's the electromagnetic equivalent of everyone shouting straight up in the air whether they are talking to their neighbor or the guys over the hill. A properly calibrated signal isn't heard much beyond the intended recipient. I expect that a much better form of communication will be discovered shortly, and we will realize we were monitoring the wrong signals. Either that or we find that nearly every signal is meaningful.
I'm all for it. Recorded music fails to capture the live experience, which is the only standard to use in a "blind" listening test. I love classical and jazz, but can't stand it off a digital system. All of these tests just compare one recording method to another, they're pitting one imitation against another and arguing over which is the better imitation, without any reference to what was real.
