Let's touch on "update turned out to break things for a lot of people". Indeed. Out of all of the OS vendors out there - Apple has it the easiest. They know - for EVERY computer EVER manufactured what (from a hardware perspective) is in that machine. And YET - this bothers me a lot - their "patches" still break things. What the hell?
The hell is that it is always possible for someone to write code that somehow depends on the old code working the way it does, rather than writing it to spec. It's happened to anyone who's programmed for more than five years, particualarly when one has to earn a paycheck with non-IT derived deadlines. That it happens isn't surprising; that it doesn't happen more often amazes me.
In a related story, the Detroit Pistons have been named the Most Fan-Friendly Franschise in pro sports. Who else brings you so close to so much action?
Heck, there was a guy here in Indianapolis named Robin Miller who (allegedly) was doing this thing as a fulltime "respected" journalist. It was when the split in open-wheel racing happened between the CART circuit and the IRL circuit. (Allegedly) Robin was on the CART payroll and making more money from that than for reporting on open wheel racing in the Indianapolis Star. And think about it, most sports people know nothing about open wheel racing, so if they have to make a comment on it, who would they call? How about that guy in Indianapolis who's been covering this forever?
Nothing new. H.L. Mencken wrote about this happening in his early days as a reporter (1899-1905) on the Balitmore Herald. And nothing he said made me believe it was a new phenomenon then.
Now Microsoft's stealing ideas from politicians, too.
Yeah, I was expecting the New York Times to sue bloggers for plagiarizing their business model, but then I remembered that so much of the New York Times is plagiarized to begin with that they wouldn't stand a chance.
Good question.. They already bought VMS and botched it. Be is long gone, so MS has pretty much eliminated their possible saviors. I'm sure it will be interesting to watch it all play out.
They already have BSD's sockets; why not use FreeBSD, too? Heck, they copy everything else that Apple does...
And the Egyptians probably weren't the first, either. I sometimes get this mental picture of one of my ancestors figuring out how to knapp flint tools, only to have a politician's ancestor and a preacher's ancestor use it to gain power and wealth without risk or merit.
I realize that anecdote != scientific data, but I've known quite a few people buy iPods and then, while in The Apple Store for accessories or issues, get a real jones for a Powerbook or iMac. (And there's a reason those 30" displays are drool-proof.)
(Actually, I give Gannett too much credit. Our local rag, and its name is beneath me, is usually far too busy trying to get the Colts to leave for LA, where Gannett owns a larger paper.)
Okay, I will. .... Mm, delicious!
You don't have to; most of them are in Florida already.
But it's pronounced "Throatwarbler Mangrove".

A bitter Pacers fan

Shill!

On the contrary; it's things like this that made my ancestors long for America.
They already have BSD's sockets; why not use FreeBSD, too? Heck, they copy everything else that Apple does ...
Probably because Allen could get better drugs from his players on the Trailblazers.
Good gravy! What on earth do you have to do to get sacked by the government, twice! And how can I trick the head of the FCC into it?
They'll be hunted down by PETA for polluting the oceans.
Sincerely,
Any Gannett newspaper.

Gotta have priorities.
That's terrible! Everyone knows that unemployment checks are for cigarettes and lottery tickets.
He certainly acts like he has someone's hand up his @ss.
It will crash the entire system and make your kids whine (more).
Hm, sounds like slashdot was bought by Gannett.
(And yes, I know that that joke is three days older than dirt. So am I.)
