... but it only boots Ubuntu. I have a 2008 MacBook that belonged to my fiancee. It was slow to the point of unusable on OS X Leopard, even after upping the ram to 4GB. Finally I gave her my Windows machine which she loves and took her MacBook. I installed a Raring daily on it and it's working like a champ. The hardware is fine, but the Mac OS is crap. It's slow as hell (I've owned a MacBook and an iBook in the past). I guess maybe if I had a Pro it would be faster, but why would they even release low end hardware that doesn't have the horsepower to run their OS? Doesn't make sense to me. So anyway, here I am using a Mac, but it's straight Linux for me (unless Ubuntu decides that they aren't getting the features they want from Linux and switch to a BSD kernel... yeah, I went there).

You just hit the nail on the head of why customers and employees of once great companies now hate those companies. Their management knows little to nothing about the business itself, they only know how to look at a spreadsheet and run a trend chart. At my last job, we spent most of our time making charts go up and boxes turn green. These had little to no positive effect on our business and often just made things worse. If things got too bad, we'd just make up numbers or manipulate them in such a way as to make them what the managers wanted. Since the managers didn't know anything about the real world happenings, they were none the wiser. A terrible way to run a business, but it seems that's how most are run nowadays.

Actually, I started out with Ubuntu and installed the kubuntu-desktop package. So right now I get the best of both worlds. KDE just works better for me, although I know that is pretty subjective. It has better helper applications and little dock applets than Gnome. KDE also seems more stable, with a lot less weirdness. Sometimes Gnome just does random things for no reason (like docking my apps, at random, to the top of the screen instead of the the docking area). KDE also looks more polished. However, Gnome does have several advantages over KDE. Nautilus is a much better file manager than Konquerer. gFTP is the easiest FTP file manager out there. I also prefer the Gnome save dialog although I know many people don't. And of course with Ubuntu, Gnome is the default and has better support.

I installed the Dapper version of Kubuntu on my lappy yesterday. The install was quick and it automagically detected almost all my hardware. The only issue was with the wireless network. It would not work during the install, but it did detect my card and I was able to manually start the network after installation with a few commands. I still prefer KDE to Gnome, but I think I'll give Gnome another try once Dapper comes out. Like an idiot I failed to create a /home partition on my current install, so when Dapper is released, I'll just do a fresh install and try out Gnome. I use Kubuntu as my every day desktop. Windows partition was deleted yesterday. :)

I think the reason the previous poster said that the money was "pissed away" is because of the apparent lack of progress in Iraq. While there have been some advances in electricity and healthcare, these advances are fairly limited and violence is still a daily fact in Iraq. According to estimates 4000 Iraqi civilians died last year due to insurgent attacks alone. Additionally, another 1600 Iraqi police and soldiers are died last year due to the insurgency. The civilian death toll for the first two months of 2006 is 1000 people (source here). So violence seems to be trending upwards.

Iraq is the new breeding ground for terrorists because of the high unemployment, oppression, and poverty. Unemployment is at 60% according to Senator John Murtha this week. He also states that oil production is below prewar levels and only 30% of Iraqis actually have running water. Also, Amnesty International reports that prisoners in Iraq are still being tortured (source here). I still believe that torture is unacceptable and so do many other Americans and people all over the world.

I think the real frustration is that there is no real strategy or plan for the American actions in Iraq (just repeating "stay the course" is NOT a plan). As it stands right now, it seems we will be on the ground in Iraq indefinitely. American troops in Iraq will only help fuel the insurgency as time goes on and the Iraqi people become more resentful of our presence. With British troops set to pull out by 2008, America will be pretty much alone in the country.

They definitely need fewer stores. I know of three Shacks within walking distance of my apartment. That's not to mention all the other stores around town. It seems as if there is a Radio Shack in every little shopping center, sometimes less than a mile from the next store.

They also need to move away from cellphone and digital satellite services. The offer no value add on these services, they are merely a third party vendor. Most people would rather deal direct than with a third party vendor.

Finally, they are trying to put too much into a small footprint store. They should face the fact the most people are going to go to Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Fry's, etc. when they want to buy name brand televisions, stereos, and computers. They should try to stick with smaller items they can sell in the small stores.

And maybe this is just the end for Radio Shack. Most of the time it is easier (and certainly cheaper) to buy electronic components online, and you don't have to deal with a pushy teenager trying to sell you a cellphone plan.
