That's the same thought I had. At first glance its just a bunch of ads. Who want's to use a search engine where the Entire first page has been manipulated? I could see most people not even bothering to hit the tiny "next" arrows or even understanding that there the first page is a giant fake just pretending to do what a Real search engine does. What a crappy search engine.
The parent article was right, Microsoft just wants to trick people into visiting their fake search results page. The less people know outside of products which make MS money the better off MS is. This of course includes all of those paid for fake search listings.
"Really, this work seems to bring the Debian installer up to around Red Hat 7 functionality"
Err, try Red Hat 5.0 if that. I still can't believe that the main installer actually makes people have to choose which kernel modules they need. That's like selling a car to someone and then making them figure out how to wire the spark plugs before they can go anywhere. Although Debian has always been less popular than Red Hat, Mandrake, Suse, etc I'm still amazed that they have been able to keep any users over the years considering what a horrible install they've had to get through just to get the system up and running perfectly.
Don't know if its true, but I was just reading someone who said bulb life for this unit had been increased to 4000 vs 3000 hours, and that bulbs were down to $99 vs $199. Seems like its worth it to me.
Although I don't have a grand to blow right now, saving up a year for it is certainly possible. I'd love to redo my basement and dedicate part of it to a HT. Let's hope these typs of projectors continue to come on the market for afforable prices.
Yet Another Post From Someone Who Actually Knows Nothing About X
"GNU/Linux with X is slower than Windows, and way slower than OS X."
See here is where you so wrong its not even funny. X in itself is not slower than any of the above. In fact X running something live XFCE, WindowMaker etc etc is MUCH faster then Windows or Aqua will ever be. The fact that you even tried to throw out a blanket statement about "X" being slower again shows how little you understand it.
So what exactly are you basing your opinion on? On modern hardware, ie 1GHz 256MB running say KDE is about the same as running XP. Even if XP was say slightly faster, that doesn't mean X itself is "slower" than Windows. It just proves that a particular Window Manager and Desktop environment is can be more resource intensive. Try running XP on P200 with 32MB ram versus X running a lightweight WM. I'd love to hear you call X bloated then.
"So it seems to me that X is either too complicated, or not sufficiently optimized. I think that we need a complete X replacement"
Again sufficiently optimized has nothing to do wtih it. The process by which X gains new features and drivers needs to be streamlined, but these calls for "ditch X because its holding us back" are completely ignorant and show a total lack of understanding on the subject.
btw most people would consider OS X up till panther to be about as slow as it gets. Those that have ditched it in favor for OS's like Yellow Dog almost always reported on how much more responsive the Linux environment was.
Somehow I really doubt that. Sure maybe a few people you know have switched to Debian but your assertion that the "community" has shifted to Debian is laughable. I've been seeing plenty of FUD from Debian users these days since Fedora came out. Lots of talk about how every should jump ship and support Debian. Lots of fake posts about people saying "screw Red Hat I'm moving to Debian!". All very touching, and all overblown.
"I think the reality of the situation is that the strength of the community isn't in RedHat any longer"
So your saying suddenly in the last month the distro with the largest number of users have all switched elsewhere? Doubtful. Red Hat and now Fedora will continue to be the de-facto leader in Linux for quite some time. Sorry to disappoint you.
Just a quick note as someone who has used all of the above products. I like and own photshop elements, but it is lacking in some features compared to Gimp. Most noteable are basics like Curves. When comparing the latest Gimp to Photoshop Elements, people are better off not having to spend a hundred bucks when a free program will do the same job. Let's not forget that one of the major advantages of Photoshop isn't availble in Elements, namely CMYK support. Plus like I mentioned, Gimp has some advanced features Elements lacks.
I think Elements is a really good program, but after you consider Gimp is its equal technically and to boot is free I think the choice is clear. At least for people who are stuck in Windows because of a single app:P
"I use FreeBSD. But now, given the absolute shithead decision of RedHat to do the SCO/Caldera 'enterprise' thing -- read leech off Free Software developers -- I am going back to Debian for Linux solutions"
Pretty sad that you actually believe that FUD. Leech off FREE software? That's about the dumbiest thing I've read on/. in a long time.
Since unfortunately they are adding in fake robots(kind retarded if you ask me) why not include Twiggy from Buck Rogers?
Beedie Beeedie Beedie. Or something like that.
btw I've seen a lot of references to him online as "tweeky", I'm pretty sure it was twiggy. Also feel free to nominate his evil master, that round see through head that hung on his neck. This of course being waaaay before rappers were hanging stupid clocks on their necks. Wouldn't clear plastic robot heads been much more dope?
