You can build cocoa applications using the apple development tools that are native. Plus, the jvm on apple runs faster than any other platform I've tested on (linux, windows, solaris, os 9, os x).
Okay I'm listening to NPR on the way to work this morning and I hear an interview with the girl. She says "I was just standing there and got hit on the foot with this meteor, so I bent down and picked it up."
Okay let me be the 1000th person to screem BULLSHIT. First off a fucking meteor would be a tad hot to the touch and second off she would have heard it like an incoming bomb so it's unlikely that she would be just standing still, it's more likely she would be looking around for the source of the sound (like when a jet flies buy and you look for it).
I guess the main difference is in rendering multiple windows. Since I'm giving my old G3-333 to my little brother (in law) so he can do some software development (java/cocoa with interface builder) for me and learn/get paid in the process (and I can have someone to bounce mac os x development off of, even though he has a long way to go at 16 years old).
Artifacts on what PCI card? The Radeon 7000? I've got an old G3-333 that i installed os x 10.2 on and it runs as fast (exception is the UI) as my G4-733 running 10.1 (so it is significantly faster than 10.1). And I was planning on buying a ATI Radeon PCI 7000 for it (and the Quartz Extreme) but if it doesn't work I'm not going to waste the money.
Try asking your mom/grandmother if they've heard of StarOffice or WordPerfect. That is your answer.
WordPerfect Office is freaking $5 to OEM's. That is close enough to free (hell they may be getting it for free, that wouldn't hurt Corel either since no one is buying it anyway).
It's all about maximizing revenue. Oh and BTW the Word in works is stripped down (less templates, clipart, etc) and there is no comparing excel, access, outlook and powerpoint (oh yeah and publisher) to MS works (oxymoron if i've ever seen one) tools. And since when does a company care about saving their customers money? they only care about saving themselves money.
you're stuck with their OS. If you don't like RedHat there are 5-10 other good vendors OR you can make your own distribution.
Personally I think Apple is more like MS than RedHat. Seriously, look at the financials (for example): MSFT 40billion in cash 90% of market AAPL 4billion in cash 4-5% of market RHAT 0billion in cash 1% of market
Apple is just a smaller scale monopoly than micosoft. Don't think for a minute if Apple were in the drivers seat that you could tell the difference between Microsoft of today. That being said, Linux is the true O/S with choice. And that is what makes RedHat NOT Redmond of linux.
BTW I love Linux, Apple (OS X), and Windows (not a fan of solaris however).
"Linux will not be able to take over the PC desktop" is the best part of your post.
I have tried to run Linux as a desktop system since 1996 and have never been completely satisfied. The day I bought my G4 with OS X 10.1.5 is the day Linux died on the desktop for me. I can ssh/sftp to my servers (linux/solaris) and use wonderful apps that are unmatched on linux (Photoshop, Acrobat-Full, InDesign, FlashMX, Office-waiting for StarOffice).
Linux is 10 years behind OS X and I cannot wait for my 10.2 upgrade to come in the mail (thank god I waited to get my G4 until the 17th).

This only works for going forward, not backward in time. Going forward is easy (as the article says when you're on a jet) going backward is the hard part (and in all likelihood impossible for us).
Who knows maybe you could run it in conjunction with QMail on Mac since darwin is bsd based I'm sure compiling it wouldn't be too difficult. Although getting everything configured on my end for the first time was more difficult than I anticipated.
BTW I switched all my servers from windows to linux/x86 (except the db went from windows to solaris/sparc). Exchange is what made me change. When I was reading a help file that said "It is frequently advisable to backup and reinstall Exchange Server instead of wasting days looking for some buried setting that conflicts with your setup." That was the end. And I was about to buy 2000 Server, SQL Server and Exchange 2000 (since that was what I was familiar with from my job). All unix based now and no problems since the first week (accidently left wuftp port open and unpatched).
Linux and Solaris kick the rear out of Windows. Now when 9i is ready for XServe I'll definately consider it (maybe when they get the DDR fixed or move to G5's). But for the time being Solaris/SPARC is good enough for me.
to restock. I just bought an Apple Airport Card and they informed me if the box is open it's 10%.
Personally it makes sense to me. I mean have you ever purchased anything from an online store (say fucking buy.com) and when you open your *new* product it's fucked up (ie someone else already crammed the shit back into the box)? Then you email their support and they simply ignore you (note: buy.com avoid at all costs).
They ship the piece back and it is given a once over. In all likelihood it costs apple a lot more than 10% to do this. If you actually ran a company and sold products (hardware) you might be able to understand this. If not go back to asking if they would like fries with that.
Once you use it for about a month Linux seems very immature and the GUI is far superior to Gnome/KDE/Enlightenment. Plus it has ssh sftp... all built in so nothing to even install to get to my Linux servers. Don't get me wrong I love linux, it just has a million miles to go to catch up to OS X on the desktop, plus os x has better apps > flash, quicktime, photoshop, illustrator,...
The cost is not that great (as long as you use a monitor through vga instead of the adc connections) and if you desire a 3 button mouse simply buy one (I did > MS Optical has drivers for OS8.6+ and OS X).
Go look on eBay and get a used one to try it out, just give it a chance and go in with an open mind (like all you Linux users expect windows users to do).
I use mac os x for my everyday stuff but all my servers run linux (free == I can afford it) with the exception of my db server which is a sparc with solaris 8 and oracle 8i.
OS X is by far the best Total OS offering by any company out there. It's rock solid (I've yet to crash it in 3 months) and the GUI beats the shit out of Gnome/KDE/Enlighenment...
Jaguar is going to be great (although my G4 Tower is smoking fast).

cd's have been intentionally made shitty to avoid the copying of perfect quality. I fucking hate the greedy people in this country. No wonder it's going to hell in a handbasket.
BTW in the install you cannot bypass the reqirements (framework). The framework that shipped with VS.Net (original shipping version) is a piece of shit. We got it at work in the MDSN subscription and had nothing but problems.
So, as I stated the workaround is to install the framework NOT from the VS.Net disks but from WindowsUpdate first, then the service pack from windowsupdate, THEN VS.Net.
BTW We do.Net development at my current place of employment. I was just frustrated to run into the same problems at home (having spent $465 on it with my own money).

Go by your local apple store and notice there is no fan on their heatsink for the dual G4 1.25GHz Tower.
I love linux but switching to Mac (not to be a commercial or anything) was the best move I've ever made. It's like Linux with a decent GUI and excellent applications not available for linux (Photoshop, Flash MX, Dreamweaver MX,...)
Server side: Linux (x86) & Solaris (SPARC) Client side: OS X (PPC) & Windows (x86)
Until you've used OS X you have no idea what you're missing (assuming you go in with an open mind). Plus you can get a G4 for 800 to 1200 on eBay right now.
My G4 Tower runs at 733MHz and I have not noticed any serious speed difference between that computer and my Athlon XP 1330MHz (1500+).
Although I just bought VS.Net and the damn thing wont install on Windows! Lol, by MS for MS (Won't run on MS).
If anyone else has this problem here is the solution: Go to windows update and install the.net framework FIRST. Then install the service pack (2 now i think). Then install the software it'll work fine.
Piece of shite MS QA. I thought they were supposed to be a professional development shop?
the exact opposite is true. Apache was declining by 3% and MS/IIS grew by 5%. Remember it is a sample not all servers out there.

You've got to look at the improvements. So you're saying the UNIX of today is the same as 30 years ago? Right.
It's just like (to use another car analogy) when Ford released the *new* Thunderbird. Yes it has been around for 40+ years and yes it IS NEW!
Amazing how some people cannot seem to catch on that things can be modified into something new.
