Well, the EAL4 certification is only just a bunch of paperwork. It certifies that the company who got it, did a lot of paperwork describing what the product does to be secure and _no_ check, in whatever kind, is made by the goverment to certify that the claims are indeed true. Also, the claims that need to be made are really trivial and almost all s/w vendors can claim conformity. There is no point comparing security of win2k and linux based on that cert...
the darn thing took on the order of 5 seconds just to focus
If you hold the shutter button half way down, the camera will do the auto* things it has to do and just wait there to take the actual photo. This means, you will be able to take a photo with minimal delay (<< 1sec, but don't expect it to be instant), with just a little bit of preparation, provided that the distance/lighting conditions won't change much.
For most people this little trick makes their point and shoot crap^Wcamera perfect:)
If GIMP supported adjustment layers, it would be possible to rotate and non-proportionally scale text by attaching adjustment layers to text.
You have to wait for gimp 3.0 for that to happen. It's a general issue and not a text tool specific one.
If you don't want to just wait, you can help in the development:)
Unfortunately, there isn't a formal roadmap at the moment for gimp 2.4, but you can find a lot of info about what you should expect from gimp 3.0. Look here and search google for more.
What's the problem with text layer tools? Everyone seems very happy with them and you shouldn't expect a change anytime soon...
Most people don't really need it, but more than 8-bit per pixel color is coming soon. Next release (2.4) will add color management capabilities and the one after that (3.0), planned for the next fall, will add higher bit depth, layer effects and pretty much everything you want (all that because of the GEGL library intergration).
I wonder if adobe has already put some form of id on the images photoshop creates, so criminals could be located.
It sounds very much like something adobe would do (even if it wasn't asked by anyone:>)
Gimp lacks cmyk support not because of patent issues, but because of the extensive changes that need to be done in the core. Gimp was originally designed for RGB and that proves to be a problem now, but GEGL is coming to solve this and pretty much every other design issue gimp has (ex. higher bit depths and layer effects)
Some cmyk conversion algorithms have patent issues, but that's not the point at the moment...
Also, gimp clutters up the task bar, which makes it harder to switch applications, and means that when you want to switch to gimp you will have to click each of the gimp taskbar buttons instead of clicking just one.
Having a shitty window manager with a non functional taskbar isn't really an excuse for not using gimp. If you decide to use a better WM you will see that all gimp windows will be grouped in the taskbar.
And a hint. If you hit tab in the image window all other gimp dock windows will dissapear. Hitting tab again will put them back in place.
There is a plugin for gimp that puts a window behind all gimp windows and make all of them behave like one. I don't know why anyone would like to do this, but you can check http://registry.gimp.org for the gimp deweirdifier plugin (something like that, registry is down at the moment and I can't check it).
If google was Microsoft, they would have bought citeseer and everyone (in the citeseer company) would be happy. Now, who do you like best, MS or Google?
Google news have the potential to make a LOT of money, but not directly. Once you are addicted to them for getting your news, they can mix up the news sources in whatever way they seem fit. Of course every newspaper or magazine can misinform you and all of them do it, but in the case of google, the other newspaper you will read for getting a second opinion will be what google chose! Having the power to tell people what to read, is a GREAT power. Before you know it, google news will elect the next president of the US.

Well, windows are very well known to crash when you have more than 2-3 programs running, so I expect this edition to be the most stable windows ever sold. The cheapest too...

It's obvious, he wants to be in the payroll of Microsoft and stop working for them for free. All these years of hard work should be rewarded!

Of course there is a way. It's called laptop_mode kernel patch and 2.6 kernel has it (also, the 2.4 kernel from fedora 1, has it). If you have that, then you mess a little with/proc/sys/vm/bdflush and with hdparm you set the drive to spin down every 20 seconds or so and you are ready to go!
I have an IBM T41 which runs for about 3 hours normally and for almost 4 hours if I spin the drive down with this way.
Also, cat *ogg >/dev/null before playing oggs, helps a LOT!

Gimp Hits 2.0

It's coming! From a really recent post of Sven Neumann to gimp-user list: "GIMP 2.0 comes with a color proof display filter that uses ICC color profiles to simulate a proof on your monitor. Support for such filters is new in 2.0 and for the future it is planned to integrate display filter modules better into the workflow."

It really isn't that easy. For CMYK to be usefull you have to implement ICC profiles and do the conversion between RGB and CMYK based on them. It's not impossible to do, but gimp needs some fairly major changes for supporting it. Call them "GEGL (http://www.gegl.org) completion" and "Intergration of gegl into gimp".
BTW, if you really need CMYK support in gimp now, you may look at http://www.blackfiveservices.co.uk/separate.shtml . It is a really nice plugin and gimp won't match its functionality for a long time (full CMYK support in gimp is planned to be complete sometime in spring 2005...).
You need CMYK? CODE it or PAY someone to do it for you. Open source is not about getting stuff for free, but giving and receiving.
How do you think you are going to help things by buying some commersial software?
step 1) Register a domain
step 2) Make the webmaster@yourdomain.com email account
step 3) Watch the spam flowing...
This way will get you going in no time. No advertisement, no other action from you is needed. Of course if you view the html spam mails, reply and follow their links you will have much much better results.
The decision last week that ruled the Greek ban on video games as unconstitutional has been overturned, and a new trial has been ordered.
Well, that is not accurate. The decision of the court hasn't been overturned! The case will just move to the appeals court and we will see what happens there. The only court in Greece which is allowed a final decision on a subject, which can't be overturned by someone else, is the supreme court. So, until the case comes to the supreme court, it isn't closed.

While we are at it, I meant:
s/pixel/channell/
s/layer effects/adjustment layers/
You have to wait for gimp 3.0 for that to happen. It's a general issue and not a text tool specific one. :)
If you don't want to just wait, you can help in the development
Choose the text layer and use the rotate tool.
non-proportional stretching
Use the Scale tool.
placement along a GIMP path
Choose "create path from text" from the text tool options.
Sorry, I thought all these were very intuitive to find...

The pending 2.2 release will add previews for most filters. Unsharp mask included... You can find a list of what's new in this release here.
