I believe the answer is even more simple: All companies that do business within the borders of the United States (including the selling of goods, even if located elsewhere) are required by law to pay *at least* minimum wage at the current US level. This makes it an actual competition for a job; and it's suddenly not as cheap to outsource to other countries.

    **Off Topic**

Interestingly enough, I blame this confusion on "Wired" magazine. In the 70s and early 80s, "Hacker" was someone who hacked at code, changing it etc. Late 80s, early 90s the term morphed to mean "someone who 'hacked' a system. It makes sense, as the people who were 'hacking' systems were following the same sort of intellectual curiosity that their predecesors had with code. During this same time period (80s-early 90s) "crackers" were people who ripped copy protection out of software. Then in '92 I believe, Wired magazine was born and published articles about 'hackers' and 'crackers'. Of course, being journalists(!) instead of technology monkeys, they started confusing and mixing up all of the lingo. Fast forward a few years. They consistently used the "mixed" terminology and a new generation of people came up all confused. Some people have tried to revert to the old style lingo (ESR comes to mind), but the reality is that it's too late as it's been assimilated in to our culture.

    Oh well.

Apologies for the impromtu history lesson.

  5. Re:Not that I expect this to be seen, but... on The Surprising Benefits of Being Unemployed · · Score: 1

I live in Denver as well and I can say with relative authority that the reason so many "techies" are having trouble finding jobs is because their resumes are terrible. I currently run the development department for a financial company and we're building out significantly ( 8 development positions currently open). I have received over 100 resumes in the last month and have done a grand total of 6 interviews, because the resumes SUCK. Blatant lying ("I have 3 years of Visual C# 3.0 Experience") to 50 jobs in 6 months. It's no surprise to me at all that these people can't find jobs. Even if they manage to get an interview, their interview skills are just atrocious.

I'm glad the tech market is depressed. We're weeding out the people who think a couple of years experience with ASP and HTML make them "senior level developers".

Ultimately it's about networking. Work hard, learn everything you can (and stay humble) and keep in touch with everyone you have worked with in the last 5 years. Finding a job isn't about posting a resume to Monster or DICE and then waiting for the calls to come it. It's about pounding the pavement, being creative and learning how to do simple things like writing a good resume and presenting yourself well during an interview.

In effect, there are gate-keepers. Look at the latest fork the FreeBSD. The Core-Dev folks decided that they didn't like Matt Dillion, so they took away his commit bit and refused patches from him. He forked the Code, but not everyone has the desire and will-power to do that. There's a big difference between fixing a bug in spam_n_eggs and branching an entire code base. Short of a miracle, new code from him won't be showing up in the main FreeBSD branch anytime soon. That sounds an aweful lot like a gatekeeper to me.