Doesn't both AOL and Earthlink provide popup blocking directly with their software? Not to mention the hundreds of free and commercial programs that millions of people use daily to block popups. Based on that I'd say a large part of the Internet already has popupblocking in place.
Frankly I just don't see it changing the Internet that much. It also remains to be seen how well MS's software works.

Isn't it surprising how many people are ignorant of what Mozilla can do? I mean I simply can't count how oftern I hear, "if only Mozilla/if only X browser" could do this, Yada Yada. When in fact if you can think of it you CAN do it in Mozilla. It's really a shame most people don't know that. All it takes is a little research.
They get tipped so much because of the power they have over people. People are afraid that if they don't tip then their bags will end up God knows where. So no they are Not worth the service they provide. People tip out of fear. In the end just like the article states they are way overpaid.
This is way it has always been with Publishing when it comes to opensource. I've yet to read ANY book on a specific opensource project that wasn't out of date by the time it was published. This book was obviously in the making and probably done well before Red Hat made its intentions clear. IF they knew what they know now 5 months ago maybe they could have done something but as it stands I'm sure it was just too late to change anything.
The same problem awaits anyone writing a book about Fedora. How to you plan to write a book on an OS that changes every 6 months? The saving grace is that Red Hat's Enterprise linue is a lot more stable and thus their will be applicable books coming over for years to come.
Err, just like Windows Linux CAN do all of that stuff. Also note that by default Windows can't do a lot of the stuff on that list. Neither Linux nor Windows come with the software necessary to play every single type of audio/video file out of the box. Why your making a list with those items as something Linux "can't do" is something I find really odd. Once they are installed in Linux you can just double click till your heart's content.
Also since your putting stuff like "The user can hook up a TV Tuner card and be able to play video from a cable box / antenna or a VCR.", "- The user can drop a CD into the CDROM drive and play it or rip it" I have to assume you just don't know much about or haven't used Linux in many years. These are basic functions that the distro makers solved long ago.
With regards to installing PCI cards, most of them "just work" right out of the box at this point. Of the ones that don't or are hard to install you can feel free to thank OEM hardware makers. They are reason a particular piece of hardware can be difficult to install. Don't go blaming distro makers because they are being shut out.
Is Linux pefect? No. But your list of requirements is way off.
The quake3 page shows something interesting, but look at the scores on the ET page. It comes in dead last by a long shot. Looks roughly to be in GF3 range. That's kinda typical for most minority GPU vendors I've seen over the years. They can usually come close to matching entry level cards and a benchmark or two but fall down miserably on the vast majority of benchmarks. Think Kyro etc.
Also these "3rd party" GPU vendors tend to not have the resources to implement truly state of the art functions. So while their may be some PR on advanced Pixel Shader support I'd be surprised if they can ever pull it off. I know I mentioned Kyro already, but I can just see the same thing happening. Poor performance was blamed on drivers, but then in the end we learned that the card just wasn't that good and no amount of driver tweaking could make up for its architectural flaws.
I do welcome another player, but I'm sure not holding my breath that they will be able to compete on a technical level with the big boys. In most cases consumers will still be better off buying the previous generation of GPU's from established vendors who have all their kinks worked out and have proven that they will be around long term.
Red Hat would survive because to many Red Hat IS Linux. There are many many companies out there that use and buy Red Hat specifically because they are independant from IBM et al. I've also seen no hints that IBM wants to be a Linux vendor. They are much happier to pimp other OS's and make their money being a service provider. IBM has no desire to repeat the DOS->WARP->FAILURE cycle.
IBM makes money the smart way. They service whatever OS's are on the market. That way if any particular OS become irrelavant they have nothing to fear and can just pick up where they left off.
Make no mistake. IBM is a big booster of Linux not because they are big believer in Free Software. They support Linux because that's what people want. If it wasn't Linux it just be some other OS.
People who mistakenly believe IBM is some great backer of Linux who are planning to see it through no matter what are Fools.

That's what I was going to say. 700MB is standard media 650MB is not. 650MB might have been standard 5 years ago but that's no longer the case in any store I've been in the last several years.
ALso why would you buy the slowest media you can find? A) that probably means its older and been on the shelf longer, and B) that means it doesn't benefit from whatever the manus have learned in their years of making discs. I'm not saying you should always buy 52X, but conversly no need to go searching for 24X since it's certainly not automatically better.
Finally on most modern 40X-48X media, burning at 24X or 32X is fine for data/music cd's. Burning at 4X is just plain stupid for what most people do and serves no purpose except to enforce old wives tales.
