I don't know if this will help you (I haven't yet gotten the chance to install Cygwin on my Windows network) but there is a command line app that will change resolution. I'm not sure if you can call it from a ssh shell or not. I use it in a login (batch) script for a lab to always ensure that the screen is a certain resolution when the user starts their machine.

It's called QRes, and it's BSD licensed. Maybe it can help you out: http://qres.sf.net/

There's a setup file which produces some GUI app I've never used, and then a qres32.dll and qres.exe, if I'm not mistaken.

I'd be interested in hearing more of what you're doing, as I've been beginning to work along those same lines (NIX-ifying my WinBoxen) at my work. Drop me a line at billysanders at gmail.

This isn't racism on anyone's part so lets not try to sensationalize it that way.

Thats some excellent spin... but my only question is this: Who's actually wanting a blu-ray player? Everyone I've talked to (geek and non-geek alike) is most definitely not planning on buying an HDTV *and* all new BRD movies for a marginally better picture. And even if everyone owned a HDTV and didn't mind buying new discs, it *still* has to compete with HD-DVD.

All of the cards require PCI express and consume extreme amounts of power requiring motherboards and PSU less than a year old!

This is simply not true. I built a system well over a year and a half ago that had PCIe onboard, and the motherboard was probably about $150.

And I also just saw one at Fry's for $40 last weekend.

I'm confused by all the PCIe complainers out there. PCIe has a *huge* advantage over AGP, and its pretty obvious at this point that that is where the market is headed. And it's easy to find very reasonable budget cards and motherboards.

Slightly off topic - has anyone found any PCIe sound cards yet? I have a mATX board that is using its only pci slot, and linux doesn't have drivers for the onboard sound yet, the only slot available is the PCIe 1x on the motherboard.

This I believe is one of the key differences between programmers and computer scientists. I would simply love to see something with the complexity of sshd or sendmail written in Haskell, Lisp, Scheme, or whatever the current interpreted language is en vogue. Seriously, show me the code! Benchmark some enterprise-level (as in, used in businesses, not the buzzword) non-trivial app (like the aforementioned) written in C/C++ compared to it's interpreted counterpart. I would be incredibly surprised if Apache, Mozilla, Word, whatever would run with anywhere near the speed or responsiveness.

Your opinion (which you are of course entitled to) ignores things like Operating Systems, embedded devices, and even the runtimes/interpreters/virtual machines themselves. And then who is going to maintain this code? Haskell and friends don't have anywhere near the mindshare that C/C++/Java have. You're right.. in theory, using C is terrible, but in reality the other options are worse for different reasons.
