Look at it this way. OS X has been running in parallel on X86 for years. X86 is a well known platform that 90% of the computing world uses. What kind of "hardware flaws" are you expecting to see?

If Apple had moved to say xyz platform that was not being widely used for computing then IMHO you would have a point. But that isn't the case so I don't think you theory about there being something wrong with this generation of Intel hardware is accuarte. The "next" gen Mactels won't be 2nd gen, they will be 15th gen or whatever of a stable and widely used platform.

I do expect OS bugs to crop up simply due to a wider sample of users, but I also expect next gen Mactel hardware to look just like next gen PC hardware. Afterall Apple now essentially makes "IBM PCs".

I will say that I have seen XP SP2 boxes with AV get trojans. In fact I help someone out who has XP SP2, all updates, and updated AV, MS Antispyware, and spyware blaster running, who STILL manages to get himself into trouble. Still though he is an idiot and you seem to know your way around computers. Legit apps on the net usually don't cause much problems.

One thing that does bother me about all these apps is that an average user still can get themselves into trouble even with all that help. This will probably cause some blood to boil but the default behavior for these apps needs to be to A) delete by default no matter what the file even if it means instantly rebooting into safemode to fix the problem B) if the virus/trojan can't be fixed lock the user out of the system until it is fixed properly or at a minimum C) dump the user into a different virus free profile setup with the new Microsoft "Shared computer" program. Nip it all in the bud and prevent the spreading. Man I hope Vista really does stand up to MS's claims about how secure it will be. *coughs*

98 support is already gone from many apps. The 9X OS series are dead. Time to move on.

2k support is disappearing but will continue for a few more years on apps that large corps use. It's a 7 year old OS already.

And finally XP support will continue for years to come. Just like how 2K killed off 95 support, Vista will be the ultimate end for 98. If your father in law uses 98 tell him to upgrade already. If he wants to keep using an abandoned OS despite his own best interest then he can do that as well. In that case spend $120 on XP Home and 512MB of memory and he'll be all set.

I don't believe that for a second. People who wanted to take advantage of this flaw had their code done with 48hrs of the public disclosure. No serious hackers we waiting till this weekend to try and catch some people. It's a race you see. The last thing they wanted was to wait a week and let Antivirus makers and consumers get wise to this and start taking precautions.

IMHO MS releasing this early is due to bad PR and massive pressure from customers. I think it had nothing to do with "tricking" crackers.

And I also want to say thanks to a "real" hacker. Running around like crazy to install that 3rd party patch probably saved me from mucho headaches. Jeers to MS to taking so freaking long.

I'm sorry but in anything above a $50 camera I should not be seeing artifacts. Its the only brand I know of that has this problem and its embarassing. Its a dam shame because otherwise Kodak's have pleasantly punchy colors and good sharpness. In good conditions they can take some nice shots. But compression problems, a general inability to focus in less than perfect conditions and a weak White balance system continue to plague what could otherwise be very solid cameras.
