  1. Not impressed with answers.com on Google Local, Definitions, & Registrar · · Score: 0, Redundant

It's yet another straight rip-off of Wikipedia that adds adverts. Why on earth didn't they just link straight to Wikipedia? Oh yes, that's right, answers.com uses Google text ads so they make a profit there. Grrr.

  2. Or it could mean on Google Rewards Employees With Millions · · Score: 1

That it's restricted ownership. Perhaps the stock is of the "category A" type that only a few people got on Google's IPO - which carries 10x the voting rights of normal stock. Either way, I think it's a superb idea to reward brilliance.

  3. As others here have pointed out... on Lexus Computers Infected Via Bluetooth · · Score: 1

Cabir/Caribe is not a virus. It is a Trojan. As with all other Symbian "viruses" that have been released so far, the user must deliberately run it to infect themselves. It will never be possible to fully protect anything running on any operating system from this sort of attack.

There have as yet been no vulnerabilities in Symbian OS discovered that would allow for the spread of actual viruses or worms. Which I think is pretty damn good compared to other operating systems.

  4. The moral of the story is on American Airlines Information Gathering · · Score: 1

Never, *never* change flights in the US if you can possibly avoid it. It's an absolute pain in the arse. As you state, the security people have no concept of the idea of "transit"; you have to enter the country and then leave again. I particularly liked the way I had to grab my baggage off the carousel and dump it (in an unsecured corner!) to be picked up and taken on the outgoing flight.

  5. My American Airlines experience on American Airlines Information Gathering · · Score: 5, Interesting

I've flown to the US (from the UK) with several different airlines, and I have to say that American Airlines gave me far more hassle than the others. My favourite bit was when I was travelling with a friend, and they separated us when we checked in to ask us questions like how long we'd known each other, how we met, etc. What did they think I was likely to say? "Well, we met at a terrorists' convention in 1998..."?

Have you tried to send a GMail bug report to Google? It's really difficult! I tried it and whatever software they have to automatically scan bug reports kept misclassifying what I was saying. I gave up in the end; for a product in beta, they don't seem very keen to get feedback.

  11. Re:I disagree about Starship Troopers on 'Bourne' Director to take on Watchmen · · Score: 1

Heinlein seems to be proposing a military dictatorship that looks a lot like Fascism as the best form of government. It's arguable that he is actually talking about democracy - just a form of democracy where only veterans are allowed to vote - but the way his society seems to be run, it seems pretty Fascist to me. For example, he says:

"Whether it is exerted by ten men or ten billion, political authority is force."

  12. I disagree about Starship Troopers on 'Bourne' Director to take on Watchmen · · Score: 1

The original book was - supposedly - an outlet for Heinlein's theories about why Fascist government was a Good Thing. The film took that premise and mocked it in a number of subtle ways:

    - the white, American population of Buenos Aires
    - the over-the-top, jingoistic commercial breaks
    - the interspersion of "how great it is to be a soldier" stuff with people being brutally slaughtered
    - etc.

So even though it doesn't follow the book exactly, I still think it's a great movie. And it's good with beer and popcorn too.

  13. Petition against UK ID cards on Supermarket Loyalty Cards Vs National ID Cards · · Score: 1

The UK pressure group NO2ID have set up an online petition to be delivered to the Government. UK residents who oppose compulsory ID cards should consider signing it (it closes tomorrow, by the way!).

Those who don't oppose ID cards should read some of the Register's excellent coverage of the issue and be very afraid.

I don't speak Arabic, but there's a bit at the bottom where he says:

"In conclusion, I tell you in truth, that your security is not in the hands of Kerry, nor Bush, nor al-Qaida."

This doesn't sound like an endorsement of Kerry to me. And looking at al-Jazeera's full transcript - which is apparently based on the subtitles that were on the original video - I can't see anything that threatens "nations that stand with Bush" anyway.

  15. Full transcript of bin Laden's video on Pre-Election Discussion · · Score: 3, Informative

Nobody will read this, because there are already over 1700 comments on this story. But there's now an - apparently - complete transcript of the full 16 minutes of bin Laden's recent video available on al-Jazeera's website.

There's some interesting content that doesn't feature in the shorter transcripts. And (more interestingly for me) - this was released at 1pm GMT today. Why are the major media sites not covering it?

(NB: moderators, this is clearly relevant to the US election :)

  16. "Iranian puppet"? on 100,000 Civilians Dead in Iraq · · Score: 1

I'd like to see some evidence for this claim, please. Al-Sadr is an Iraqi, and his authority comes from his Iraqi cleric father.

And as for the "foreign terrorists" - there weren't any in Iraq before it became a lawless hellhole, but now there are plenty of fundamentalists trying to set up a theocracy! I look forward to the elections being staged so a "democratic" candidate wins, instead of the hard-liner that (sadly) the majority of the people would vote for.

Almost every computer science degree involves some kind of group or individual project. Just imagine the amount of free software that could be produced if all of these projects were released as open source.
