The major problem I have with passwords is that we are required to have too many username/password/PIN # combinations. If you want to enforce a strong password requirement, then complement that program with a single-signon system. That way I can throw away this piece of paper sitting on my desk ;->.

  3. Re:How to make money without DRM... on What's The Future of DRM? · · Score: 1

The fact that the Emusic model involves trust and is easier to use than purchasing the physical CD is important to note. I think that the future of DRM technology will be built on this trust/value business model. Copyright owners will need to trust their customers and provide value in some fashion:

    - digital product easily available from legitimate online source
    - digital product marked with a "personalized" watermark
    - physical item shipped with purchase
    - ????

I think that if the distributor is providing some value and does not encumber the consumer with an awkward enforcement scheme, then most consumers will purchase from the distributor.

This is not true. The personal assets of the executives are protected unless they were used as collateral to secure loans. Shareholders get no protection - their entire investment is at risk. Creditors get paid first, then owners. Often a bank will put in executive compensation restrictions when making a small business loan specifically to prevent an owner from bleeding a company dry. If the company goes into bankrupcy court and you are an employee that gets paid AFTER working (you are in the "wages payable" ballance sheet item), you should be entitled to the same "pennies on the dollar" that the other creditors get.

well, I can't seem to get to Dobbs right now. However, there seems to be an eternal ambiguity about exactly what an "IT worker" is. Some sort of distinction should be made between programmers and architects that need a 4 year (or more) degree, admins (that need a 2 year degree), and operators (that can get by with a few months of training).

Somebody has been reading the Harvard Business Review!

I think this situation is a bit easier to handle in a corporate setting. It is true that egos can be just as inflated, but there is always a management structure in place that will eventualy put its foot down (hopefuly with the best interest of the company in mind). I have even seen a company set up two groups to do parallel development of a project with the intention of choosing the best result at the end. Sure the manager of the loosing group will be pissed, but his/her only recourse is to leave the company.

It seems that the general concensus is that for OSS, the package maintainer should:

    1. have a well publicised (and agresive) strategic plan

    2. have an open development environment

    3. manage with the knowlege that the only "boss" is the loyalty of the developers on the project

  13. Re:Vote? If your and ME on Pro/Engineer for Linux Poll · · Score: 1

Actualy, Pro/E was ported to NT when NT was in beta. PTC anounced the availability of Pro/E on NT for Intel, MIPS, and Alpha the same day that NT was anounced. I remember going in to work at 4:30 AM the day before this anouncement to do some last minute testing of some bug fixes!

Recently, the UI has been "modernized" with dialog boxes, etc.. The concept was to take the best of windows UI features and combine them with the menu driven aproach that made Pro/E very eficient and easy to use.

Pro/E has reached about its fullest level of maturity at this point and porting to another platform would be realatively easy. The question is whether or not there is enough demand to justify the cost of supporting it (testing is expensive).

The US was founded on very different principles than the UK. Although the liberty that the US has guaranteed to its citizens causes the potential for certain problems, it has also created an atmosphere where (for the most part), the government lets people (and society) flourish.

Take a look at the US Declaration of Independence, US Constitution, and the Bill of Rights some time.

The only excuse the government has for "firing on us" is if we break the very law that we ourselves have enacted. Our right to bear arms is one tool that we have at our disposal to make sure that this remains true.

  16. actualy a coordinate measuring machine on Lego Mindstorms 3D Plotter · · Score: 1

The device that they have created sounds more like a crude coordinate measuring machine (CMM) than a plotter.

The manufacturing world uses rather expensive CMMs with multi-directional sensing probes to verify tolerances on manufactured parts and assemblies. The probe is usualy computer driven and in sophisticated situations, the probe path is programmed from a CAD model. Use of these machines for "reverse engineering" is not as common as for tolerance verification.

In my previous job, I actualy designed and managed the development of a module for a high-end CAD package to program the probe path from a CAD model. It is still one of the projects I am most proud of. A Swiss watch band manufacturer was one of the customers for this product. I have never seen so much platinum in my life!

    3. significance of news events

The firms get information from many sources including end-user surveys, company briefings, news reports, etc.. As with any source of information, it is important to get to know the people producing the information, compare the information with info from other sources, and season it with your own experience.
